Amazing. I wish I could force everyone I personally know (in their twenties or even early thirties) to read this. Get it, read it. Just do it.As a 28 year old this book would have been even more helpful to me 5+ years ago, but alas, such is life. And perhaps as someone a bit older this book is helpful to me in other ways, as I can recognize a lot of things in hindsight. So yes, I think that anyone 17-32 can benefit from this to some degree or another. This book has provided a lot of perspective for me on some of the mistakes I probably could have avoided with love + work, but it's also helped to pin point those mistakes, learn from them, and use it as fuel to move forward in the best way possible. This isn't some spiritual "chicken soup for the soul" book - in fact Meg pushes pretty hard for young people to AVOID those sentiments and not get caught up in the emotional traps that a lot of young adults these days are vulnerable to (from TV, movies, their friends, own parents, etc.)She wants twentysomethings to ask themselves the real tough questions about relationships, jobs, money, education: and then answer them honestly. It's actually all really practical, well thought out advice from a highly skilled therapist/professional in the field. You don't have to relate or even agree with EVERY thing she says, but nonetheless Meg provides perspective that everyone can identify with on some level. The writing is great, too; she does not talk down, come off as condescending, or dismiss anyones concerns: she really gets on the same level as young adults who are struggling.Thank you for this book, Meg.

Best book on preventing the loss of a meaningful life your twenty's. Read it in a day, agreed with the powerful stories and strategies laid out by Dr. Meg Jay to prevent the quarter-life crisis that so many college educated people find themselves trapped in after graduation. Great stories.I've given away a case of these books, and every single person receiving it said it was exactly what they needed to guide them in making major decisions toward a better life. (Many of the twenty-somethings I gave the book to said they HATE to read... which doesn't apply when given the secrets to solving the overwhelming anxiety that comes to those stuck in their twenty's or the caregivers of those who are trapped there).

I read Dr. Meg Jay's NY Times piece on co-habituation (...) which lead me to ordering her book. I received it yesterday and read it in one sitting. So, I think it's pretty good.As a twenty something, I would recommend this book to my friends and even those still in high school. Dr. Jay teaches lessons about how to ideally approach one's twenties and why it really matters. She interweaves research, stories, and counseling sessions with her patients to make a thought provoking but easy book to read. In many of those patients, I saw my friends or myself. There was the twenty something coffee barista still waiting for the right opportunity to come by. There was the beautiful and successful, girl chronically hooking up and never dating because she's still plagued with teenager, self-image problems. There was the bicycle shop guy wanting to be original and afraid of settling down. What they all have in common is this intense desire to know, "Am I going to make it? And what the hell should I be doing in my twenties? School was so easy, but life is so hard."This book isn't a step by step guide. It won't go into how to systematically meet guys/girls, get over depression, or how to do well on an interview. There are plenty of books on getting into the details. Instead, this is a thought provoking book aimed against the popular twenty something zeitgeist today that, "we can do anything", "there's always time", and "I have until 30 to get my life together." Not to mention the million other stories we tell ourselves like, "I'm never going to get good at this", "It's better to wait rather than choose", or "Everyone on Facebook is doing better than me." In a sense, this book is like "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" to personal finance. They are paradigm shifting books that sweep away the false assumptions and beliefs we acquired from our childhood and culture and replace them with solid, real principles on how reality works. This book isn't going to do the heavy lifting for you, only you can do that. This book is the starting point to begin living one's twenties with drive, clarity, and purpose. The book itself is divided into three sections: Work, Love, and The Brain and the Body.Work talks about increasing your identity capital, the value of "weak ties", that you know what you want even though you think you don't, the unhelpful prevalence of Facebook comparisons, and seeing a career as the first step in a unique, customized life versus settling down.Love goes into the importance of taking dating seriously in your 20s, compatibility with possible in-laws, how to make sure "living together" isn't harmful, and choosing the right partner. The Brain and Body is sort of a misc. collection of pieces centered on how your brain, body, and mind works. The Brain and Body section also covered a lot of neuroscience research I wasn't aware of. For example, your brain undergoes a radical period of reconfiguration in your 20s which means now is the best opportunity for learning skills. Or, the frontal cortex that controls a lot of our mature responses such as regulating emotions is still developing for most people in their 20s. Besides the physical brain, Dr. Jay also talks about the mind such as learning how to calm yourself down, how to develop confidence (rather than believing it's fixed), and that you can radically alter how you feel by changing parts of your life.It also has a very frank chapter on fertility and that ladies don't have as much time as they think to have children. The final chapter before the epilogue talks about mapping your years to see how limited your time truly is. It seems common for many young people to talk about getting their career in order or going to graduate school eventually, getting married, and having kids but not all at the same time. Except, when you're 25 or 27 saying this, you're quickly running out of time. It's hard to convey in a review how good the book is. This is the book I wish I could have written in ten years. Not just because of the advice, but because of the patient interviews. I found myself agreeing and sharing the same POV as the patient many times but through the counseling session, it was almost like I was sitting there and seeing my own assumptions fall apart and seeing the truth for what it really is. This book doesn't knock you over the head with what Dr. Jay thinks is right but begins from where you already are and lets you see for yourself the problems in your logic. Just as any good psychologist does. This isn't your run of the mill advice book. There's a lot of popular myths and assumptions that this book dispels with cold, hard truth. I'm a self-help addict, and there was plenty of new information I never heard or thought of before. The underlying message in all the stories and chapters is start living your life now. Take responsibility. Don't believe the lies that your twenties don't matter or that confidence is only innate. For most people, the late night parties, pointless jobs, and random hookups won't be what build your identity, what you care about or remember in the future. If anything, as Billy in the book says, you will probably feel betrayed that you wasted the best years of your life doing all the meaningless things that culture and others mislead you to believe most important. So, start preparing now because the investments (or lack thereof) that you do in your twenties will have the greatest impact in your career, marriage, and overall happiness. As she ends the book, "The future isn't written in the stars. There are no guarantees. So claim your adulthood. Be intentional. Get to work. Pick your family. Do the math. Make your own certainty. Don't be defined by what you didn't know or didn't do. You are deciding your life right now."

