The book is great for a diy person to upgrade your cars performance. it is explains every part for modding your engine. however it does not explain the electric turbos, supercharges and tuners.

i thought it was just going to be things that i already knew and just add it to the library, but it does have alot in it. gets into ecu's and tells you how to change stuff to make more power. explains things in detail and doesn't leave out anything that i caught anyway. good book, with illistrations to describe it better. i would recommend this book to anyone that would like to learn more, sharpen skills or even for the beginner.

Love it.

Nice book for some car mods. Somewhat basic stuff but still cool. worth the price.

great product

This is a great primer on aftermarket car mods. The author presents a clear and fun summary of informaiton that would be useful to any car enthusiast.

I am not a car person in any stretch. but this book made sense and I can really understand what is happening in my car. I now have a list of things I want to do to my car.

If you are thinking about modifying your car and have the "need for speed", read this book first. It'll give you fair warning about what happens legally and financially if you don't plan your modification properly. Bascially before you install that race-ready ECU, turbo or exhaust think of the repercussions it'll cause legally with the environment and the police. The information is very basic but useful to know and far ranging.

If you are interested in Victorian style, especially that of the United States, this book is a good start. The book is not very large, it is rather thin, but easy to carry around if considering ideas for your own home or apartment. The author gives you precise and interesting backgrounds on many rooms of the Victorian style and how they were used. You will also enjoy some of the exterior home photos of classic Victorian houses from California and other states. This book is also very well priced for all the valuable information you get.

This book has provided wonderful ideas for my old house!

good

Excellent book, very good price, quick shipping! AAA

very happy

This book came in great shape and it is a great book and has awesome illustrations. I would purchase again from this seller.

I purchased this book to give me ideas on which type of pattern/material I should use to reupholster a Victorian settee frame I recently bought. After looking through the breathtaking photos on these glossy pages, I know exactly which material to go with. And of course, from viewing this book I have a desire to purchase other victorian pieces to accompany the settee. It's a step back in time that must be seen. This is a wonderful book. Also, this book was like brand new although it is used. Just wish there were more pages.

This is a great book with wonderful pictures and documentation of the victorian era. It has helped me learn more about my 107 year old Victorian Queen Anne home. A great asset in getting ideas for decorating.

I knew by the ending of the first book in this series (Over The Falls) that this book was going to be thrilling and filled with romance but I would have never imagined how thrilling it would be in the end!At first, I was a little confused on how this story started since we were left with that cliffhanger in Over The Falls but once I realized what the Author was doing, it all made total sense in the way that you get the full Savannah story! With Savannah coming off the breakup of her and Aidan, then having her best friend go into a coma without an answer to who did it, nothing about Savannah is what it seems. Then, we are introduced to the handsome but elusive Griffin and his story that will make you shed a tear for what he is having to endure without anyone knowing the truth. As you get deeper in the story with Savannah and Griffin falling in love, you know that something bad will happen but you would never imagine how far would Savannah and Griffin go in order to protect each other. I don't want to spoil too much from this point on but the ending to this book sets the scene for what is coming in the third book that will have everyone on the edge of their seats for what is about to happen and what truths are about to be finally revealed! If anything, I think this series is my all time favorite now of Jordan Ford's for all the action and romance that it brings. Having each book end with a cliffhanger is total icing on the cake for me because it just makes you excited for what may happen in the next book!Thank You to Jordan Ford for this thrilling installment to this series that made it totally worth it, losing sleep over!!I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the Author!

Ok, wow, where to start. This was such a great read, the story felt so wholesome, so good. I absolutely loved Griffin, he is sweet, respectful, protective. What more could you ask in a boyfriend. He was such a good choice for Sav, she deserves happiness and they make a perfect couple.I am so grateful I've got to read this so soon because I read the first book when it came out and I really needed this. I had it on pre-order already but it made my day that I could put my hands on it before the publishing date.I will say that this is perfect young adult read, very clean and well written. Aside from some small drama nothing major happens, we just see our beloved characters grow into themselves and preparing for adulthood. I recommend this to teens wholeheartedly. And what I loved the most were the relationships between the characters. There will be the most unlikely friendships formed and you will be so happy for them, you just can't help it.Now I really want to read Sky's story, I bet it will be soooo good.

I was privileged enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this book from the author for a voluntary and honest review.Wow, what a fabulous, powerful, well written story this is, its full of action and caught my interest from the beginning, the storyline kept me intrigued and I wanted to know what would happen next. This storyline is captivating, flows really well, hooks you in and grabs a hold of your heart. It took me through several emotions, I even shed a tear or two. Can't wait for Skylar's book.

Wow this book was just as good as the first one in this series. I simply devoured it, couldn't put it down from the first word to the last. This story picks up with Skyler in hospital in a Coma and focus on Savannah and Griffin's story. Savy's try to not only cope with what happen to her best friend but losing her boyfriend. Griffin is a nomad with a past, who slowly falls in love with Ryder Bay but with Savy. Will his past come back to haunt him forcing him to run or will hurt the only person who's given him a reason to stay. Can't wait for the next boo, have already reordered it.

Oh my gosh this book was sooo good. Jordan Ford did an an amazing job continuing the story of Ryder Bay. I could not put this book down as the story started to unfurl in the second half. She really makes you feel the emotions of her characters. I love the fact that Harley and Aidens story continued in this second book and you can see how their relationship grows as well as seeing how Savannah changes as well. Such an amazing story and I can not wait to read the next book!

