Review

With its short, vibrant chapters and clear, gentle prose, this triumphant and necessary book conjures the enchantments of childhood without shying away from the fraught realities of abandonment, abuse and neglect…Twirling a baton requires flair and confidence, in addition to an understanding that the baton is always balanced just a tiny bit off-center. There is something wonderfully off-balance, too, about ¬DiCamillo’s storytelling. It allows her characters to sparkle and soar. DiCamillo has called this novel, based partly on her own fatherless Florida childhood, "the absolutely true story of my heart." What a beautiful and generous heart it is. —The New York Times Book Review As in her previous award-winning books, DiCamillo once again shows that life’s underlying sadnesses can also be studded with hope and humor, and does it in a way so true that children will understand it in their bones. And that’s why she’s Kate the Great. —Booklist (starred review) DiCamillo's third-person narrative is written in simple words, few exceeding three syllables, yet somehow such modest prose carries the weight of deep meditations on life, death, the soul, friendship, and the meaning of life without ever seeming heavy, and there's even a miracle to boot. Readers will approach the tense and dramatic conclusion and realize how much each word matters. Raymie may not find answers to why the world exists or how the world works, but she can hold onto friends and begin to see more clearly the world as it is...Once again, DiCamillo demonstrates the power of simple words in a beautiful and wise tale. —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) With extraordinary skill, two-time Newbery Medalist DiCamillo traces the girls’ growing trust in each other while using understated confessionals and subtly expressed yearnings to show how tragedies have affected each of them. The book culminates with a daring cat-rescue mission: fraught with adventure, danger, and a miracle or two, the escapade reveals how love and compassion can overcome even the highest hurdles. —Publishers Weekly (starred review) The girls don’t form an immediate bond, but their initial association of convenience eventually turns into a friendship of understanding and fierce loyalty. After christening the trio the Three Rancheros, Louisiana delivers these prescient words: “We’ll rescue each other.” And in a beautifully layered set of adventures, they do. The limited third-person narration gives Raymie her distinctive voice and spot-on pre-adolescent perspective of a young girl trying to make sense of the world around her. Here DiCamillo returns—triumphantly—to her Winn-Dixie roots. —The Horn Book (starred review) In short, precisely crafted chapters, DiCamillo once again demonstrates her ability to create unique characters that touch readers’ hearts. Raymie, in particular, is observant, thoughtful, and sensitive as she struggles to make sense of the world around her. Her story unfolds in uncomplicated prose, even as the themes explored are complex. Surrounded by the fully realized Louisiana and Beverly, not to mention the adults in her town, Raymie searches for meaning, a search that will resonate with readers. Poignant, insightful, and ultimately uplifting. —School Library Journal (starred review) From start to finish, Raymie feels her soul alternately shrinking and expanding like an indecisive balloon as she and her new entourage navigate the waters of friendship and heartbreak, love and loss, life and death. Most of the characters in this fine, funny, meticulously crafted novel live life "wishing for things that are gone," but there's certainly no chance that Raymie's lovely and large soul will ever completely shrivel with a "Phhhhtttt." —Shelf Awareness (starred review) Although this story is fictional, DiCamillo describes it as the true story of her heart...DiCamillo does a wonderful job of allowing readers into the depths of Raymie’s feelings and even into her soul. By the end of the book, readers feel like Raymie, Beverly, and Louisiana are true and lasting friends of their own. It is truly a heart-filled and heartfelt book. —VOYA Fans will recognize DiCamillo's unique wry voice as it gives readers vivid images, dizzying ideas, humor, heart-wrenching emotions, and gorgeous, gorgeous language. You all have something to look forward to this April, I promise. —Huffington Post DiCamillo writes with her usual easygoing delicacy; the portray- als of the girls are swift, telling, and gentle, with elliptical hints at Beverly’s and especially Louisiana’s homelife challenges (lack of money clearly limits Louisiana’s diet)...While DiCamillo fans will certainly enjoy reading this on their own, it’s also excellent classroom material, encouraging kids to stretch their decoding—and also to realize that even if you don’t get the outcome you want, it’s still possible to find