I like that each stitch shows the diagram as well as the written instructions. Sometimes I do not understand the written instruction or just read them wrong and the diagram helps to make it easier to follow. The photographs are colorful and give you a good idea of what your project will look like. The chapters are grouped well making things easy to find even when you are not sure what you want exactly. I would recommend this book to anyone who crochets from beginner to advanced.

The stitch patterns for the most part are fairly basic, but I did find at least half that I haven't used. I have 3 different stitch pattern books that I use to create my own designs and patterns, and this is a great addition. My favorite part of the book is the pictures. They are close enough for you to see detail and can easily tell if you are doing it correctly. The directions are very clear and even beginners without any knowledge of any stitches other than ch, sc, and dc will have a very easy time picking up skill.

I love this book! Just purchased my third copy of this book. 2 of my previous copies have gone missing after I showed other family members who crochet. Very suspicious. I love that it teaches how to do stitches and how many chains you would need to start with. I love the pictures and diagrams. It's great for beginners to advanced!!

Was hoping for more innovative stitches. Not so much, or at least not from what I could see without working up stitch samples of my own.Also the swatches are too small scale to really tell similar ones apart, let alone get an idea about their structure.Instructional parts of this book are very good and I like the spiral binding.But in the end this wasn't the stitch book for me, so I returned it.

I really liked this book because it gives you the hook sizes in both European and United States. I had figured it out by looking at mine and printed out a page to keep handy. I like it in the book which I keep right by my crochet projects. My daughter loves the many lovely different patterns so you can make up your own afghan and then add the perfect edge to it. This book is a MUST for all crocheters - beginners and experts. I've been crocheting for 47 years and the book is great!!

This is the book that taught me how to crochet and everything else I needed to know. It lays out all of the basic stitches and how to read patterns. I find myself going back to it every time I start a new project, and it has a TON of different stitch patterns in the 2nd half. If you want to learn how to crochet, GET THIS and then supplement with some youtube videos. If you are a veteran crochet-er, the patterns would probably be the main benefit for you.

This is my absolute favorite crochet book. It's essential & is my "go to" when patterns fail to accurately explain a stitch. It has everything & the diagrams along with the written explanation help so much. The pictures are very clear to see the finished product...and grouping the styles by color was clever. I learned to crochet with this book. It's all you need.

Being a beginner at crocheting, I took one look through this book and can tell it is holding a storehouse of instruction for me that I need now and will need later as well. Even though I have purchased other books on crochet, I think The Crochet Stitch Bible will be my "go-to" book over the years as I learn and build stitch upon stitch. The photos of actual crochet swatches are numerous and illustrated graphics are easy to understand.

Disappointing purchase. The title is grossly misleading, this is more accurately described as the complete dictionary to chip carving. Without any real flow or guidance the book just jumps straight into complicated borders and designs without actually explaining the fundamentals of the craft. The book is ok if you want high gloss pictures of chip carvings far beyond the capabilities of a complete beginner, but even some of those pictures are oddly out of focus or blurry.For the true beginner I would recommend watching YouTube videos. The only truly useful information for a beginner lies within the first 35 pages or so where the author goes into detail on how to correctly hold and position the knives. Lets be serious with ourselves for a minute here though, less than 5 minutes of googling will reveal the exact same information. There is, at no point in the book, any sort of description on how to draw patterns, only on how to trace a pattern. Thanks but I learned how to trace in elementary school, I would much rather have instruction on how to use a drawing compass to design the complicated geometric designs involved in chip carving. After a few days of reading the book and trying to teach myself skills FAR beyond the beginners level I hopped on YouTube and within 30 minutes was making extraordinary progress. Disappointing.

My dad loves chip carving, so I bought him this for Father's Day. Looking through it, it looks very well written and detailed with how to pictures and designs. It looks to be more for an advanced student, with some really beautiful items to make. There is quite a bit of variety and some unique crafts. I really think he will enjoy it and perhaps make me something out of it. ;)

Wayne had/has a major role in promoting Chip Carving here in the USA. I've taken a Carving and Design Class from him and seen his kitchen with cabinet doors and breakfast nook bench sides chip carved. He's really a GREAT guy! I've now taught Chip Carving at Carving Clubs and the local WoodCraft store for many years.

This book is great for beginners to learn some basic techniques and get started in chip carving. Some nice project ideas. My beginning chip carver (age 17) loves it and is inspired to try harder projects. We received some very pretty chip carved Christmas ornaments this year.