Amazing! They’re adrift: Griffin has left behind his past, and Savannah has lost her anchors; from her Mother, to her ex boyfriend moving on, and now her bestie isn’t even there to cast her usual shadow. These two have a lot going on, and each and every hurdle in their lives sets up a heartfelt, irresistible love story.Where Over the Falls set the hook for Ryder Bay, The Impact Zone pulls you in even deeper. Savannah and Griffin’s story is an intense new installment in the series that’ll only leave readers wanting more!

Wow does not seem like enough. The series started out amazing and just keeps getting better. Savannah is so much more that an ex girlfriend, she has a depth that Griffin sees. Wonderful book and another must read by Jordan Ford

Very comprehensive. I'm an old and quite experienced sailor and purchased the book to consider it as a textbook for teaching my nephews how to sail. Needless to say, it makes a fabulous textbook.

I chose this rating as this truly is a wonderful book for beginners as it is so thorough and easy to understand! I just bought it before going on a sailing course myself and found it helpful to use even on the boat as I learned! Every sailor I spoke to knew of this book and said "oh that is the best book - I know that sailor." Actually it is not for dummies at all, in that it is not so basic that you feel insulted...No one else has ever been able to explain clearly to me the physics or principles behind sailing into the wind...yet this book did by comparing it to putting your hand out the car window and having the wind pull your hand - that is lift! It tackles quite deep subjects and explains all the terms...I would recommend this book to anyone before they attempt sailing - it will give you a great basis for enjoyment on the water!)

Very good for the person, like me, who knows nothing about sailing. I have only read about a third of the book so far, but I have learned a lot. I may deserve 5 stars, but a lot of the concepts of sailing are just difficult to understand without hands on experience, of which I at this point have none.

If you want to learn to sail, you're no dummy! This is a great addition to your sailing library. The authors are respected in the lifestyle. Unlike some other books on the subject, the authors are not pompous and their expertise. Topic sections are to the point with how and why.

Comprehensive and then some! Very racing oriented as you would expect given the authors' credentials. Good coverage of sailing with children and an overview of boat-born medicine. Lots of performance sailing advice. Best knot tying instruction illustrations for the basic sailing knots. I recommend getting the paper version as the Kindle version, at least on the PC and Android, chops off the right end of the illustrations.Overall a valuable addition to your sailing library if you are new to the sport as am I.

Impressive book in coverage of much of the topics that need to be addressed. I am not totally new to sailing but not very experienced and have not sailed for many years. For me it was a refresher course.

I bought the book for a friend who is going on a cruise with me as my crew. I got it for him because he needs to understand sailing and I have such a high regard for this book.

Easy to read and informative, this book is a great place for beginning sailing enthusiasts like myself.

"The effect of the new translation, which should be applauded, is to make Beauvoir more herself. . . still lively, still apropos." --Slate“This is the edition Beauvoir herself would have wanted, one so true to the original that we can hear her voice in the text. Borde and Malovany-Chevallier’s new translation is long overdue, and it is a triumph.” —Margaret Simons, Distinguished Research Professor Emerita, Southern Illinois University“[Borde and Malovany-Chevallier’s translation] can be read with confidence, enlightenment, and pleasure. . . . A significant step forward and a remarkable achievement. So if you’re one of those people who always meant to read The Second Sex—why not now?” —Women’s Review of Books “From Eve’s apple to Virginia Woolf’s room of her own, Beauvoir’s treatise remains an essential rallying point, urging self-sufficiency and offering the fruit of knowledge.” —Vogue "[A] long-awaited achievement." –"Book Bench," newyorker.com