I found this book very helpful. I think anyone in their twenties who don't know what they should do with their life should read this book.Dr. Jay does not say that young people in their twenties who don't have a steady job are doing it wrong, or that thinking about a career or love later in life is a bad thing. She merely states (accurately) that all our actions have consequences and if you want a career and children in your thirties that you should start thinking and planning those things in your twenties. She says that your years post-graduation matter and that the executives and experienced professionals in the workplace got there by having years of work behind them. You don't turn thirty and become an experienced professional by magic, it takes work. She also offers solid concrete wisdom on dating, marriage, finding a job, health, hobbies, and the rest. I found her approach not off-putting but motivating. Overall a very useful book.

Leo Steinberg was an art critic who was very well regarde in his field of branching the subjects of Christian art and sexuality. This seems a controversial point but brings to the fore, the topics of Christology, his human-ness and spirit and the nature of thought into depiction of body and soil. Leo Steinberg was truly a visionary and I am so very pleased to have his work to cherish and ponder.

this book remains timely for the student of theology or one who wishes to expand the mind beyond the mundane . The art is beautiful even if the premise is uncomfortable. FPB Ann Arbor

Beautiful book

Exactly as expected

As a visitor enters the nave of the Episcopal church I attend, his gaze is immediately drawn to the stark pentagonal brick wall behind the raised altar, and to the large cross on it with a life-size statue of a crucified Jesus, naked except for the loin cloth about his hips to satisfy the normal decency criteria of the Church. Although we do know that crucifixion victims were stripped of all their clothing, and that the Bible specifically describes the Roman soldiers gambling for Jesus' garments, good taste forbids us to show Jesus naked. Yet there was a time when this was not true. This book examines the Renaissance period (14th to 16th century) when artists presented Jesus either completely naked or covered by a simple loincloth that accentuated a rigidly erect member. Three hundred beautiful plates show this state of undress of both the baby Jesus and of the dying or resurrected Christ. What caused the artists to break the normal decency codes, asks the author, and he advances various theories to answer his own question. The first half of the book was written in 1983 and is divided into two parts: the main analysis and 39 excursuses (appendices to you and me) that amplify various points made. The second half was written thirteen years later and presents the author's newer thoughts plus a detailed refutation of the arguments put forth by his critics. The paintings examined in the book relate to three periods of Jesus' life: his infancy, his baptism, and his crucifixion. Those depicting his infancy show a progressive diminution of worn apparel with passing time: in the 12th century Jesus is shown covered completely by a long philosopher's tunic; in 13th century paintings he appears in short child's dresses; and in the next two centuries he is painted either completely nude, or wearing short, sometimes see-through shifts, that are pulled up by either the baby or his mother to reveal his genitals, while the actions of the surrounding figures direct the viewer's attention to them. Whether it is Mary's mother poking at them (in Hans Baldung Grien's "Holy Family" 1511) or a magus staring at them intently (in Monticello's "Adoration of the Magi," c. 1470), or even the baby himself holding or pointing to them, these treatments of a baby's, let alone baby Jesus' genitals seem to transcend good taste.Steinberg explains it as an effort by the painters to bring to the viewer's attention Jesus' full humanity, and to remind us that as a true Jew he shed his first blood for us during his circumcision. It is, "I, your Creator, have come to share your humanity"; or, "See how I have not delayed to pour out for you the price of my blood." The Magus's almost indecent examination is just an effort to certify the sex or the circumcision status of the child. St Anne's poking, in Grien's woodcut, is explained away as some type of the artist's preoccupation with fecundity