I wish more teachers did this.Putting ideas into simple words can also help you recognize how different words carry meaning other than just telling you what something is. This is especially true for things that people often have strong feelings about, like the laws of the land, or our body parts for making new people, or machines for burning cities. Special words can quietly suggest if something is a good or a bad idea, or cover up bad feelings. Playing the game of using only simple words can help you see things more clearly for what they actually are, and say just what you mean. So, this book shows us a way to pay special attention to how our own thinking bag works. And I think that's really, really cool.

Growing up in the 1990’s, one of the defining books that helped me understand the world around me was David Macaulay’s The Way Things Work . Using “cartoonish” drawings of plenty of everyday (and not so everyday) machines, I gained plenty of useful knowledge that probably led me to eventually earn my Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. While Macaulay’s illustrations were straight forward enough that they didn’t need explanations, some concepts around today certainly need some words to help gain an understanding of the way things work.Enter Randall Munroe, famed “xkcd” webcomic author and an all around smart guy. In late 2012, he published a comic that described each of the systems in NASA’s Saturn V rocket with simple words. Described as “U.S. Space Team’s Up Goer Five,” the concept of using shorter, more common words to explain complicated concepts came to its full fruition in Thing Explainer. Using the thousand most common words, Munroe manages to humorously and thoroughly explain such “things” as the U.S. Constitution, The International Space Station, and the Large Hadron Collider (amongst many other common and complicated ideas).While the concept is fun and this book could easily be used to help children understand these fascinating ideas, the thousand-word constraint is also its biggest weakness. Sure, I could deduce that “shafts” were usually “sticks” (or “hallways” if they were like mine shafts), and “fire water” often meant gasoline (or some other combustible fuel). However, I often found myself trying to figure out what the actual name of the item or part in question was because the “simple” name wasn’t self-explanatory. Also, it was sometimes a challenge to read all the small text, as it usually wasn’t arranged in a linear format, instead appearing in chunks around the illustrations to be close to the parts that were being described.A unique concept to bring advanced technological knowledge to everyone, I give Thing Explainer 4.0 stars out of 5.

The thing about this book is that it only uses the ten hundred most used words by people to tell you about things that are hard to understand. It makes it sound kind of strange because you hear some words over and over again, but all in all, it is a very fun book to look at.The man that wrote the book wrote about "Under a car's front cover" and the "US Space Team's Up Goer Five" and lots of things that have to do with a "Sky Boat." There is a page about "Colors of Light" but it is in black and white, so it is not as good as other pages. There is a big table in the middle that is "the pieces everything is made of" that has "the stuff they put in pools so nothing bad can grow in them," "brown metal that we use to carry power and voices" and "stuff you drink so doctors can look inside your body" along with all the other rocks and metals and air that is really fun to look at.I paid money for "Thing Explainer" to put it under the tree for my seven year old, but I will have to read it before he does, I am sure.

Randall Munroe's earlier book "What If..." was a really, really, good read which gave me the impression that this one would just as good. However, I think this book was the author's personal exercise at word wizardry using "common" words which, at times, made the book cumbersome to read or comprehend. The one thing that the author hasn't lost is his acute sense of humor -- very engaging. I hope he'd consider rewriting this book with "regular" words such as "Atomic Bombs" instead of "Machine for Burning Cities".Finally, bear in mind, all that jazz above is from this adult's point of the view. My 13 year old, on the other hand, found it extremely funny and engaging and actually remarked that "This guy really knows how to explain things!" (No kidding!)Final Score: Randall - Texan Hawk, 1-0.