closure. —Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books It’s an inspired choice, for surely this coming-of-age story is a fairy tale for our times. The young damsels in distress test their courage and rescue one another; and the book closes not with a conventional “happily ever after” but with a shared vision of the world as vast and yet intimately connected. —Washington Post DiCamillo, who has just ended her tenure as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, understands that children can handle the tough stuff in fiction–after all, they have to handle problems like divorce, grief, abuse and poverty in real life. And a book like this can help. As Raymie’s neighbor told her before dying, “If you were in a hole that was deep enough and if it was daylight and you looked up at the sky from the very deep hole, you could see stars even though it was the middle of the day.” For children looking up from their own deep holes, the Three Rancheros could be those stars. —TIME Magazine Kate DiCamillo seems always to write with an understanding heart and a gentle archness of tone...As the summer progresses, the girls find poignant points of commonality and a surprising comradeship in this wistful, tender, funny novel for readers ages 10 and older. —The Wall Street Journal Raymie Nightingale is filled with humor, poignancy, and life-sized lessons. It is predictably unpredictable: a hallmark of DiCamillo’s brilliant writing. —New York Journal of Books …though this book is awash in personal tragedies, it’s not a downer. It’s tightly written and full of droll lines and, yes I admit it. It’s meaningful. But the meaning you cull from this book is going to be different for every single reader. Whip smart and infinitely readable, this is DiCamillo at her best. —A Fuse #8 Production (blog) "Raymie" is fast and fleet — a crystalline ode to childhood friendship that shines as brightly as anything that DiCamillo has written. —Chicago Tribune DiCamillo...wryly captures the adventure and confusion of childhood with a gut-wrenching lack of sentimentality and a razor-sharp wit. —Star Tribune Kate DiCamillo shines once again with her latest somewhat autobiographical children’s novel...Their adventures are fraught with conflict and humor, as they try to do good deeds, rescue animals, and even participate in some breaking and entering. Through their zany antics they realize some things are more important than winning a contest, and Raymie discovers happiness and friendship can exist despite unpleasant realities of life. —School Library Connection Kate DiCamillo is the author whose books I anticipate with the most delight. I read them over and over. In simple but elegant prose, with grace and great humor, she writes truthfully about the human experience but always with hope. Raymie Nightingale is beautiful, a celebration of life, as are all her books. —Dean Koontz, bestselling author Newbery winner DiCamillo at her best. —People “Modest” and “tour de force” don’t usually go together, but they perfectly describe this quirky but melancholy coming-of-age novel. —San Francisco Chronicle "Raymie Nightingale" is striking for its portrait of 10-year-old Raymie Clarke, who hopes to win the contest and push her father, who has abandoned the family, to come home. —Orlando Sentinel While Raymie Nightingale is written for a middle-grade audience, it is a moving novel that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. —Providence Journal It is an expertly layered and beautifully crafted story with not a wasted word or moment. The characters are living, breathing humans in whose struggles the reader becomes invested. And it’s a novel that shimmers with hope at its close, even if that absent father never actually pulls through. —Kirkus Reviews (blog) Readers will once again be treated with a novel that is rich and important on multiple levels by the exceptional writer Kate DiCamillo. —Books to Borrow...Books to Buy (Kendal A. Rautzhan column) Everyone should read Raymie Nightingale by Kate DiCamillo. It’s a classic tale of friendship, which we can all relate to. —On Our Minds (Scholastic blog) DiCamillo's original, loveable characters bring with them a hint of magic and an abundance of humanity and humor. —News-Gazette Two-time Newbery Award-winning author Kate DiCamillo has crafted a unique and deeply appealing character in Raymie, and young readers will love watching her finally find a degree of peace. —A Mighty Girl (blog) Kate DiCamillo featured promoting summer reading —Panorama Magazine

Hard to decided what age would like this. Some of the hardships and losses are pretty intense for a 3rd grader yet the book reads as appropriate for that age.... I was going to give it to my niece for Christmas, but I don’t think it has enough resolution or value. I am a huge fan of this author, adore Magician’s Elephant and Edward Tulane. This one is just not quite right. I am a reading specialist grades K-6.