and miracle-working spells. The manner in which the adult Jesus was painted relates to the beliefs regarding original sin held by the Eastern Orthodox and the Western Catholic Churches. The Orthodox Church believed that there was no sex in Paradise, and that there never would be. "God did not need marriage to fill the earth," preached St John Chrysostom. The Church maintained that Adam and Eve had been created sexless and it was only after they sinned that they were endowed with procreative organs. The author presents an 11th century Spanish drawing showing Adam acquiring a penis after he sinned. Since Jesus was not subject to the original sin, he resembled the original man having no genitalia. So this is how he was painted in Medieval times (12th and 13th centuries); during his baptism, or on the cross, he was shown naked and sexless. Since there were no sexual organs to give rise to feelings of shame these naked paintings of Jesus could be freely exhibited in and out of church. In later years, the Catholic Church in the West was influenced by St. Augustine's theory of original sin. According to him Adam and Eve were created with all their genitalia intact, but after they sinned God punished them by removing from them conscious control of these organs. Instead of performing the procreative act in a calm and emotionless manner, they were now subject to the vicissitude of their lustful emotions; Adam could no longer control the erection status of his member. (Charitably the author did not mention St. Augustine's sexual history: as a young man in Africa he took a concubine and produced a son; then he turned to his childhood boyfriend Alypius; and finally moved to Rome where, with five other friends, he took a vow of celibacy, upon which his concubine took his son and left.) The question then became, how did this affect Jesus since he was not subject to original sin?Michelangelo's response was "Risen Christ," a work more resembling pagan Greek and Roman works than Christian Church statues, a completely nude Christ holding onto a cross. It seems, however, that Michelangelo was not very interested in this work since he had one of his pupils finish it. Even so, at least seven copies of it were produced during this period, but in all of them Christ was suitably covered. So why did Michelangelo produce such a statue? Before they sinned Adam and Eve had walked naked in the Garden without feeling shame. It was only after they sinned that they became ashamed of their private parts and covered themselves. By this reasoning, since Jesus was without sin he did not need to feel ashamed and cover himself. Most other paintings of the period, however, do not show this much frontal nudity. Although Christ's naked body may be shown removed from the cross, one of his hands is usually placed strategically to prevent exposure. This can be explained, argues Steinberg, by the common belief that a dying man often tends to place his hand on his groin.Perhaps more shocking to the viewer are those paintings where the dead Christ's loincloth clearly shows a massive underlying erection. In the first part of the book, the author advanced various explanations for this practice: in pagan days the phallus was equated with power; in the Egyptian Osiris myth the erection and resurrection motifs were almost combined. But by the time he wrote the second half of his book the author had come up with his Theory of Penile Erection. Since, according to St. Augustine, after the Fall man lost his ability to control this member of his body, what better way for a painter to show that Jesus is unaffected by the original sin than to depict him in control of his erections. And to dissociate it from any sexual involvement, and thus sin, these erections occur either after his death or during his infancy. All in all this is a very interesting book that can be appreciated by even non-artistic types like me. It obviously contains much more that I have space to comment upon. The only thing that I failed to understand was another reviewer's description of breaking up with hilarity while reading it. Perhaps it is because I am neither an artist nor a trained theologian but, with the possible exception of Joos van Cleve's "Holy Family" where Joseph is portrayed reading a book with his spectacles on, I didn't see anything particularly funny in this book.(The writer is the author of "Christianity without Fairy Tales: When Science and Religion Merge.")