I like the genre and the ideas were interesting. Unfortunately, the execution was not great. I read all the way through hoping for a payoff that never really came.There are copious grammar errors. Not like a Nigerian scam email, but just plenty of things that should’ve been caught in editing and weren’t. Verb tense errors, extra words, grammar mistakes in dialogue that don’t seem intentional (not a means of developing character voice, it just seems the author doesn’t know the grammar rule she’s breaking). If the reader also doesn’t know, ok, but even as a teenager I would’ve noticed and found these things annoying. If I paid for a book it should at least have undergone solid proofreading, if not content editing also.As for content, like I said, the ideas are interesting, but they aren’t ever really fleshed out fully. They just sort of exist as a backdrop for a plot that’s all about emotion. On that note, for a book that’s essentially about the power of love, it’s disappointingly shallow in its emotional depictions. Way too much tell and not enough show. There is a fair bit of dialogue about the characters’ emotions, in ways that just don’t ring true to life. It’s one thing to narrate the first person’s emotional journey; too much is still weak writing, but it makes more sense. But every single emotional revelation happens through a conversation that seems like it would happen in a therapist’s office instead of a hidden bunker in a war zone. It’s just too much.A standing gripe of mine not specific to this story is the love interest. Firstly, they “love” each other after like five minutes, and secondly, he starts off gruff and a bit controlling and changes a bit over the series, maybe because she loves him? It’s a variation of the Beauty and the Beast theme, the love of a good woman will soften a hard man. That’s not a healthy characterization of love for teenage girls. If a man is rough and controlling, it isn’t going to get nicer. I wish women especially would stop writing these personalities as romantic.I want to say good things about the book. I suppose I cared enough about the world to read through all three books. I like when a writer isn’t afraid to sacrifice characters for better storytelling, and there was some of that, although given the tell-not-show writing style, there were missed opportunities there. I liked some of the characters (Aron was my favorite, I was solidly team Avron despite knowing it would never happen).All in all, I don’t hate that I read it. It wasn’t a complete waste of my time. But it wanted to be better than it was and just never made it.

Okay so I received this as an advanced reading copy, buuuutttt life got in the way and I just finished it tonight. It of course being the last book in the Configured Trilogy.I've read these books since the beginning and its bizarre to think that Avlyn's story is done. Overall all the loose ends and plots come together very nicely, the only complaint I do have is that it felt very rushed towards the end with the final battle and Avlyn's recovery. But ultimately the ending was sweet and I felt satisfied with epilogue.Recommend for those that enjoy dystopian books/series and scifi. If you have read any of the others in the series then you have to know how it ends!

This series was a lot of fun. The main characters were very likable, particularly Aaron. The story was paced well and featured an intelligent, competent narrator. My only complaint would be that the narrator's love interest seemed kind of basic, which didn't serve her love triangle as well as it should've. However, he grows on you.

This series of books, like many others, keep your attention for the most part all the way through until about three quarters of the way through the final installment. It's at this time when you realize it has been all build up and action to that point and just like all of the others, will not have enough time to finish the story. The book just seems to end. It's like the writer gets bored and has no other ideas so they just wait until the last chapter and have the hero save the day in two or three paragraphs and that's it. No real conclusion or follow up.

I’m sad that the little series is done. But this is a 3 book mini series. I definitely recommend these 3books. Ms Jenetta has done it again. Young love, betrayal, twisters and turns.

This was a great trilogy. I liked the overall concept and the world it created. It was such a joy reading all three books and I thought this one was a good ending to Avlyn’s story!

I enjoyed this trilogy. It was very similar to The Enhanced 10-book series that I had just finished. I appreciated it being only 3 books :) I always prefer stories with a female heroine and Avlyn didn’t disappoint.

Comprehensive book with what I think all the birds that could possibly fly or live in Pennsylvania!!!!! I wanted a book to identify the bird that come to my bird garden. I tend to attract a lot of different birds with many building nests on my property. My family and I are always wondering what the name of the birds are so I bought this book since it was specific to bird in PA. The book is color coded by feather color so it is easier to find your bird quickly. I have not used it in the garden yet but have looked up some of the birds that a regulars. The information given on each is very informative and detailed. The book is sized to be a field guide and carried with you on a hike. For me, I would have been happier if it's format would have been larger sized as I do not intend to carry it around, That is why I gave only 4 stars but I would recommend this book to others,

This book is pocket size, can be carried around and is colored coded for quick access in Identifying birds that are in Pennsylvania year round to migrating visitors. The color code helps new birders and seasoned birders this way, for example: if you see a yellow bird, look in the yellow colored coded section, this will give you what yellow birds that are seen in Pennsylvania. Same with brown birds, gray birds, red birds, green birds, white birds, blue birds and more.Color plates of the male/female birds are a plus, and the field notes are very educational.If your a beginning birder or a seasoned veteran, this book is a wonderful asset to any birding library.I have now ordered the CD of bird songs that is a companion to this book, when it comes, I will write a asset review of the CD coordination with the book.Have received the CDs, it is as wonderful as the companion book. This book/CD set is a great way to place the song with the bird you are looking at.This is a must have book/CD set is great for beginning birders as well as for the seasoned birder.I highly recommend this set for those who want to learn "Birding by Ear".A fantastic addition to anyone's library.

