Where's the Scripture?Elizabeth George is a terrific author and my wife loves "A Woman After God's Own Heart". This was a gift to a young lady in our church that I bought because of George's reputation and the title. It has good advice—even sound, Christian advice. There is a decided lack of Bible throughout this book, though. I can't recommend it as a good devotional for that reason.
I found Elizabeth George books quite by accident at the public library while looking for large print books. I will admit the first book started slowly for me. I was impatient; too many descriptions, too many British words and phrases, too much character development. In truth, I might categorize myself as a lazy reader. I wanted a quick mystery to finish in a night or two and then to move on. I almost put it down because of my impatience, but something made me stick with it. And I am so thrilled that I did. That first book was read out of order, but after completing it and finding myself hungering for more, I began the series with Book 1 and have never looked back. I love these books. I am an avid mystery reader, but these books are so much more than your average mystery. I have come to be fascinated by all the regulars and their lives and find the mystery aspect of the books wonderful, but not the reason I keep reading. In very short order I will have completed the entire series and am hoping that Ms. George is hard at work on the next book. If she isn't, I'm not sure what I'll do. Give her books a chance if you are skeptical. I am sure most readers will love them as much as I do.
I've been working my way through Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley series. This is my absolute favorite (so far). This novel has several different storylines going on all at once, and they were all captivating and kept me riveted. Prostitution and drug abuse, animal rights activism, broken marriages, a terminal, progressive illness, are some examples. As always there are the familiar and beloved Tommy Lynley, Sergeant Havers, Lady Helen, etc. This book was excellent and I was sad when it ended.
Elizabeth George is an author who challenges one to read and not be moved. She throws down the gauntlet: what is right? What is moral? What would you do? Perhaps some readers are not touched by the moral, legal, social and ethical challenges raised in each of her stories. I myself am shaken out of complacency.
This book transformed my prayer life. I thought I knew how to pray until I read this. It takes you to a place of understanding and depth in your prayer life. I'm even reading it to my young teen boys...It's that good!
Like meditation and crossword puzzles, Elizabeth George is good for the mind. This one is different (as they all are) and stands out for having a first person narrative as part of the plot. The way this mystery plays out and how everything ties together is particularly satisfying. I always have my pencil nearby when I'm reading George because there's a phrase or a word I need to remember, or a character I can't keep straight, or an angle I want to look up. I discovered the Inspector Lynley series during this past long cold winter here in the Pennsylvania snow belt. What a literary delight! Funny and dark at the same time, mind boggling, complex and interconnected.. find a soft chair, grab your favorite beverage and dig into this one.
This book, as other reviewers have said, has many characters with a couple subplots unfolding as we read. I was surprised and put off by a kind of dark, kinky undertone from a couple of characters. It seemed a bit forced, like George was trying to be less Agatha Christie like, so she inserted some stuff that would make Miss Marple faint.Still, a good mystery, and the friendship between Havers and Lynley continues to grow. We see the conflict between Lynley wanting to marry Lady Helen, but finding his courtship always interrupted by the demands of his career.
I have to admit that shipping was a bit slow...I didn't realize that it was going to take nearly a month to get to me. Other than that, this book made my mom very happy. She really wanted this book and had told me that so I decided to get it for her. She was excited to have the book and I'm glad that I got it for her. She likes it and I catch her reading it and highlighting her favorite parts of it all the time...and I've only given it to her a few days ago. My mom recommends this book to those who likes these types of books.