I believe that this book is even more timely and significant today, than ever before. Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex (originally published in 1949), is a groundbreaking study, that was clearly years ahead of its time (it still is), in providing a thorough and well-thought-out thesis, that examines what/who has shaped the role, place, and personality of Women in the world at large, from the ancient societies of Mesopotamia right down to the present time. Clearly, we already know the answer to that one! However, what’s different about Simone de Beauvoir’s tome, she doesn’t let all the "women" off that easily, since she readily admits that not all "men" are responsible for the forced or assumed conditions of inferiority, mistreatment, injustice, inequality, etc., and all the other miseries that the "men" in "charge of the world" have imposed on women, and on other men for that matter. She also allots and assigns blame to the inactive, ignorant, narcissistic, and parasitic woman (her words), for not truly rising up against this system, and not just for women, but for all of humanity. Here are some excerpts that I found to be exceptionally important and relevant, and right-on-the-mark.From pages 381 – 382:"The girl’s character and behavior express her situation: if it changes, the adolescent girl’s attitude also changes. Today, it is becoming possible for her to take her future in her hands, instead of putting it in those of the man. If she is absorbed by studies, sports, a professional training, or a social and political activity, she frees herself from the male obsession; she is less preoccupied by love and sexual conflicts. However, she has a harder time than the young man in accomplishing herself as an autonomous individual. I have said that neither her family nor customs assist her attempts. Besides, even if she chooses independence, she still makes a place in her life for the man, for love. She will often be afraid of missing her destiny as a woman if she gives herself over entirely to any undertaking. She does not admit this feeling to herself: but it is there, it distorts all her best efforts, it sets up limits. In any case, the woman who works wants to reconcile her success with purely feminine successes; that not only requires devoting considerable time to her appearance and beauty but also, what is more serious, implies that her vital interests are divided. Outside of his regular studies, the male student amuses himself by freely exercising his mind, and from there emerge his best discoveries; the woman’s daydreams are oriented in a different direction: she will think of her physical appearance, of man, of love, she will give the bare minimum to her studies to her career, whereas in these areas nothing is as necessary as the superfluous. It is not a question of mental weakness, of a lack of concentration, but of a split in her interests that do not coincide well. A vicious circle is knotted here: people are often surprised to see how easily a woman gives up music, studies, or a job as soon as she has found a husband; this is because she had committed too little of herself to her projects to derive benefit from their accomplishment. Everything converges to hold back her personal ambition while enormous social pressure encourages her to find a social position and justification in marriage. It is natural that she should not seek to create her place in this world by and for herself or that she should seek it timidly. As long as perfect economic equality is not realized in society and as long as customs allow the woman to profit as wife and mistress from the privileges held by certain men, the dream of passive success will be maintained in her and will hold back her own accomplishments."From page 612:"Cinderella does not always dream of Prince Charming: husband or lover, she fears he may change into a tyrant; she prefers to dream of her own smiling face on a movie theater marquee. But it is more often thanks to her masculine “protection” that she will attain her goal; and it is men---husbands, lovers, suitors---who confirm her triumph by letting her share their fortune or their fame. It is this need to please another or a crowd that connects the movie star to the hetaera. They play a similar role in society: I will use the word "hetaera" to designate women who use not only their bodies but also their entire position as exploitable capital. Their attitude is very different from that of a creator who, transcending himself in a work, goes beyond the given and appeals to a freedom in others to whom he opens up the future; the hetaera does not uncover the world, she opens no road to human transcendence: on the contrary, she seeks to take possession of it for her profit; offering herself for the approval of her admirers, she does not disavow this passive femininity that dooms her to man: she endows it with a magic power that allows her to take males into the trap of her presence, and to feed herself on them; she engulfs them with herself in immanence."I couldn’t have said it better myself! This is an amazingly accurate description of the endless parade of the interchangeable and artless "scion" of young women (and there's no shortage of men, that fit this bill too), produced by Hollywood and the music industry here in the US and abroad. Their only talent is "self-aggrandizement" and "publicity" thanks to the polluted world of social media.I could go on and on about this all-important work, that is not only relative to women or "feminism," but encompasses something for all of humanity in general as well, men and women alike. Her words are truly eloquent and poetic too, made all the more so in this new edition and translation by Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier (thank-you, both), a huge debt of appreciation and gratitude is owed to them. I can truly say that Simone de Beauvoir was one of the greatest minds of our time, and believe me, there aren’t that many anyway! She herself acknowledges in how there are very few truly "great minds" in Art/Science/history that were women (due to their social position in the "hierarchy of man"), let alone very few men, for that matter. But, she explains that this is not due to some natural predisposition or biological cause, but is the result of the "man-made" world we live in, that is then assisted and enabled by the weak, unaware, unknowing, and just plain ignorant men and women that are willing to play along with the charade! The Second Sex (hardcover) by Simone de Beauvoir, complete and unabridged for the first time. Translated by Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier. Alfred A. Knopf, New York 2010.Love and Peace,Carlos Romero

This should be a must-read for any woman starting out on adult life, because it clearly lays out the forks in the road we will experience, and explores the human condition of half the population with a relatively objective eye. I found it stunningly relevant today, to my life, as a professional woman in technology.

Read this as a philosophy graduate student for fun with an amazing group of men and women. I echo the sentiment that it should be required reading for ALL adult humans in the 21st century, if only to gain a better understanding of how gender constructs have been so woven into our collective experience for so long, and why they need to be demolished. Are there better constructed arguments in existence? Yes. But that doesn't diminish the lasting contribution that this piece of literature has made to humanity, nor how revolutionary and ground breaking it is. So ahead of its time. It is also filled with wry humor, which is rare for a philosophical text, and even rarer for that humor to stand up nearly 70 years later. Is it going to be difficult for some readers to get through? Yes. It is intellectually demanding. But then again, so is being a contributing participant of society. It is worth your investment. I recommend reading it with a diverse reading group and discussing each chapter in person each week, over beverages.

This will be a long and arduous read, but I have learned a great deal from the very beginning. One of the best purchases I have made ever. It should have been required reading in my collegiate experience.

Every young woman should read this book. It's like a bible for girls to learn who they are in our world.

This is the complete version and has a lot of repetitive information. Nevertheless, the historical information and examples are important to help one understand unconscious bias that we all have, and especially we females have this about ourselves. Also, important is the discovery of why we females are treated like we are by people who supposedly love us--a mystery revealed.

An essential piece of work for understanding Simone de Beauvoir's perspectives and a great exploration of what the feminine meant to her. I've enjoyed the internal dialogues that have come from reading this book.

This "is" the magnum opus of women's literature. It was one the few books that were instrumental in women getting their rights. The book is very long because it covers just about every aspect of what females go through as women. The thing that makes this book so effective is that it isn't biased. It doesn't exxaggerate a woman's contribution to mankind and doesn't downplay her bad points as well. This, like the "manipulated man", is the truth with no chaser.