You know when you've been waiting for a book so long, you worry if it can possibly meet your expectations. Well, this gem sure did! Kate DiCamillo has a way of breathing life into characters that makes you want to wrap your arms around them. In this story we meet 3 girls with complicated lives who find that together they can face their worst fears. As "the Rancheros" they help each other in their quests to win back what they've lost. You will want to read this book! And you will probably want to read it again!

Kate DiCamillo is a very talented author, so it was no surprise when this book was hard to put down. Three girls in the summer of 1975, become friends due to each one of them having the desire to be a part of the same pageant in some way. All three have different backgrounds with a similar sense of loss. This book is an adventure of friendship, love, loss, sadness , happiness, life's lessons, life's questions, and much more. It was an excellent book, and I highly recommend it!!!!

Kate DiCamillo earned her honor as one of America's top writers for middle school readers with this book. Itis a departure from her typical writing but definitely a high interest book. Have you ever wished for the returnof a relative that you would do anything to gain their attention. Follow these three girls on their adventure asthey grow closer and develop a greater understanding of what it means to be a supportive friend.

Ms. DiCamillo writes with such warmth and charm. This is a lovely summer read for you and your children. It doesn't have t he darkness and depth of a couple of her other books, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth the afternoon it will take to read it!

I love this writer, but was disappointed in this book. The quirky characters were a little too quirky and some of the plotting seems haphazard. I'm a huge fan of Because of Winn Dixie and so are my students. Rayme will definitely be on my classroom shelf this fall, but I won't do it as a read aloud, mostly because selfishly, I don't really want to read it again.

Very much enjoyed this book. You got to know the characters you can see them as the author breathes life into them. Although the start was slow because faster and faster as you wondered how life is to work out for the young girls in the book. The audible addition is also quite fantastic.

Kate DiCamillo continues to show her diversity with her writing. This characters in this 70's tale ring true as children of the era who weren't as closely monitored and scheduled as are many modern children. Left to their own devices, the three girls have their own adventures as they develop friendships and experience several hard realities of adulthood. Once again, Ms. DiCamillo show readers how to negotiate a difficult world while learning to improve it.

This hymnal contains 619 hymns, plus 34 "musical aids" which include benediction responses and amens. The layout is very practical and readable. I have the utmost admiration for the Mennonites' practical, no-nonsense mentality. The hymnal is presented as it is, with no pretense, no putting-on of airs .. and yet musically it is far superior to (and more USEFUL than) other hymnals I own which have a more sanctimonious attitude.I was surprised to receive the shape-note edition since I did not specifically request it. I didn't even know it was available, or that anybody still published shape-note hymnals. The shape notes remind me of my childhood, attending the old-time Church of Christ in central Kentucky. The editors mention in the introduction that the hymns have all been arranged for singing in four-part harmony, _often unaccompanied_, which I have not heard a congregation do since my great-grandmother died. This is a hymnal for people who really SING!The selection of music is wonderfully eclectic. Hymns have been culled from nearly the entire range of Christian musical history. There is a high proportion of grand old German hymns .. and the music has not been simplified or "dumbed down" to make it easier to sing. Just one example: "A Mighty Fortress" is presented with the original syncopated rhythm as written by Martin Luther. Everywhere else I have encountered that hymn, it has been homogenized into an even, square rhythm. There are also lots of elaborate harmonizations by Bach.. great stuff. Not all of the music is classical and fancy. The hymnal contains a smattering of modern material (original publication date 1969) and plenty of "old standard" favorites that are indispensable to any Protestant hymnal. There's a section of the book devoted entirely to Gospel songs, and at the end just before the "musical aids to worship" there is a section of 24 "choral hymns" which the editors describe as "more difficult" and recommend for choirs (though still usable for congregational singing if desired.) In terms of musical complexity these hymns are insane! But they are still set in 4-part harmony with the serious expectation that some congregations might sing them. I have to respect that kind of confidence.Flipping through this hymnal always makes me smile .. and I often wish I went to a church where people DID sing such challenging material. It's great stuff. I highly recommend this hymnal for church musicians of any denomination. You will find something in there to like.

