Max Lucado has always been an encouraging and enjoyable author, but I think his books have been getting even better. In my opinion Max has a clear understanding of God's ways from a New Covenant perspective. He persuasively paints a picture of a loving, but holy and just God, and how God reaches out to man. Max does not diminish how difficult this world can be and how devastating sin's effect on us can be.I find that most Christian books are a mixture of old and new covenant teachings. Their underlying message is "try harder". They supposedly encourage the believer to work harder so God can bless you. If you don't you will remain in the same state forever. Max clearly and articulately shows that this is not how God works after Jesus. Your obedience is the Obedience Of Faith. As you put your faith in the promises of God you will see God's character and find his power to change you both from within and also your external circumstances. Max understands that there is no condemnation for the believer.I was blessed by this book. It is scriptural and shows God's heart toward you. I strongly encourage you to read it.

Lucado sure did his research in this book. Not only that, but, it has his usual easy to read writing style. I always look forward to the next Lucado book, and this is no different. I am looking forward to the next one. Lucado encapsulates each chapter in promises, God's promises to us that give us hope. He ends by suggesting that we come up with our own list of promises, which is a very good suggestion. One place I differ from Lucado is in his chapter entitled "This Temporary Tomb," which is about eternity. He describes how we will be perfected. He says we will have "a mind with no wandering thoughts." I believe it is good to have a mind with wandering thoughts. If I didn't have wandering thoughts, I wouldn't be able to write fiction, in fact I probably wouldn't be able to write non-fiction, either, as I write when the ideas come to me, so I must write as I go, taking notes. I am surprised Lucado wrote that part. Perhaps he doesn't have the same writing process I do. Anyhow, as usual, Lucado has written a better book this time than the last one, and the last one was good, too, which is why I always look forward to the next book by him.

Max Lucado has hit a home run with his 40th book. Bringing encouragement and hope in these uncertain times is like receiving a huge breath of fresh air. Max Lucado reminds us that when all else fails, there is always hope. Hope is a four-letter word for expectation. It expresses a deep yearning in one’s heart. Faith is the glue that holds our hopes in our heart. We all hope for one thing or another during our lifetime. We hope you have a good day; We hope you succeed; We hope your dreams come true, etc. But, what exactly is the reality of hope? In one sense hope can be defined as wishing for something and expecting it to materialize. Perhaps the best way to find an answer is to dissect the word itself. So, take a look at the word hope as it relates to our lives:H:To have hope we must have a compassionate heart for those around us;O:To have hope we must be optimistic and believe in our vision;P: To have hope we must persevere and keep moving forward in faith;E: To have hope we must encourage one another in truth.Thank you Max Lucado for writing so generously and giving us this roadmap on how to build our lives on the promises of God....AMEN!

Max Lucado has a great ways explains his thoughts. They speak to me encouraging me to keep going. I know our Savior and Lord is with me. It’s help when your going through a hard time to hear the words of Christ explained the way Max Lucado does. Thank you for this great book!!!

I started reading this when I was called home to my mothers place to find Dad in horrible health. I handed over my copy of unshakable hope to her (signed copy) and I ordered another copy. There is no way that either of us are going into battle mode in life without Hope. This little book is filled with stories and promises from God that make our feet solid on God's Foundation with Peace and Hope.

This book was so uplifting and provided an insight on the biblical promises of God. it was easy to read and very engaging. This was the first Max Lucado book I have read. I will be reading more of his books in the near future. This is a great book if you need hope, and encouragement. I feel equipped to overcome any difficult circumstance.

Great book for soothing the soul in the middle of the night.

Thank you again, Max. Your writing stirs the soul to serious reflection and intentional living. It's also a delight to learn in a grace filled manner. Amazing support materials.