*"This isn't a flag-waving Fourth of July story, but it can be read as a gentle yet firm call for American readers to reflect on and embrace the ideal of pluralism. An aspirational vision in which inclusivity is as American as (apple) pie."―Kirkus Reviews, starred review*"There’s an echo of Ruth Krauss in the sweetly quotidian take on sharing possibilities and of Liz Gar- ton Scanlon’s All the World (BCCB 10/09) in the jubilant and lyrical togetherness, with an added hat-tip to classic ways of celebrating America’s birthday with her twenty-first century residents."― Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review*"This idyllic, joyously inclusive picture book takes an ordinary concept―sharing― and makes it extraordinary."―The Horn Book, starred review*"The best part, though, is the positive, inclusive representation of a loving community sharing a celebration, fun, and, of course, pie."―Booklist, starred review"Young readers will enjoy being a part of this halcyon summer day of family, friendship, and fun. What a discovery of words and images that inspire! I found in this delightful picture book, PIE IS FOR SHARING, a sense of renewed hope in the basic values of who we are and what we care about as a nation. Come join this Fourth of July multi-family picnic. Have a piece of yummy pie – everyone gets a taste for “Pie is for Sharing.” We care about each other, about family and friendships, about climbing trees and skinned knees, and about sharing our abundance with others.A few years ago, the author, Stephanie Parsley Ledyard, was watching her daughter bite into a scrumptious Minnesota home-made pie. Of course Stephanie asked for a taste, because “pie is for sharing.” And thus began the idea of a picture book about sharing. Not everything is for sharing. It’s hard to share a best friend, the best sitting branch on an apple tree, or the last chocolate chip cookie. But it’s special to share a hug, a song, a lap, a story. For a peek into the thoughts of the illustrator and author, read the two excerpts below about how this original idea developed. For more insight, read the full interview in the Horn Book. So fun to read! Here are my two favorite responses –Illustrator Jason Chin: I had the idea early on to set the book in a park in Burlington, Vermont, where my family often has picnics with friends. We’re there in the pictures, and most of the other families in the book are close friends of ours. The idea of setting the story on the Fourth of July came later, but when I thought of it, I immediately knew that it was right. I wanted to make a statement that sharing is as American as apple pie (or in this case, cherry pie).Author Stephanie Parsley Ledyard: I love what Jason did with the setting. I realized only gradually, over a period of months, that this was a July Fourth picnic. My first glimpses of the art were pencil sketches. Then much later, I got to see the full-color art via email. Finally, I printed it out on larger paper and saw all the red-white-and-blue details, and the flag on the house in the beginning, and I got it. (It takes me a while!) The Independence Day aspect has become a powerful part of the book to me — a reminder about the values of basic sharing and community in our country.Launch date is this month for this picture book, a true slice of apple-pie America at its best. Order your copy of a first edition. You will be glad you did as you share with a young reader the many delicious surprises in Stephanie’s words and Jason’s images.

This lovely picture book full of heart captures summer togetherness and celebrates the many ways we share with our family and friends. The delightful illustrations and gentle rhythms of the text will please readers of all ages, and are a case study in how an outstanding picture book is greater than the sum of its parts. Superlative!

The lyrical language brings emotion to the forefront of this lovely story...perfect to share at a July 4th picnic or anytime!

excellent story of SHARING for children and adults- perfect summertime read

Text that is beautiful to read aloud and pictures to be studied over and over showing the expansive, kind, hopeful communities of this country.

My granddaughter loved this book.It was written by a classmate of mine!!

Tender as a piecrust, sweet as cherry filling, “Pie”is a read you’ll want for the sharing.Annie Muse

The author had an exceptional ability to allow the reader to experience the strong emotions during this horrendous time. I have read many Holocaust books, and I feel that this one was was first rate with strong emotional depiction. His use of Hebrew and other unfamiliar vocabulary was accompanied by using context clues to help the reader, as well as a glossary. What I didn't like was that there were some phrases that were repetitive, but then again, so were many of the days. There were also times when the sentence structure was not quite correct, but I understand that translating the book into English can be difficult. Overall, however, I would recommend this book to people who are interested in the Holocaust and the lessons that can be learned from reading about it.

This book was an amazing account of a Jewish boy who was sent to the work camps. I just can't fathom how human beings can hate with such fierceness and treat others as if they are nothing, deserving no human kindness. It is a wonderful that anyone survived such in human treatment. The Holocaust must be remembered, that such atrocities do not repeat themselves.

This book was a real eye opener about a work camp that was in reality a torture camp that caused the starvation of body, mind and spirit of the Jewish inmates. Survival of the fittest was an understatement of these prisoners who were led to believe that work would free them while they were in many cases worked to their death.Kudos to Moshe Ziv who managed to survive these horrendous circumstances.

The author's incredible memory details horrific experiences suffered at the hands of Nazis, malicious fellow prisoners and German citizens. An incredible story of minute to minute survival through three camps, liberation, and final homecoming in Israel. This book should be forced down the throats of deniers and revisionist so that they may choke on the pages of reality.

Although a true story once you discovered where the buttons came from the story was pretty much over.

I haven't read much beyond a news story for years, but found myself completely wrapped into this story. Excellent book and would recommend this to people I know who are interested in the Holocaust

Great Holocaust book. I recommend it.

Excellent.

