The core of a true fairy tale is to impart a lesson in a story that draws people in. The Bird King is masterful at this, telling a story about a young woman and her friend that flee their home when they are persecuted for their faith. While the story is a grand adventure, and beautifully told, it also asks you to question faith and acceptance as well as the power a person has within them when they focus less on material things and instead on their own potential and the things they hold true. The story flips the script on a traditional fairy tale based in old Europe by telling the story of Fatima, a concubine, and Hassan, her friend who is gay and possesses the ability to bend geography with his mapmaking skills. The Inquisition is moving south through Spain, and conquering land of people with different traditions and faith. Fatima and Hassan flee and as they are pursued by Luz, the Inquisitor, they decide to search out the island of the Bird King, a tale begun for them and told out in many ways by them over the years. Along the way they have assistance and resistance from jinn and a Breton monk. This is an absolutely beautiful story.

Having read the tale The Conference of the Birds in my teens it is a joy to read this story set in a historical.period where the world's of Islam, Christianity and Judaism.intersect. The story is told thru 2 outcasts and is bisected by this old Sufi tale. It is a story of awakening. It is a story about courage to be and to love.

Delightful in many respects, with a story that carries one along, turning pages as smoothly as the ships that sail through its pages, this novel is also infused with a very dark and untruthful aspect that I alas found thoroughly disheartening.The tale takes place at the end of the Reconquista, the long recovery of Spanish territory from Moorish conquest, which began with the Umayyad invasion of Hispania in 711 and at its peak included most of the Iberian peninsula and a large chunk of southern France.Iberia's Christian rulers drove most of the Moors from their lands in the 13th century, with the liberation of Cordoba in 1236 and Seville in 1248, respectively. Granada remained the only Muslim holdout until 1491, when this story takes place.This book would have readers believe that only the Spanish Inquisitors were cruel. It lightly glosses over the habitual Muslim enslavement of others, and wants readers to believe that the Muslim rulers were all good and kind. Yes, there are brief mentions of the Ottoman conquests of non-Muslim lands, and the central character is a concubine of the last Sultan of Granada.Nothing here, however, suggests that in fact the Muslim conquerors ignited the Inquisition in the first place through their evil 700-year conquest of Spain and southern France. From beginning to end, that Moorish era was so full of murder, plunder, enslavement and debasement of non-Muslims that Maimonides, the great Jewish physician and philosopher, fled Spain and subsequently provided some choice descriptions of the horrors of living under Muslim rule.Those who want a realistic picture of the history should read Richard Fletcher's Moorish Spain.I definitely enjoyed this book, as well as the characterizations.But the history presented here is as fanciful and false as the magical jinns who populate the story, along with the royal concubine and a lowly but extremely talented mapmaker.It's fiction, and the history is purely fiction as well.

I admire this book more than I like it. It features solid prose, an interesting and vividly drawn historical setting, realistic characters, and some very enjoyable fantasy elements -- Vikram the jinn being the greatest of these -- but ultimately it didn't work for me because I had no idea how the author intended the conclusion to be understood. Maybe that matters not at all, but it made for a muddled reading experience. [Spoilers follow.]The bare outlines of the plot involve Fatima, a royal concubine, who is forced to flee the Emirate of Granada in its last days after the Inquisition comes calling and threatens her best friend, the cartographer Hassan. Vikram aids them in their escape and they end up in a mysterious place described as 'an idea with a location.' They have many adventures on the way, and Fatima (unconvincingly) changes over the course of a few weeks or months from a melancholy but self-centered individual into someone who repeatedly risks her life to save her friends. The chief antagonist is Luz, a lay sister working for the Inquisition. There is also a nameless evil thrown into the mix, which may or may not be responsible for some of Luz's more outrageous behavior.I don't think adding the Nameless Evil to the mechanisms of the Inquisition was a particularly good or necessary move on the author's part; the 'Holy Office' was plenty bad enough on its own. Still less is this useful if the Evil's presence was meant to be exculpatory in any way. And then there's the ending. Let's create a haven from the nastiness of the world, admit a few lucky travelers, and then close it off forever from other desperate refugees in order to ensure our survival? What?Here's hoping that Ms. Wilson's next novel will focus on Vikram. You can tell she loves writing the character, and he's by far the most interesting thing about this book. I would recommend this novel for its depiction of a time and place you don't see much of in historical fiction, but be prepared to come up against some really disconcerting plot elements.