My coworkers tended to describe this book as the New Testament. Working as a Rails Developer, I had heard Sandi Metz mentioned in passing at least a dozen times before I started reading this book. This book was offered to me with a very high set of expectations, and I do not feel that those expectations were entirely merited. My reading experience suffered from three key aspects:(1) Like any author, Metz had to choose some kind of raw material for her examples. She chose... biking (ahem, cycling). This carries a lot of baggage on the West Coast—something akin to choosing horseback riding or fine wines. The decision to use cycling as the cultural center of the book left a really bitter taste in my mouth. The examples felt unapproachable and niche. It's easy to think about the Inheritance pattern that attends the animal, the dog and the golden retriever. It is more than a little self absorbed to think that most of your readers are going to get out of bed for discussions about tape color, recumbent mountain bikes and chain sizes.(2) Metz uses sentence structure that feels overly complicated. The comparison that comes to mind is Aristotle. There were a large number of sentences that I needed to reread. I can only imagine what a slog this book would be for an ESL reader.(3) The spacing and visual style of the code examples were unattractive and unapproachable. This book is six years old but looks like it was written in 1992.The wisdom in this book is absolutely worthy of a 5-star review and I am a stronger engineer for having read it. For engineers working with Ruby, I am not sure that there is a better resource for learning OOP design patterns. That said, this is not the Bible of OOP for developers in all languages. If you are a Swift or Kotlin or C++ developer, look elsewhere.

While the industry moves more towards Functional Programming Paradigms and away from Object-Oriented Thinking, Sandi Metz's book, Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby, published in 2012, still stands the test of time with OOP best-practices. It is truly a practitioner's guide to Navigating Changing Requirements and being truly Agile. The book addresses OOP Anti-patterns and the Reader is taken through iterative steps in evolving the Example Applications throughout the chapters. In some ways, it can be likened to thinking in more of a 'Data-Modeling' Manner, though adapted for OOP instead of Relational Databases. If you work in Software, you should read or re-read this book. The author also has a more recent book available through her web site, which is of similar quality though has more of a Programming or Puzzle-like Feel.

I have programmed in Ruby for a number of years now and still found this book of value. I would not recommend it for absolute beginners because it assumes knowledge of the language, though you will learn general principles. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to get a better grasp of writing good object oriented code, especially in Ruby. I found it helpful to think of Messages sent instead of just the class hierarchy.

I hate bronchitis! Reading "Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby" was a blast. Reading it while ill was frustrating! Lots of thought provoking ideas written in an easy to read style. I kept falling asleep due to sickness and my brain kept yelling "This is cool! Stay awake!" Still, Sandi achieved her goal even through my fog of exhaustion; I now see objects very differently and will happily refactor my code to make it better. The only real ding to the book is Chapter 8's references to Enumerable and Forwardable. Everything else in the book was either easy to read or well explained. These two characters seem to have slipped in without fanfare or explanation. I don't understand them and thus probably missed some of the book's goodness. Perhaps I'll get it later. I still rate this book a 5 star buy!

This is my favorite tech read so far this year. It takes a straight-forward approach to writing code that you won't hate yourself for a day or month or year later. The term "design" in the title is not referring to making wild speculative guesses about the future and planning for any number of contingencies, it is about arranging the code so that it is understandable, and to minimize cost and pain. There is a focus on designing the communication between objects as much as focusing on the structure of the objects themselves, which I found to be extremely interesting. This discussion helped clarify a lot of thoughts and ideas about abstractions and where responsibilities belong, as well as the directions of dependencies -- things that had been rattling around in my brain for a while but that I had trouble applying in the real world. Reading this let me put all these pieces together (and then some) into a coherent whole. Or at least a coherent seed of a whole. The code examples are simple, but the author manages to wrangle some serious dramatic tension out of every line of code, and they illustrate the concepts covered well enough that I was able to make the leap to applying the concepts in much more complex code bases. The chapter on testing was sublime. It took an immensely practical approach to which methods to test and which tests to write in order to avoid duplication and brittleness in both tests and designs.I also appreciated that none of the discussions were about any sort of moral superiority. The discussions were about getting things done. The argument for arranging code nicely wasn't about aesthetics or professional duty, but rather about lowering cost and allowing you to make changes without causing expensive outages and making people frustrated.Soap boxes? Sure. High horses? Nowhere in sight.Note: I read a pre-release version of the book. I did not know the author at the time, but sent her quite a lot of feedback, which led to several conversations to clarify. When I waxed enthusiastic about the contents, she asked if she could forward this to the publisher, and a quote ended up in the paper copy.

This is one of the best mountaineering expedition books I have read. Ridgeway takes the reader through the intense daily struggles (both mental & physical) required to climb K2, perhaps the hardest of the 8000 meter peaks to climb. In 1978 a large team of Americans, including some of the best US high altitude climbers at that time, have the all consuming goal to be the first from the USA to reach the summit of K2 (which had been climbed only twice before). Their incredible ordeal begins with an arduous approach hike, and continues with increasingly difficult challenges against the weather, altitude, and other deadly hazards. Unfortunately, the team members frequently argued, and struggled to work together effectively. Ridgeway is very candid about this, and does not spare himself criticism. Against all odds, 4 climbers made superhuman efforts to achieve the summit (mostly without supplemental oxygen) by a new route, and somehow survived the descent. Ridgeway's masterful writing made me feel like I was there, and I gained tremendous appreciation for the commitment and skills of the climbers. My only complaint was the lack of diagrams showing the route and camps, but the photos are striking.