very happy

Great.

We were very satisfied with the entire purchase, including shipping time. Thanks. They were just what we hoped for and in very good condition. Thanks

wonderful hymns . great to have them all in one lovely book.

I got this for my mother in law because she wanted a book of the hymns she sang growing up Mennonite. she was pleased with it.

This Hymnal is a treasure to me. It has a variety of hymns, including many German hymns (many translated by Catherine Winkworth), English hymns, (including some with music by Ralph Vaughn Williams), and a select number of gospel hymns. The arrangements are always beautiful. I love the many songs which I have found only in this hymnal.

Review

National Bestseller"Doyle is an engaging and gifted storyteller who has penned a laugh-out-loud, insightful, heartwarming and enjoyable tale of his first journey across Canada. . . . His curiosity and enthusiasm to explore the country is contagious, and allows us to see snippets of Canada through his eyes almost as though we were seeing it ourselves for the first time. . . . Uplifting, funny and hard to put down, A Newfoundlander in Canada is like a whiff of fresh ocean air." —Winnipeg Free Press"A fun step-by-step trip from tightly packed tiny taverns to concerts for thousands and all the bumpy road gigs in-between." —Vancouver Sun"This peppy memoir of a life on the road and at home finds Alan Doyle, singer-songwriter and erstwhile front man for Great Big Sea, in fine form. . . . Doyle has an eye for details, an ear for a good story and a well-honed ability to play out a yarn of his own. . . . He is deft enough to bring a light and comedic touch to the telling [of his stories]." —Atlantic Books"Newfoundland's streets and highways are as random and surprising as the man himself. Maybe his routes are his roots. What amazes me, is for all he has seen and done, Alan Doyle has never put another human being down. You won't be able to put him down either. You will get lost on his account. Lost on a brilliant journey in a remarkable book." —Ron MacLean, host of Hockey Night in Canada  "A laugh-riot kitchen party on wheels that will make you fall in love with Canada all over again. Alan Doyle's heart is as big as his talent." —Denise Donlon, media executive and author of Fearless as Possible (Under the Circumstances)  "Doyle's effortless storytelling will have you on his side from the first page. He writes like he sings: with a sincerity and a love of life that is infectious. As you read this book, you’ll fall in love with Canada for the first time again, even if you've lived here all your life. A Newfoundlander in Canada is like the country itself—much bigger than you first realize and filled to the brim with optimism, laughter, and wide-eyed wonder. As we say in Newfoundland, 'it's wicked.'" —Mark Critch, comedian and cast member on This Hour Has 22 MinutesPraise for Where I Belong: • "Excellent adventure. I feel like I've lived another's life." —Russell Crowe, actor/musician • "As Great Big Sea's frontman, Alan Doyle is exuberant, irreverent, hilariously funny and a heart-on-the-sleeve Newfoundlander. As a writer, he's all that and a bag of chips. Doyle's description of growing up on the hills and wharves of old world Petty Harbour is intimate, saucy and note-perfect. In his own words: Deadly." —Michael Crummey, award-winning author of Galore  • "Alternately laugh-out-loud funny, tearfully nostalgic and stunningly beautiful, the stories in Where I Belong have nothing to do with the famous and everything to do with the legendary. . . . The beating heart of life itself runs through this book." —Huffington Post