Steinberg's book is intriguing. He is much more knowledgable about Catholic theology and hagiography than most Catholics. The many samples of the art work referred to in his book give ample support to his thesis.Be sure to get the second edition which includes responses to the critiques of the first edition. This book is really amazing.

Several art historians of my acquaintance, experts in the period, say that this is the best art history book ever written. I'm not an expert, but I can say that it's terrific, and one of the few academic books that, at first reading, had me lying on my back on the floor with my feet in the air, laughing hysterically. Steinberg had the audacity to wonder, looking at a Renaissance painting, why is it that Jesus's male member is so, well, *prominent*? Instead of averting his eyes (which is what most of us would do) he started looking for other paintings with which to compare it, and lo and behold, he discovered lots of them where indeed the painter seems to be deliberately *accenting* a part of the anatomy which normally one would expect to be concealed. He concludes that the painters were trying to show that the son of God had become Incarnate as a man in the most literal sense. In that sense, what seems scandalous to us is simply a manifestation of Renaissance humanism.Beyond the screamingly funny prose lies a serious argument, about the Renaissance, and the way to do art history. Finally, Steinberg teaches the reader's eye how to look at a painting.

By no means a leisurely read.... I bought this for a class and it was a decent textbook. Nothing spectacular, but it was informative.

Amazon.com Review

Did you know that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had an older sister who was another musical genius? Musicologists even speculate that some compositions attributed to Mozart were actually the work of his sister. Nannerl Mozart is just one example of how women and their accomplishments have been ignored or erased entirely from world history. This important book seeks to amend that gaping absence in history books and popular culture by acknowledging the countless women whose contributions have made a difference to modern society. Arranged chronologically, Herstory offers compelling biographies of 120 women from "The Dawn" (prehistory to 1750) to "Revolution to Revolution" (1750-1850) to "The Global Community" (1890 to the present). The famous, not-so-famous, and infamous are here, including Cleopatra, Sacajawea, Qui Jin, and Golda Meir. Showcasing women's achievements in the arts, politics, science, and medicine--and with an inspiring forward by Gloria Steinem--this book serves up a healthy portion of education, enlightenment, and enjoyment, and should be an essential reference for young women and young men alike. I bought this for me teenage daughter and we both love this. The format makes it easy to pick up, read a few entries, and put it down. My daughter will often read it while eating breakfast before school. My teenage son will often pick it up while he eats breakfast once my daughter leaves the table. Very informative and a great way to start conversations with my kids about women in history, social norms and how they change, and gender roles in societies. Lots of great conversations were a result of this book.

A great book about some of the women who contributed greatly to the history of the world. Some are well-known, while others are finally getting their due. While not in-depth, one gets an overall picture of each woman presented. All students of history - particularly girls and women - should check this book out!

Includes women I knew, and some I did not.

This is a great series of short biographies. I was looking for something to supplement my children's all-male history course, and this is perfect. It has a wide variety of women from all parts of the world and is written in a kid friendly way. The only thing I would improve is to have the dates, what they were famous for, and the country they come from in the Table of Contents for easier reference.

I like how it focuses on women's accomplishments and how they were such pioneers paving the way for strong minded talented women to come in the future. It's very inspirational.

Great book!

Loved this book. Nice little bios of lots of rad women.a lot id never heard of before.

Love it.

When I first started getting into photography, I bought Bryan Peterson's most famous book, Understanding Exposure, and found that while I learned that some of the information in it wasn't the best, overall it really helped me when I was starting out.So, when I started to really get into flash photography, I tried this book also written by Bryan Peterson. Big mistake. Unlike Understanding Exposure, this one does not give good information at all. In fact, balancing flash with ambient, which I feel is the single most important aspect when learning flash, is not touched on at all!! Likewise, he says not to use gels. I'm sorry, but my flash is not the same color temperature as tungsten or florescent bulbs, so color correcting gels are needed, at minimum. This is without getting into the other uses of gels.I am also not a fan of Peterson completely shunning ETTL and other forms of automatic flash. Yes, in a studio setting it is best to shoot manual for best results, we get that. However, when you're on the go and are constantly moving around while taking shots using flash, ETTL comes in handy IF you know how to use it properly. Sadly, the book totally misses the mark here in what could have been a wealth of information. As you probably have heard, a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, in this book, the photos are often poor and it appears that most if not all of them are shot with flashes with no modifiers of any kind on them. This is yet another area of flash photography this book seems to totally miss the mark on.In conclusion, I was extremely disappointed with this book. Thankfully, there are other books and resources online that can help a beginning strobist.