Former Tamarack Country Sheriff Cork O’Connor isn’t comfortable sitting around the house or flipping burgers for hungry tourists at his lakeside lunch shack. When a young woman named Charlotte Kane goes missing after a New Years Eve party, Cork joins the search and rescue mission and heads out into a classic Minnesota snowstorm. The woman’s corpse turns up four months later and circumstantial evidence for her murder points to a young Ojibwe Indian man named Solemn Winter Moon. Cork believes that Solemn is innocent and enlists the help of Jo, his wife and a practicing attorney, to help with Solemn’s defense. This stirs up considerable ill will towards the trio because the citizens of Aurora have already convicted Solemn in their hearts and minds. There is no shortage of other likely suspects such as Charlotte’s angry father and a Catholic priest with a suspicious background. Cork takes on the roles of private detective and “defense consultant” to his wife, investigating others in the community who might have motive and opportunity to kill Charlotte. This book is the fourth novel I’ve read in Krueger’s Cork Corcoran mystery series and it’s the best of the lot. He weaves a complex story with many fascinating characters to enjoy along the way. We also get some rich details about Cork, Jo, and the children of the Corcoran family that make the experience that much more enjoyable. About half way into the book I thought I’d figured out who the guilty party was but I was totally wrong. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way with surprises popping up at the most unlikely points. It’s only when you reach the end of the book that Krueger reveals who the murderer is. Once you read the first several pages of this book, you’ll have a devilish time putting it aside.

I had read the previous books in this series and could not remember why I had stopped. Shortly after starting this one I may have discovered the problem: Cork is a little slow. He brags about how he’s a sheriff at heart, suspicious and curious, but in truth he misses a lot. I saw numerous red flags, but he saw...nothing. Time and time again I was thinking he should have noticed something, asked something, pursued something, but he was oblivious. Sometimes he circled back eventually, and sometimes another character just flat out told him what he’d missed. And he’d think something like, “That makes sense.” I did think that I could predict how the story would go, but in this I was surprised. The plot got quite complicated and unexpected. But that’s not always a good thing.

This is the fourth book in a Series featuring the primary character, Cork O'Connor. I've just started the 5th. William Kent Krueger is a new author for me and I had not read any of his books. This series was started in 2004 and I don't quite remember how I started with him. But his books are exciting and suspenseful and flow very nicely. By now, in the 5th book of the series, I'm very fond of the characters and think of Cork and his family as people you would like to know because they are just good people and work at righting the wrongs of life. I'm hooked on the series so will read them all. Each book does stand on its own but it is nice to start at the beginning because you really get to know the characters and really learn to care about them.

In this, the 4th of the Cork O'Connor series, the story opens in the deep freeze of a Minnesota winter with a search for the missing daughter of a wealthy resident of Aurora, where former sheriff Cork O'Connor lives with his family and runs a burger joint. Months later, the spring thaws reveal a body: the missing girl, along with some questionable evidence found nearby. At the request of a friend, and in spite of disapproval from the newly elected sheriff, Cork gets involved in the investigation, anxious to protect the rights of the only suspect, Solemn Winter Moon, a troubled young half Indian who was romantically involved with the dead girl. As Cork discovers, secrets and lies abound, complicating his efforts to know the truth about the crime, the victim, her family, the suspect, the law in Aurora, and even threats to his own family. Raised Catholic, Cork has long struggled with a crisis of faith, and in this novel, he comes full face on with what it means to believe. Or not.One of Krueger's great gifts in writing this series is his ability to portray the landscape and atmosphere of Cork O'Connor's Minnesota. Place becomes another character in these novels....but not so much in Blood Hollow. Even the wine colored stream that provides the title seems meagerly evoked and unimportant, a throwaway description. While the murderer was apparent, at least to me, early on, much of the mystery is confusing and incomprehensible. One character's disappearance years earlier is never solved, and the motive, though explained, seems more than a little incredible. Some of the characters, too, are merely outlines, without enough depth to make us care about them or even believe in them.Blood Hollow does not equal Krueger's earlier O'Connor entries, in my opinion. However, the man can write, so I look forward to moving on to Mercy Falls, next in the lineup.

My favorite Krueger novel is always the one I last read. I was almost convinced I knew who the murderer was several times only to be surprised in the end. This was number four for me in the Cork O'Conner series, I have read them all in order (recommended), and the fifth one - "Mercy Falls" - is on the way. David B. What a terrific book!!! This is such a fun way to get closer to your horse, whether you can ride the horse or not! I'm enjoying training my youngsters and even a couple of "old retirees" who now feel like they have a job again! They all eagerly look forward to their daily "training sessions" (and all the treats) and the attention they get. Happy horses!!!!

I used a lot of the exercises with a troubled horse who used to drive people away from her with her bad attitude. She was really engaged with the new "toys" (tools) in the exercises, and was quite willing to try the new things I was asking her. We haven't gotten too far into the book yet, but it has helped our relationship, and she is always curious at anything new I try.

I received this book a few days ago, and I think it is really a nice book! It has alot of information, not only on tricks, but also to get your horse used to many objects as well. It is easy to understand, with beautiful pictures that well explain how to do the exercizes and tricks. It has alot of good advice with details. My Quarter horse gelding will be 19 this year, and there are simple tricks in there I know we will enjoy working on together. He already is learning how to hug! I do not plan on teaching him to lay down, and rearing is out of the question, but there are so many tricks you can teach your horse, and many ideas to just have fun with your horse. I highly recommend this book!