I've been to Newfoundland 5 times Labrador 3 and I'd recommend a trip to either as long as you're not expecting Disneyland or some other tourist stunt. On one of the trips we encountered a Great Big Sea cassette and have been following the group ever since and Alan Doyle since the group broke up. We've seen all the shows here in Chicago where we live which is probably at least 10. Anyway this book is hilarious especially in the Kindle version up to section 898 which had me laughing until there tears started. The rest of the book is pretty good too. You can learn a lot about the Canadian prairie provinces but more important the truly wonderful people of Newfoundland both locals and expats. Need a 6th trip and Alan when are you coming back to Chicago. We miss you man

I spent 2 1/2 years living in Argentia, Newfoundland -stationed at the former US Navy base. Although it was at a time well before GBS when Alan was just a lad, the music of his band, the stories bring back so many fond memories of the Rock! You make a friend with a Newfoundlander, you have made a friend for life. This book helps you understand that through the sharing of their true culture through music. I first saw GBS in 2006 in Portland, Maine and twice after and Alan’s band twice as well. I hope there is a third book to talk about their travels to the States and to help us understand the eventual break up of the band. Hoping it is just a hiatus and we will see a reunion tour soon.

I've been a fan of GREAT Big Sea for decades and was sad when they broke up. But now through Alan's eyes I get some insight into a bit of their background and their climb "to the top". And at the same time learned a little about Newfoundland & Petty Harbor. I'd love to visit there one day. Thank you Alan for sharing this story...your music still makes me smile sing & dance!

As a Newfoundlander myself who left the island to work in Canada, all the way from Corner Brook to Calgary with many stops along the way. I have enjoyed his colourful stories of his adventures. He gives a positive take on the trials and tribulations of our integration into Canadian society.Like Alan I am proud to be a Newfie

Who happens to have an outsize musical talent. For those from the States, his discovery and presentation of the diversity of Canadian culture and language is enlightening. His constant cheeriness and optimism in the face of adversity is contagious. I haven’t been to Newfoundland in 30 years but this book makes me want to go back.

I love Great Big Sea, and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story of their beginning on George St. in St.Johns' s, Newfoundland through their first across Canada tour.

Not only is Alan a wonderful musician, but he's a great storyteller. The book follows the beginnings of his career which is told through funny, charming, and genuine stories. It was a great read.

Great and funny reading. Lots of talent of life experience from this man!

Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments (Harvest Original)

From Publishers Weekly

Author Boese (Hippo Eats Dwarf, The Museum of Hoaxes) returns with another look at scientific oddities, this time focusing on unlikely but actual experiments. Included are notorious examples such as the Stanford Prison Experiment and Stanley Milgram's infamous shock treatment obedience experiment, but it's the lesser-known studies that will generate the most interest. Disembodied heads, animal resurrection ("Zombie Kitten," "Franken-Monkey") and the direct stimulation of a subject's emotions (via electric brain prod) are some of the more grim activities Boese describes (though, thankfully, he steers clear of examples from Nazi Germany). Lighter subjects include attempts to prove the myth that the bar patrons become more attractive at closing time and the effects of staying awake for 11 days straight. These and other tales will obviously appeal to armchair scientists, but the short, witty, ceaselessly amusing entries should delight anyone with a healthy sense of morbid curiosity. Elephants on Acid is a collection of some of the most bizarre, curious and plain cruel experiments executed in the name of science. Among them, the LSD induced elephant of the title, Russian two-headed dogs, monkey head transplants, sleep deprivation, monkeys brought up as humans, baby reactions experiments, sexual studies, how to maximize waiters’ tips experiments and missiles guided by pigeons. The book is very informative and does have it’s moments, but the tongue-in-cheek humor did bother me a little, specially when talking about some of the more cruel experiments, to both humans and animals. I do like me some dark humor, but I just couldn’t see the funny side the author was trying to show me.I liked a lot the research and background on the experiments, specially the Victorian studies on electricity and dead bodies, as well as the neurosurgeries and famous psychology studies like the Stanford Prison experiment, that turned normal students into sadistic prison guards. On the other hand, outside of the most interesting and chocking studies, the book seemed to have a lot of filler of uninteresting ones. Ironically, the chapter on sex was so boring I found myself skipping some pages, as I did on the one on babies.Elephants on Acid does deliver on it’s promise as an informal compendium of the strangest side of science – and the horror when moral and empathy is not considered by scientists – but I think it could be improved by concentrating on the truly bizarre and toning down the internet-like humor.