Background (read: bias): Shoot landscapes & macro, and mostly outdoors, but in the early stages of learning flash photography.More than anything, it put a burning desire to go out & shoot, so I can see what works. Though the author didn't mention his Exposure Solutions book, this book gave me the urge to buy it ... and it was more interesting than this one. Definitely a useful book for outdoor flash user. Finally understand 'Rear Curtain Sync', and not only am I not intimidated by flash usage, but avoid that crutch called TTL flash. The author repeatedly drives home using manual over TTL flash.Tempted to take a star off for the author's instance of chimping. Chimping bad, using a light meter good.

While apparently geared towards digital technology, it really feels like a book about film photography with digital as an afterthought.Fortunately, that is a small flaw in an otherwise educating book on flash. First, the concepts here don't pertain a whole lot to the camera anyway and the concepts of exposure and flash settings are the same no matter what camera you use. The bigger problem comes with regard to manual flash and the behaviors observed on today's cameras. Today's flashes don't necessarily have all the manual behaviors this book talks about. In today's automated world, the manual modes on a flash still assume the user is dumb and don't give you nearly the flexibility that the author assumes you'll have here. This really isn't a flaw with the book as it is a flaw with the companies building our flashes and cameras. Unfortunately, I feel that the author should account for that to some extent.I do love that the book at least goes over the concepts very clearly. The focus is on using your flash in manual mode, and that is useful even if it is difficult to implement with your own flash. It took me three days of reading my flash's manual and internet forums to get to a point where I could make the book work for me (again a flaw of my flash and its manual). Once I got to that point, I find that everything in this book is spot on. The concepts are useful. I especially like the discussion on essentially removing the ambient light from your photos.I do question a little bit of the books organization. The discussion on power and guide numbers would have simplified the challenges I faced at the beginning if they would have been placed at the beginning of the book. The author calls the concepts advanced, but I think that Guide Numbers are essential to understand flash from the start.Last, going back to digital vs. film. In the limited discussion on automatic flash settings, the author discusses TTL, which really doesn't exist anymore as the author describes. I don't think it is a big deal as the current iteration on TTL tends to work well enough as described in digital, but it does have its limits. The author does acknowledge that todays dSLRs have better capability in low light and gives examples of when flash shouldn't be used. As a user who tended to be scared of flash, I was aware of these abilities, but it can be just as easy for many users to use a flash for everything. I can't believe how often I see flashes at baseball games. The author does a good job of also showing how a flash can be used in situations where it may not be technically necessary but can hugely improve a photo. The other item I question is the emphasis on items such as gels to color flash. My intuition is that there is value in the discussions, but the use isn't as necessary as it was during the film era. For one, digital editing allows us to shift the color of our images. Unchanged flash in combination with photo editing seems like it offers the most flexibility.Ultimately, I give this book 4 stars because it feels like it could use just a bit more updating for its time (a book in 2011 needs a bit more digital emphasis). Never-the-less as a reference on Flash photography, it is a great starting point. As in any book on photography and in any learning of techniques, I suggest supplementing it with internet forums, blogs, etc. I also suggest reading up on your own camera's flash as well as possible.Last, I wouldn't hesitate in buying an old flash (with care to ensure compatibility with your camera and its electric circuits). I picked up an old Pentax flash for my Pentax camera and found the concepts and use a lot easier to follow. It doesn't have to be the most powerful flash, but it will help to understand the concepts so that the use of your primary flash is much easier.Have fun... This book has made flash photography a joy for me. Before I always felt it was a chore. That is worth the price alone.

Very informative book with many details. I personally don't like the professional approach of Brian. As many photographers he prefers to set the ISO to 200 and flash to a manual mode. I actually buy those expensive cameras or flashes to use them as advertised. Use High ISO and TTL flash per example. I know I can switch to manually controlled settings, use sunny rule for camera and 1/4 power for flash. But those settings I used 20 years ago already. During the last 20 years was tremendous development of computers in cameras and flashes. Some people don't accept this and still use the sunny rule for the exposure. Maybe we need another book like Understanding Computers.

Book has detailed information and pictures to back up claims. I believe chelation will eventually be adopted for main stream medical practice to prevent and/or help reverse diabetes as well as arteriosclerosis. Double blind studies are being done right now.

