This is a short—but incredibly sweet—book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It was published in 2017 and contains myriad great wisdom for troubled times. The Dalai Lama once told the co-author of "An Appeal to the World", Franz Alt, "I don't have any enemies, only people I haven't met yet." He has spent his life cultivating this positive attitude, and it can be found on every page of this book.Today's world is marked by division. Politicians are promoting borders rather than inclusion, economic inequality is running rampant, and religion is breeding violence. Yet the need for unity has never been more urgent, because the crises that humanity faces are affecting people all around the world. Many people have lost all hope for the future and wonder what we can possibly do to move forward.Well, they're in luck, because the Dalai Lama and Alt have created a brilliant book that is capable of watering the seeds of world peace that are already located inside of each and every one of us—even though many people do not know or believe that they exist. He reminds us that all people have two things in common—our universal pursuit of happiness and the compelling desire to avoid suffering. Finding common ground and engaging in an open dialog is an effective way to mitigate the division that we otherwise experience.One theme that the Dalai Lama repeats several times throughout the book is the concept that ethics are more important than religion. He even goes on to say, "On some days I think it would be better if there were no religions. All religions and all scriptures harbor potential for violence. A lot of people are experiencing suffering because he is currently our President, and hopefully the Dalai Lama's words on this topic will help soothe their psychic wounds."An Appeal to the World" is already a major international bestseller, and for good reason. It's an inspirational, powerful book written by one of the most revered spiritual leaders of our time that has the potentially to truly change the world. It would probably take the average person between one to three hours to read it from cover to cover, and I highly recommend that you do.
The title is a bit misleading, since this book has NOT been written by Dalai Lama: it has been written by Franz Alt, question and answer format. Even if the "message" remains about compassion, inclusion, better search of the heart, the content of answers are kind of general summary of our Dalai's take on "this time of great division".Small book, a question on one page(lot of empty space I say)and the answer on next page.Certainly not the best book explaining the ethics promoted by this great Lama of our time.
In an easy read, using canny humor and wisdom, the Dalai Lama shares his vision on how all of us can do our bit to preserve the planet we call home as well as ensure our own happiness and inner peace. Tackling tough subjects from Trump and the Chinese occupation of Tibet to the global refugee crisis and the proliferation of arms sales, he puts each in context of how all these challenges have a direct impact on our own personal happiness and wellbeing. If we continue to pretend that they're not our problems, we harm ourselves in the end because the reality is that we are all connected and dependent on one another for our survival and peace of mind.
I always enjoy reading what his Holiness has to say on any topic. This is a very interesting investigation into how we can all try to be better humans without having to join any of the popular cults/religions. His emphasis on personal responsibility is one that should resonate with everyone. I do wish there could be a cessation of the friction between China and Tibet so that we could hear more from the Dalai Lama without his having to worry about how the leadership in China would use his words against him.
Truly inspiring, the Dali Lama calls upon all of us to cease our bitter quarrels with our fellow travelers and attend to that which binds us together, our home, the earth, is under assault and this will lead all of us to destruction. We must shift our focus from self-serving, nationalistic goals to our joint humanity, identify an ethics that inspires unity, not division and work together to solve the problems facing us today.
He surely is an inspiration. Great quick read! A lot of what he said forced me to rethink how I’m living my own life; things I hold onto that’s dragging me down. I wish I could have him follow me when I go to work... I would love to bounce thoughts and ideas off of him since I often times ponder about philosophical ideologies.
I enjoyed reading his views. I have always felt that the world would be a much better place if we all listened to him. This was a good book about his views and what he thinks can be done to have a peaceful world. He is always all inclusive of people. We should all be more like that. It is a short book that all should read and think about.
Every one of us needs to work harder to bring peace to our world. By paying attention to the wisdom of the Dalai Lama and others, we can do a better job.