Great Book, all of the personal intrigue makes it an engaging read. Had just read Living on the Edge: The Winter Ascent of Kanchenjunga byCherie Bremer-Kamp who was on the trip, and she recommended it. And also having read Roskelly's book about Nanda Devi I felt like I knew many of the characters. And they don't get along. A beautiful route to K2's peak that I had never learned about before. The cover says it all, some of the climbers had to traverse that knife edge ridge 11 times! A big adventure, and I don't think anyone dies, spoiler alert

"The Last Step: The American Ascent of K2" is Rick Ridgeway's extremely well written account of the first successful American ascent (and only third overall ascent at the time) of the world's second highest peak. "The Last Step" is the "expedition account" and includes fascinating commentary from several climbers, making for a more rounded view than most climbing books. "The Last Step" is blessed with a stunning collection of photographs which provide a sense of scale both of the beauty of the Karakoram Mountains and of the incredibly difficult terrain the expedition overcame.Ridgeway's account candidly describes the tensions and acrimony that built up in the expedition as it was repeatedly stalled by poor weather in the fall of 1978. The expedition spent 67 days on the mountain, much of it exposed to the debilitating effects of high altitude. The normally driven and competitive natures of good climbers became points of friction as the expedition faced oncoming winter and the likelihood that few if any of the climbers were going to get a shot at the summit.Ridgeway's narrative of the two successful summit attempts is absolutely hair-raising, as men too long in the "dead zone" above 26,000 feet climbed like near-zombies over dangerously exposed snow slopes. One climber, Jim Wickwire, was forced to bivouac overnight in sub-zero temperatures at 28,000 feet after zoning out and lingering too long at the summit. The account makes clear that only the most fit, capable, and single-minded climbers had any chance of topping out on K2 under the conditions faced in 1978. Those climbers with lesser skills or with distractions such as homesickness or as in one case, an affair with another member of the team, were unable or unwilling to risk all for the summit. This book is most highly recommended to fans of the climbing account genre. Although a long read at over 300 pages, others may find it of interest as an indepth look at what happens on world-class climbing expeditions.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most riveting mountaineering books around. Not for the climbing, which is in and of itself gripping, but for the slice of human drama found in the deterioration of relationships amongst various members of the expedition. At times, one is mesmerized by the bad behavior displayed at such high altitudes! One would think that these expeditioners were on Melrose Place, rather than fighting for their place in mountaineering history on K2, one of the most perilous mountains in the world to ascend.Central to all the squabbling, was the love trangle which developed on the expedition, which was perceived by some of the expeditioners to be an extra marital affair in progress. Though this later proved to be true, at the time it was the source of much denial and hard feelings. It further split the team, which was already divided over who would be chosen to summit, and eroded already existing friendships, while preventing new ones which might have otherwise developed. On top of all this, add in poor weather which caused them to spend about sixty seven days on the mountain, mostly at altitudes over eighteen thousand feet, and you have a recipe for disaster. These expeditioners, however, managed to become the first Americans to ascend K2.Their success in achieving their objective, despite the trials and tribulations which they endured, is testament to their fortitude in putting aside petty, mean spirited concerns and inter-personal conflicts. This painstaking account of the first time summit of K2 by Americans is a must read for all climbing enthusiasts and readers of this genre.