If you want to understand heavy metals and your body this book will explain it. Not written in doctors terminology bit simple enough for the average person to understand. It is in depth yet simple.

Outdated and dangerous methods per current Toxicologist I saw. But there is some useful info to read. Not enough info on current types of metal exposure from orthopedic implants.

very interesting read. I've learned a lot reading this book. I shared this book with my daughter. thanks for the great price.

great

Great

This is an excellent book about this subject - as far as it goes. But what is presented as a marvelous "new" method of healing one's body has some inherent problems not noted in this book: chelation will eliminate not only those minerals that are causing trouble but also all the others as well! You are then faced with replacing the lost minerals in some way without causing even further difficulties. That may sound fairly simple, but in fact it is not. That is the primary reason for going slowly rather than hitting your body with all the stops out.I do thoroughly recommend using chelation in those cases where it is clearly necessary, but again, go slowly and remember that replacement is absolutely required. Be very certain that your doctor is well grounded in the subject and has had adequate experience to handle your case successfully.

I was looking for protocols. Not in this book. General information was okay. More information is probably available at ACAM.

#625,195 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I had earlier reviewed the U. S. Navy manual "Poisonous Snakes of the World" (1965) and was pleased to find this modern (2012) update. Scott Shupe has corrected the various Latin names, based on modern taxonomic studies, and the illustrations have been much improved and expanded. The number of known venomous snakes (he also corrects "poisonous" to "venomous") has more than tripled, from 175 to 600, with most at least listed and a large number described. Range maps are included for most important species, a much needed improvement. Finally, a very much needed revision of first aid techniques was added. In reality this is not simply a revision, but a wholly re-written text.I found one typo on page 304. The photograph there is not of a cottonmouth but of a Sahara sand viper. Obviously this is just a mislabel and I have not as yet found any other problems. While this book is not a complete reference it is a relatively cheap review of the subject in a handy size and should serve its intended audience of service men and women, and travelers well.

If you are a fan of venomous snakes, this book is one of the best overall references on the subject that I have seen. The information is both detailed and accessible which can be difficult to find in reference books. Many books like this either have pictures with little description or read like a biology textbook. In my opinion, this book has the best of both worlds: lots of pictures of common/rare snakes, habitat descriptions, and a breakdown of venom type and available antivenoms. I have owned a lot of snake books in my life and this is one of the best.

I was greatly impressed by the quality of the color photos of the various specimens and the detailed descriptions of the reptiles, their habitats and their behavioral traits.

I used the original text extensively when I did my thesis work on the medical management of snake bite and envenomation. Grateful for this beautiful new update! This reference is a must-have for Herpetologists and for scientists and physicians interested in snake venom and envenomation.

Great book for the hobby herpetologist. A lot of information. If you're looking for great pictures and a more entertaining (but less complete) read, look at Mark O'Shea's Snakes Of The World instead. But if you want a pretty extensive reference book, this is the one to get.

I gave this book as a gift the person who received it Said he really enjoyed the book... He works for animal control

Excellent book. Well researched. Excellent photos. A fascinating book for those interested in slither y things.

Working from Within: The Nature and Development of Quine's Naturalism, by Sander Verhaegh

Review

"This outstanding book combines a splendid overview of Quine's naturalism with a mastery of his archive. We get to see the ideas of Word and Object emerge and learn what mattered most to Quine in writing it. ... Verhaegh's book is indispensable." -- Richard Creath, President's Professor of Philosophy, Arizona State University"A deeply informative and historically grounded guide to Quine's naturalism. By reconstructing the evolution of Quine's writing of Word and Object over a period of nearly twenty years (and providing a scholarly guide to the Quine archives), Verhaegh shows how Quine's numerous manuscripts and correspondence reveal the most important and difficult philosophical juncture points Quine had to face in writing his first major philosophical book. In the twists and turns of Quine's own struggles with articulating his philosophical thoughts, Verhaegh shows us much of the true depth, dynamism, and sophistication of Quine's thought." -- Juliet Floyd, Professor of Philosophy, Boston University"This is an outstanding work. I agree with the main points, am grateful for them, and heartily applaud the sheer amount of work that has gone into it, philosophical as well as scholarly. I learned. Every Quine-scholar will have to read it and many students would be well-advised to read it also." -- Gary Kemp, Senior Lecturer of Philosophy, University of Glasgow