I realize this book was published in 1998, and I thought it might be a bit dated, but bought it to read with my son because it seemed thorough and included a section on STDs. Overall, it's a well written book with lots of good, accurate, morally neutral information. However, Chapter 10, entitled "If I'd Known Then What I Know Now!" contains quotes from men such as the following: "Don: I wish I'd known I could have been a lot more aggressive with girls - but I don't want any of my daughter's friends to hear that!" and "Larry: If I could live my life over, I'd like to have the ability to really figure females out. I've learned that what they say isn't always what they mean." Aaaahhh!! No, no, no! This is a book about sex!! It is not OK to be more aggressive with girls! NO MEANS NO!! There needs to be a revised edition with a section on consent!!! While it may be true that people (and not only females!) don't always say what they mean, NO MEANS NO, and furthermore, failure to say NO does not imply consent!!

This book is really not for younger adolescents. My son is 12 and after I previewed this book, I didn't feel he was ready for it. I did photocopy the first three chapters. Most of it seemed more appropriate for high schoolers. There was one very odd situation mentioned, where a boy asks if masterbating with his male cousin means he is gay? The book then goes on to say it is normal for boys to do this together. I strongly disagree and will share photos from the book.

This book is age appropriate for a high schooler! It talks very little about basic facts regarding physical changes, yet talks extensively about sex. This will not help your child understand why they are growing hair or other physical changes. It will just encourage them(as if they would ever need it!!!) to experiment with sex.I'm seriously disappointed and fairly disturbed amthat this is geared toward such a young age.

This book is awesome!!! My son is getting ready to go to middle school and with that said I felt that I needed to get ahead of what all of his school mates may share and expose him to. This book covers EVERYTHING. Including explaining what the changes that they may be noticing in girls and why. Which at first I was a little taken aback, but I would never want my son to embarass a girl who may have had an accident. So, with that said . . . I have recommened this book to any and all of my friends and fellow Moms who have a sone that is also on his way to Middle School. I would also like to add that the way the book is written is very relatable for a tween. I love that author worked with 2 Middle School aged boys and of course doctor(s) to write the book. It's not a clinical/encyclopedia delivery of information. I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic perspective for boys aged 11-13. It helps take the uncomfortableness out of the discussion while exploring most everything a boy would need to know correctly, instead of from the locker room. Some parts were a little more detailed than most 11 year olds need but we used that as a great topic starting point. I would strongly advice the parent read it before the child so you can decide what you want them to know and so you can openly discuss the topics. It's pretty in-depth and covers everything from hair growth to girl's menstruation to sexuality and life style choices as well as what counts as "sex." My sons found it very helpful and I enjoyed that the conversations afterward were more open.

A fun and funny way to "tell" your son some of the things you just can't say to him. I did look through the book first and write in a few things that my husband and I believe and want him to know. This is a good resource for boys entering puberty. My son just turned 11, and whether I'm ready for this or not, his body is starting to change. I of course am happy and willing to answer any questions he has, but this book gives him a way to find things out without needing to speak directly to me about embarrassing issues. I bought it for him along with another less specific book (the body book for boys by rebecca paley) and just put them on his bed. When he found out about it, he spent the next hour reading by himself. I asked later which book he liked better and this was the winner by far. It simply has the information he wants in a way he can easily understand. I also want to add that the mentions of bondage or S&M are total misrepresentations of what is in this book. There is an illustration of a boy on a rack (the torture device) being stretched, and a person in an executioner's type hood beside him, and the boy is saying "more! more!" Okay, if you are flipping through this book, you might see this drawing and imagine that it's demonstration some bizarre sex act. However, if you actually READ the page, it's a kid who is shorter than his friends and wants to grow! Jeez people, read before you judge. It's a good, clear book. It tells information without judgement in a clear and direct way. It does go into detail... which is what the kids want to know. Knowledge is power.

It's exactly what you'd expect - odds are if you're looking for the go-to book about your car this is what you'll want.Unfortunately we owned an SRT-4, and it does say right in the description that it's not for the SRT-4, but after failing to find anything anywhere else we went for it anyway. Much of the book still applied, though definitely not all of it.All-in-all no complaints, just wish there was something out there for the SRT-4 when we needed it!

I received the book sooner than I was told I would, so I was able to get reading to fix the problem I was having! I wish the book came in hard cover. In fact, I think it does. The price was way too much for me to pay! It just is a little easier for me to read it. I feel the Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual was very helpful for me. The illustrations were very helpful!If I need something in the future, I will be more than happy to utilize Amazon again.