You have to hand it to Lee Child. He obviously listens to his fans. Perhaps like me you are somewhat disappointed that Tom Cruise is the movie version of Jack Reacher. When you have the money to buy the movie rights to a character who someone else has created, I guess you have poetic license to recreate him in your own image. Unfortunately in this case it involves shrinking a 6'5" 250 pound man into a package that is only 5'7" and 170 pounds. Even though the movie rights belong to Tom Cruise, Lee Child has no reason to reduce the size and presence of his star character. In the first 28 pages of this novel, Mr. Child has clearly wanted all of his readers to know that Jack Reacher could be described as 'Bigfoot' or 'The Incredible Hulk'. In fact early on one of the characters in this excellent story calls him "huge", "not quite seven feet, but close." And he has "Fists like Thanksgiving turkeys." Mr. Cruise paid a lot of money to buy this character, but he doesn't "own it".I have read all 22 of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels and this one might arguably be his best. The longest journey begins with but a single step and Mr. Child takes his readers on what appears to be a simple quest to make things right. Nothing official, nothing legal/illegal, just simply Jack Reacher trying to do the right thing -- possibly to atone for some of his past actions. But of course his journey becomes more complicated the longer he pursues his goal. We are exposed to our current opioid epidemic and how the legal system of manufacture and distribution of pharmaceutical grade opioids has been corrupted and circumvented. And we are shown the horrible plight of our disfigured and disabled veterans. Interestingly enough these two timely problems are tied together and become a major part of the plot.Lee Child is definitely at the top of his craft. This novel is a perfect example of how someone's imagination has allowed them to create an interesting, insightful, and enjoyable read while informing us about two major problems affecting today's society. The fact that it is extremely well written doesn't take away from the snarky and cynical humor peppered throughout this book. The characters are all well described and their motives are crystal clear, even if they contradict one another's. When you finish reading it, and I'll bet that you won't want it to end, the artistry with which Mr. Child tied all of his subplots together will be wonderfully apparent. And at the end, while pondering what you have just read, you will consider once again who the real monster in the room is.

The Midnight Line is not a typical Jack Reacher story. Instead, Reacher, a former Army MP major, puts on his Military Police cap and does some serious sleuthing from the opening scene where he finds a West Point class ring in a pawn shot in Rapid City South Dakota to his search to find the rightful owner of the ring in Wyoming. Reacher is a West Point grad himself and knows that few graduates of the Point would give up their ring unless something bad had happened to them. He decides that maybe he can help the owner of the ring and immediately starts gathering clues to identify this fellow West Pointer. Of course, as the story develops, a simple lost and found case becomes dangerous as Reacher creates enemies in the oxycodone and fentanyl drug trafficking business. Reacher must use all his skills to protect life and limb.It doesn’t take Reacher long to get to Wyoming, where he thinks he may find the owner of the West Point ring. I was much impressed by Lee Child’s ability to paint impressive word pictures of the places Reacher visits in Wyoming. I never thought of Lee Child as a fine writer – I do now. Wyoming came to life for me in the pages of this novel thanks to Lee Child's writing skills. Additionally, Reacher teams up with a former FBI agent who is also searching for a missing person and the dialogue between Reacher, the agent, and other characters in the story is crisp, clear, believable, and often entertaining. The Midnight Line is a police procedural, something like a Harry Bosch novel by Michael Connelly. I am guessing some readers are going to be unhappy that there is less violent action in The Midnight Line than in a typical Reacher story. For me, I liked this change of pace and direction and was impressed with the new more cerebral Reacher, a man well educated and thoughtful. Don’t get me wrong, when mayhem is needed, Reacher is up to the task! When we finally get to the end of the story, Lee Child ties up all the details nicely and leaves us with a feeling of satisfaction that all loose ends are resolved as Reacher heads off for some new adventure.I may be in the minority, but I like this new Reacher and I think that Lee Child has used all his talents as a writer and story teller to best advantage. Unfortunately, Reacher fans are going to have to wait; the novel will not be released until November 7, 2017. The Midnight Line looks like a best seller to me and I recommend it without reservation to Reacher fans. 4.5 stars.Update: The more I think about it, the better I like this new Reacher novel. My wife is reading it now and she thinks it is excellent; she is a serious mystery story buff. Five stars.Update 2: I wrote this review two months ago and predicted this new Reacher novel would go right to the top of the best seller list, which is where it stands on this first day of publication. If you read this book, leave me a comment and tell me if you agree that this is one of the best books in the Reacher series. Thanks. Russell

Disclaimer: This is just my own personal opinion. As a Reacher fan, of course I had to buy this book. Unfortunately this time around the characters were less interesting to me; I preferred "Never Go Back" where Jack went to seek out Turner and the characters had more meaning, simply because Reacher's been calling Turner's phone starting two books before that. I guess I'm guilty of wanting to see more Reacher-beat-people-up, and in this book, there was not enough of that. There also wasn't enough of him outsmarting/witting people. All in all, I felt all the conflicts were resolved much too easily with little pushback. That won't stop me from buying the next Reacher book, but I definitely won't be reading this one again.