This book is set up very well (by main color, then size) and allows you to cross-reference birds easily. I like that it tells you birds that look similar, and what the main differences are so you learn to tell them apart. I had some trouble where I thought a bird was say, mostly brown, but it is listed under the grey, but since it only deals with birds in the area, it's easy enough to flip through the whole book and still quickly identify a bird. There are also interesting facts for each bird listed.This book was recommended by someone who had an earlier version and loved it. I like it better than the national book I've seen, at least for my backyard-birding needs.

This is a perfect gift for any bird watcher. We now have three copies, one indoors (as we watch our feeders for new birds), one in the birding backpack, and one in a ziplock on our patio for Spring through Fall.

Chapter two then introduces a couple of new rules-- interrupts and outside investigation-- which are intended to keep players engaged in the horror aspects of the story and give them a degree of control over the way that events unfold. Finally, the chapter delves into character options, including new complications, equipment, and player archetypes ranging from Power Level 6 to Power Level 12.The third chapter, "Mastering Your Fears," is by far the longest. As with previous chapters, there's a lot of food for thought here, making it anything but a quick or easy read. The first part of this chapter talks about what really defines a horror story-- its common plot elements, its themes, its typical dramatic twists, and the reason that each of these aspects resonates with people. The second part of chapter three coaches Game Masters on how to introduce each of these elements into a roleplaying game, providing storytelling techniques which enhances plot elements discussed in the previous section. Finally, the chapter closes with a discussion of horror protagonists and their role within the horror story. While the first chapter in this book might or might not be useful to every Game Master, this chapter provides a wealth of practical considerations which any GM can put to immediate use."Misadventures in Horror" is the fourth chapter, and it offers a variety of crunchy bits for the Game Master. It opens with a collection of various packages which can be cobbled together on the fly to quickly create new monsters or villains, and of course, it includes a number of classic villain archetypes. If you've ever run Mutants & Masterminds or DC Adventures, you already understand the inherent usefulness of these goodies! The chapter closes with four adventure seeds which have been partially, but not completely, fleshed out.The final chapter, "ARCADE," presents an organization-- the American Research Center for the Arcane Defense of Earth. This was perhaps the least compelling part of the book, in my opinion, as I didn't particularly care for the organization itself or the acronym that it goes by. That said, ARCADE could employ player character 'normals' in a low-PL game, or it could be a resource or asset for player character supers built at the default PL10 level. Enough detail is provided so that ARCADE can be dropped into almost any campaign as-is (including the DC universe, since ARCADE isn't too far off thematically to be a good fit).In passing, I should also mention that the Supernatural Handbook does a slightly better job with the horror genre than the Cosmic Handbook does with aliens and outer space. Both are worth having, but if you're wondering which book to pick up, I'd get this one first.I'm normally the kind of Game Master who looks for crunch when buying game supplements, but this book is mostly fluff-- and that's a great thing! The considerations and advice presented in this book are so specific, and so on-point, that there's something here for everyone. The fact that it includes some really useful crunch for both players and GM's is just icing on the cake. I highly recommend the Supernatural Handbook, and hope you find it to be as useful as I did!

This is a solid book on how to use the Supernatural and Horror elements in your M&M game. It is fairly broad to the books advantage or detriment depending on what you want.

I've liked "Hellboy" since his first appearance in comic books 20 years ago. So, when I purchased this book, a sourcebook for the "Mutants & Masterminds" super hero RPG, I assumed that it would focus on super heroes confronting various horrors, like DC's "Challengers of the Unknown" and Marvel's "Blade" and Dark Horse's "B.P.R.D.," and maybe also on the unique treatment of monsters in comic books over the decades, as in Marvel's "Tomb of Dracula" from the 1970s.To its credit, I suppose, the scope of this sourcebook is actually much more broad. It enumerates and discusses 9 different 'styles' of horror, and discusses how horror is set in several time periods, ranging from 600 AD to the near future. And that's just the first 20 pages of this 128 page book.It's very well written, and clearly presented. But personally, I wasn't interested in anything beyond 'comic book horror,' and had hoped for more on that niche subject. A lot of the interior artwork was also sort of 'photo-realistic grim,' which was not to my personal taste. I preferred the lighter, comic book-y style of the cover.

great add if your into the new M&M and want to do a supernatural setting for your supers or your street level guys. Lots of good info, and very useful.

It's a good source for potential campaign and story ideas

Part of my issue with the Supernatural Handbook is that I read it so quickly after the GM supplement. And the SH is 70 pages smaller, while only $3 less. I imagine that as less GM's would pick this up, they had to charge more, but still disappointing.Still, there is interesting information here for archetypes, styles, time frames and a few small adventures.Lots of information on types of horror you can use in a game.