Recently my horse became spooky. He had a bad scare, I fell off and was a little hurt, and for a while we needed a new way to play and engage. This book filled the bill. The "tricks" aren't so much tricks as ways of engaging with your horse at a new level. The basic training exercises were fun. One is to have the horse step into a tire. Of course, at first the tire is one of those "scary" objects. Then, I got the funniest look. Then, it was like "oh well, if you think I should put my foot in there I will but I think you're crazy," and things improved from there. I intend to keep working with the exercises in this book for a long time. Perhaps this fall I'll show off to all my "ride all the time, forget the ground work" friends.

I have 5 horses so far and I can't wait to try these methods with all of them. Every horse I have will gain something beneficial from what I've learned.

Well, I'm half way through and they still haven't suggested any quest or aids to use to communicate about a "trick".

She loves it

I was able to utilize these tricks for my horse and he loves to do the tricks for treats! We have so much fun!

Last Ape Standing: The Seven-Million-Year Story of How and Why We Survived

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Q&A with Chip Walter, author of Last Ape Standing Photo by Richard Kelly Photography 1.: Your previous book, Thumbs, Toes and Tears, helped explain human nature by looking at traits that are unique to humans and then exploring how they came to be. Since that book was written, it’s become increasingly clear that many other species of humans co-existed and competed in the past, and that now all of them are gone, but one. Us. Why have we survived when so many others failed? Chip Walter: It’s fascinating how that happened because on the surface it really doesn’t make any evolutionary sense. Our direct line of ancestors faced a dilemma more than a million years ago that could have ended them right there and then. Their brains were growing larger AND they had taken to walking upright at the same time. Both adaptations were helpful except for one problem: walking upright narrows the birth canal and that makes it difficult to bring larger brained babies to full term. The solution was to bring the babies into the world prematurely, and extend their childhood longer AFTER birth. You wouldn’t think that bringing increasingly helpless preemies into existence and then lengthening the time it takes for them to have the next generation of children wouldn’t seem to be a very effective survival strategy. Might be smarter to shorten childhood and have more babies faster. If you were a betting ape in those days, you wouldn’t have given our direct ancestors much of chance. But the creativity and inventiveness our uniquely long childhoods make possible are the reasons, ultimately; that we survived when so many others were shown the evolutionary door. 2.: You say that at one point the human race had been whittled down to near extinction, and only a few thousand of us remained. Why? How did we bounce back? CW: Around 75,000 years ago the genetic evidence indicates we were, at best, down to a few thousand childbearing Homo sapiens. This would mean there were fewer of us than there are wild chimpanzees on Earth right now. The planet was in the grip of a very nasty ice age that had dried out most of Africa. Pockets of Homo sapiens existed in South Africa and maybe a few other locations. Around this time there was also an immense volcanic eruption in Indonesia and the Homo sapiens in Africa were in the path of the ash cloud. (Other human species were not down wind or in the direct path.) Ironically, around the same time you begin to see the first glimmers of human creativity and symbolic thinking which is necessary for things like art, sculpture and language. Those extra skills apparently helped us bounce back, generate newer, better survival strategies and share innovative ideas. 3.: You have a chapter in the book entitled “The Moral Primate." You point out that most other animals aren’t, don’t worry about being fair, but we struggle with good and evil all the time. Where does our sense of morality come from? CW: One of the outcomes of a longer childhood for us was that our ancestors found themselves faced with two BIG problems. They had already been forced out of the jungle into the savannas of Africa. Savannas are far more dangerous places to live and survive—more predators, less available food, greater distances to cover. On top of this, they now had to deal with raising these “early-born” infants and children who required their care for longer and longer periods of time. So how do you deal with that without getting wiped out? You bond, you rely upon one another more than ever to help keep the whole troop alive. BUT it’s not quite that simple because at the same time you also have to compete with the very same people you rely on for help. You contend with them for mates, for food, for power and status within the troop. This is one of the great paradoxes of the human condition. We all must both compete and cooperate with one another. This raised the first “moral” questions. Do you put yourself first, or do you put others in the group first? Do you kill, bully or hurt another to get more food, a mate, more power in the short term, and if so, what are the long term consequences? You could be killed or bullied yourself, or tossed from the group, the equivalent of suicide on the savanna. Longer term, you might need that person’s help some day. Maybe thinking a little less selfishly would be a good idea? So we evolved a basic moral code, one in which we want to be treated by others the way we treat them—the golden rule, which is universal and expressed in virtually every human culture on earth.