Good book, but would have liked more detail on how to replace the middle motor mount on passenger side. It doesn't tell you not even half of what you're supposed to do to replace it.

It has been invaluable getting a 2001 Neon up and running again. It is a Chilton guide so it's not a factory guide, but is very helpful.

Her writing style is very engaging, and the information is certainly a must for the serious artist who strives for realism. I am a novice and wanted to learn about reconstruction. This and a few other books came highly recommended. Had checked out a few from the library to see which I wanted to purchase.

I'm not a sculptor but as an artist/designer I have used many tutorials and instructional material throughout college and on personal projects. I found this book to not only to be straight forward and organized but interesting and informative.

I'm in law enforcement and have always been interested in facial reconstruction. I'm not a professional sculptor by any means, but compared to other books like this, this was far easier to understand when it comes to the actual reconstruction phase. :) I mostly do facial sketches, but I have starting working with clay, and while I think I need more experience with clay, I will use this book as a reference in my future sculpting practices! Also, very interesting stories and I really enjoyed the use of visual aids to explain a point (the kid's drawings were the best!). I'll be interested in more books from Mrs. Flood in the future!

I was unsure about this story. The beginning seemed slow, and I even put it down (okay, put my device down!) not expecting to pick it back up. But I had some time and gave it another try. I am so glad I did.The author does some fun, unexpected things trying together (seemingly) disconnected topics, issues, and event from recent history.The thing is... he does a pretty good job at it. When he first began introducing some of these ideas, it at first felt like a cheap shot to get attention from one fringe group or another. But as the plot continues, he makes he case, as it were.But, what earned a really good review for this title was character development and the ending of the story. It's rare that I'm completely surprised any more by the ending of any story, so when an author surprises me near the last (virtual) page... and it's a surprised that pleases me aesthetically... That's something I applaud.One more thought: Every self-publishing author and his brother, it seems, writes books in series. I was absoLUTEly delighted to realized that 49 Days is a stand-alone story. The plot holds water, as it were, without a compulsion to get the next volume to resolve cliff-hangers. I was completely and fully satisfied with the plot as the book ends. That said, in the afterword, Mr. Hamre indicated he was considering a sequel which, if he writes it, would be published in 2015. I enjoyed the first book so much, I would read the next - NOT because it's the only way to find out what happens, but in the hopes of another enjoyable experience watching the characters deal with and resolve to the best of their abilities their odd (and, of course, dangerous) situations. IN the mean time, I went out and found two other titles by Mr. Hamre (which also, delightfully, are stand alone novels).

The writing is a bit of a mess (e.g. tenseness for tension) and dialog and characters are wooden, yet this author is a true story teller with a certain rough directness. Ideas are well researched and even thought provoking. The story unwraps at a satisfying pace and the tension ratchets up. Well edited with no obvious grammatical lapses or miss-spellings. It’s good to see an author take care over this as errors of this sort can spoil the narrative flow.About a quarter way through I felt I would have trouble finishing 49 Days and would not read any more of the author’s stories. Instead, this story became steadily more compelling. I look forward to its sequel and to considering other books by Hamre.

Having read and studied Strassman's book on his legally approved DMT trials years ago I was instantly captured by Erik Hamre's sci- fi hypothesis. Thoroughly enjoyed the thrilling ride, great characters, great plot (refreshingly so) and great writing. Keep it up Eric the ratings say it all.

I hadn't expected to enjoy this as much as I did as it sounded a bit different that my usual picks. It had a great pace - exciting and intriguing throughout to make it hard to put down. There were a few unexpected plot twists, which are always welcome because who wants to figure everything out way before you read it??!!! I am purchasing Book 2 right now so I can see where this story is going.

The action kept you interested while the characters were being developed. The concept of the story was not rote where the guy has to rescue the 'princess', then everyone lives happily ever after. I liked the substance of the plot. It was a subject I had never thought about and you kept me asking, what would come next. And your main characterters are very likable - well, the ones you wanted us to like. I will be reading the next book "50 Days"

Presented an alternate view of the universe that sort of coincided with many religious notions (and a bit of stretch here and there). Overall a good read that made me think about how God actually handles the passing of the soul.

Researchers are just beginning to tap into DMT's potential. The author has given us his exciting interpretation of the myriad possibilities of this amazing substance that is naturally found in plants and animals....including humans!

Refreshingly different than most sifi/fantasy novels I have read recently. A few editing problems, but not enough to be distracting. Finally a book that kept me involved. Wow! Going to download Book 2 ASAP.