What I expected was a lot more detail on the approximate twenty-seven "human" species that the author, Chip Walter, mentions, perhaps with drawings of what the species looked like, maps of ranges, and other various concrete details. What I got was some "gosh-wow!" big science speculation/insight. I like "gosh-wow" science, but I wanted to see more of the details, although, frankly, the details I want are probably beyond the information we have available. The material is organized into broad thematic/chronological units chapter by chapter. Thus, the first chapter is a reflection on the deep time of the "Human Evolution Calendar" and the gradual development of brain size, walking ability and other details of the human anatomy. Walter does provide a nice chart showing his view of what species evolved into what species in this chapter, although I wondered about his loose definition of "human." How three feet tall creatures with the 1/3 our brain capacities are human is not clear. Walter includes the robustus group in his definition of human. There may be a good reason for doing this, but I wasn't clear what the ground was, albeit for purposes of the book and stretching our imagination, it does make a point.Succeeding chapters discuss the importance of neoteny and childhood. Neoteny involves the preservation of childish features in older individuals. In the human species, the movement to bipedalism and the increase in brain size meant that human species had to have more development of children outside the womb. According to Walter, the extended period of childhood made human species more individual, more flexible, and more able to learn. Walter also ascribes much of the homo sapien form to radical neoteny as compared to other species. Further, Walter makes the interesting argument that the reason for sapiens success over that of the neanderthals was simply that sapiens had longer childhoods, which made for more flexibility and creativity.Flexibility and individuality meant that even greater brain power was needed to deal with social interactions. Social interactions for developing humans might have been more important than speed or strength, and that set up a feedback loop for brain development. Walter also theorizes that brain power in the form of imagination is a kind of display behavior that shows reproductive fitness, like the Impala's "stotting" behavior.Walter has some fascinating insights as to interspecies interaction. It seems clear based on lice that humans have that our species met another human species intimately enough to share lice. Likewise, it is clear that we share some genes with Neanderthals and the mysterious Denisovan species. This is all fascinating, and provisional as imaginable since all we have as hard evidence is a couple of molars and a finger tip. That we can do this much analysis with so little is mind-bending.Two more fascinating insights. First, Walter has a description of the genetic bottleneck seventy thousand years ago in Africa when sapiens were reduced to less than ten thousand individuals. Walter speculates that this was due to the Toba eruption. Other species of humans were not affected because the ash might have blown west from Indonesia, blanketing Africa, but leaving Europe and Asia relatively unaffected. Walter explains:"Given these apparently enthusiastic migrations, you might think that as a species we were finally off and running, but there was that wintry climate that was setting in. By seventy thousand years ago it was in full, frigid swing and had begun to systematically rub out life everywhere on the planet. (We are living right now in what scientists call a slim “interglacial” period of this ice epoch, a bit of information that is itself chilling.) Genetic studies confirm that during this time Homo sapiens underwent what scientists call a “bottleneck event.” That is to say, we had been worn down to something like ten thousand total adult members, a troop or tribe here or there, scraping out a living, probably along ocean shorelines and receding lake beds. Ice ages rarely result in cold weather in Africa. Instead they parch the land, turn rivers into dry wadis, evaporate lakes, and wipe out the sustenance each provides. During some of these periods, the Nile itself was reduced to swamp and muck. Even today the continent is filled with ancient lake beds scarred by desiccated mud cracks that testify to exactly how arid the landscape had become. Whichever humans survived the first waves of these droughts, they had tools, but little else, and when water disappeared, so did the other animals, nuts, tubers, and fruit that supported them. Being at the top of the food chain did them little good once the chain itself was demolished."Another interesting bit of speculation is Walter's speculation that human self-identity emerged only within the last 50,000 years:"To understand why we have come to operate this way, think of social interaction as a kind of rapidly changing ecosystem made up of a mix of personalities that requires constant adaptation to the shifting agendas, relationships, alliances, and power struggles within the group. In the highly social and very bright species that preceded us, part of the battle for individuals would have been to keep motives and relationships straight in their own minds. Those among our ancestors who could successfully track and recall the behaviors of their friends and enemies would have excelled, survived, and passed their genes along. To manage this, they must have learned to symbolize different personalities. Maybe Goog tended to be aggressive; Targ, helpful and friendly; Moop, well organized and smart. This would have helped them “slot” others into organizational categories so they could deal with them in ways they saw fit, depending on their own personalities. Since these relationships only matter in so far as they are connected to you, along the way it would have been impossible not to eventually apply the same index to you. We became to ourselves another person in our social ecology. As evolution continually favored smarter and increasingly self–aware creatures from Homo erectus to ergaster to heidelbergensis, Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo sapiens eventually emerged. Both we and Neanderthals developed large brains and complex prefrontal cortices, but we developed in different parts of the world, under entirely different circumstances, split from a common ancestor.g We both may have developed spoken language, but very different kinds. We were both self–aware and capable of symbolizing, but to what extent remains unclear. Neanderthals may never have developed a highly complex and fully symbolic inner world, and Homo sapiens may not have pulled off this level of cerebral legerdemain themselves until fifty thousand years ago, maybe later."Walter offers some speculation as to what the world might have looked to these individuals:"Mithen imagines Neanderthals took a different path and evolved a complex combination of iconic gestures (think of the “crazy” gesture we use, an index finger twirling beside our head), songlike sounds to express emotions (more complex versions of the cooing and keening sounds we make), outright song and highly expressive dance movements (à la ballet and Broadway), all in concert to communicate on levels so intricate that they are beyond what we can even imagine. These weren’t muddled, caveman efforts to ape our Homo sapiens language, according to Mithen. He believes and makes a compelling argument that Neanderthals were musical and gestural virtuosos compared with us and the other human species that came before them. While we specialized in using our brains and vocal gifts as ways to deliver packets of symbols made of sound, Neanderthals evolved hyperrefined senses of sound, movement, and emotion."Walter ends with some speculation about future human evolution. He speculates that such evolution might involve further augmentation of intelligence and memory via cybernetics. At this point, the book becomes a useful guideline for science fiction writers.Walter is an excellent writer. He makes his arguments in a lucid and coherent fashion.

Utterly fascinating exposition of the latest theories on the evolution of modern Homo Sapiens, from the earliest fossilized traces to the present day. Not just the how, but the why, and told in a straightforward prose unfettered by the usual 7-syllable words anthropologists love to use to convince through obfuscation and confusion. What differentiates us from our past - and from our fellow denizens of the planet. How the people we once thought of as ignorant savages, the Neanderthals, left their heritage behind for us to enjoy - through interbreeding. Most of us whose ancestry is of the northern hemisphere still carry their DNA in our cells - from one to four percent. Why childhood is so much longer for us than for our cousins the primates, and why we are born utterly helpless - as well as upside-down (or at least compared to other animals).Sadly, the author gets bogged down in the latter part of the book, expounding at great length on the mysteries of the current human brain, and in a disconcertingly repetitive manner entirely out of character. As another reviewer wrote, it is almost as if there was a word count goal and the last part of the book was written to that end rather than to the subject at hand. Psychobabble is still psychobabble, whether in the guise of paleoanthropology or of psychiatry.Enjoy! But when you get bogged down in the last chapters, don't feel you've missed anything when you close the book in frustration - you'll have read the best part.

Last Ape Standing by Chip Walter"Last Ape Standing" is a journey into human evolution. Science writer, producer of award-winning science documentaries and professor at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science and Entertainment Technology Center, Chip Walter provides readers an interesting story of how we came to be. The book focuses on paleoanthropology and an engaging narrative that speculates to the best of our current knowledge how out of the twenty-seven human species, Homo sapiens came to be. This interesting 240-page book is composed of the following eight chapters: 1. The Battle for Survival, 2. The Invention of Childhood) Or Why It Hurts to Have a Baby), 3. Learning Machines, 4. Tangled Webs - the Moral Primate, 5. The Everywhere Ape, 6. Cousin Creatures, 7. Beauties in the Beast, and 8. The Voice Inside Your Head.Positives:1. Engaging and accessible prose.2. The fascinating topic of human evolution.3. Good use of charts and diagrams.4. The author makes clear what we do know versus what we don't know and to what degree; which only highlights the need for even more science. "Yet the best genetic evidence is currently so foggy that it places the time we and chimpanzees shared a common ancestor somewhere between four and seven million years ago, rather a loose estimate. So neither the fossil record nor genetic science can provide anything very detailed about the precise time of our emergence."5. The author does a good job of making the material accessible by using effective analogies. The use of the Human Evolutionary Calendar really helps the reader to keep timelines in perspective.6. Interesting studies and findings, "Studies reveal that knuckle-walking chimpanzees burn up to 35 percent more energy than we humans do as we stroll blithely down the street."7. The impact of neoteny. "The dictionary defines neoteny as `the retention of juvenile features in the adult animal'."8. A focus on paleoanthropology. "Even if a scientist has nothing more than a single, ancient molar or bicuspid to work with--which, in paleoanthropology, is often the case--it's remarkable how illuminating a tooth can be."9. The importance of the acquisition of language.10. The brain. "The purpose of brains generally is to organize the waves of sensory phenomena that nature's cerebrally gifted creatures experience." Good stuff.11. How the epigenome changes your brain. Interesting section.12. The evolution of the moral ape.13. Recent discoveries that have rocked the scientific world, "The remarkable thing about heidelbergensis, so named because the first specimen was found near Heidelberg, Germany, is that it is the species from which both we and Neanderthals descended. That news has utterly rearranged the human family tree."14. The importance of genetics. "Each of these species lived when we Homo sapiens did, and DNA evidence indicates that at least one also mated with us, and with Neanderthals. Human species embraced one another; it seems, in more than a metaphorical way when they had the chance."15. Hobbits! "The current consensus is that the last hobbit departed about seventeen thousand years ago, but some have speculated they may have lived on."16. Neanderthals! "Both we and Neanderthals carry the FOXP2 gene in our chromosomes, a snippet of DNA key to the development of speech (but not the language genes as some have characterized it; there is no language gene)." Many interesting theories on the demise of the Neanderthals.17. Human sexuality. "Several studies have revealed that men of nearly every culture are attracted to women whose waists are about 70 percent of the size of their hips."18. Creativity. "There is no getting around the conclusion that creativity, though it may once have been evolutionary filigree, has become the force that defines our species, and the behavior that separates us from all other living things."19. Self awareness. "As evolution continually favored smarter and increasingly self-aware creatures from Homo erectus to ergaster to heidelbergensis, Neanderthals, Denisovans, and Homo sapiens eventually emerged."20. Fascinating insight into autism and schizophrenia and how they relate. "Like schizophrenia, autism runs along a spectrum from mild to severe, and some of the underlying symptoms for it are similar: difficulty socializing with others, a tendency to become obsessed with specific behaviors, sometimes self-injury or the need for repetitive rituals that might involve entertainment, food, or dress."21. Links to notes and a formal bibliography.22. Excellent appendices.Negatives:1. Great charts and diagrams but they didn't translate as well on the Kindle. You may be better served getting the book instead of the digital version.2. The chapter on morality though interesting is covered much better in other books.3. More citations would have been helpful.4. A bit repetitive.5. Light on genetics.6. I liked the book quite a bit but I didn't love it. I can't put my fingers on it but the parts seem greater than the whole.7. A section/appendix on how to determine the age of bones would have been value added. In summary, this is a good book. Human evolution is a fascinating topic and new research adds fuel to the interest. Walter does a really good job of making the material accessible to the masses. He covers the most important species and focuses on the brain and paleoanthropology. I'm a big Kindle fan but the graphs and diagrams are not as effective digitally. The book is light on genetics and the chapter on morality could have been much better. That being said, I enjoyed the book and recommend it.Further suggestions: "Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters" by Donald R.