This is an interesting read to say the least. If you've ever wondered how far some fringe scientists have gone in the past this is the book to start with. Let me just say, you really won't believe some of the stuff you read here, but according to the author, Alex Boese, a graduate of Amherst College with a Master's Degree in the History of Science from the University of California, San Diego, it's all true. Considering his field of study, he should know. One of the bits I found most amazing was the experiment with a cat which actually succeeded in capturing visual information (real moving images!) from the cat's visual processing center of the brain. Another is The Isolated Head of a Dog. Completely inhumane, but an incredible tale nonetheless. The author's writing style is such that we read the information, acknowledge disgust, but are still entertained and happily move on to the next potential atrocity of scientific experimentation.Elephants on Acid and Other Bizarre Experiments, is a remarkably entertaining and educational book. Some subject matter may not be suitable for all audiences. You have been warned!

It never fails to amaze me what scientists can come up with. At times gross, at times funny, I loved this book enough to pass it on to my neice.. After she had finished reading it we went out to dinner with my sister (her mother) who had not read the book. We spent so much time discussing the book my sister got annoyed with both of us. We certainly didn't intend to leave her out of the conversation it was just that there was so much that was interesting in this book that we couldn't stop ourselves.

A bunch of short stories that don't contain a lot of details and leave you wanting more information. I didn't intend to purchase this book and have to purchase more books to find out the entire story. The book doesn't have a lot of flow, it makes for a "choppy" read.

I think this book would be a great addition to the library of any science teacher or professor. Reading a story from the book could spark some lively discussion about the scientific method, scientific ethics, and the pursuit of knowledge. I think the reviewer who complained that this book promotes animal cruelty misses the point. The author isn't advocating the type of bizarre experiments he chronicles, he's merely reporting them. There are some experiments in here that are classics like Pavlov's experiment on conditioned response or the Milgram experiment on the psychology of obedience. There's also a part of the book about flatulence that I'm sure adolescent males will love.

I was required to buy this book for my biology class. It was actually a pretty interesting book. All the experiments were really cool to read about.

If you like to read about wacky scientific experiments (that we'd never get away with today), this is for you. Fascinating!

Short but interesting book.

Knopf MapGuides come in all major cities and I purchase the guide for each city I visit. It is very helpful when traveling. The book breaks down the city into sections with a map for each section and the important sites to see in that section. It also shows you where there are places to eat and shop. The book is small enough to keep in your pocket book.

These are my favorite guidebooks. I have them for several cities.

I purchased this Berlin MapGuide after checking it out from the library. I thought it was going to be a handy reference guide, but we barely used it. We relied on the transit maps.

I carried this book with me every where I went in Amsterdam. The maps could use a bit more detail, but I really liked it all around. I found it very useful and it saved my friends and I from getting too lost several times.

Fast shipping; item exactly as described.

We used this book while visiting Amsterdam and found it very helpful. It gave us good information and was easy to use. The fold out maps were an extra nice way to keep our daily "walking about" organized. We've used other of these booklets and have enjoyed them all.

God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction by Dan Barker and Richard Dawkins“God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction” is an expose of “God’s” true qualities based on the very book that attempts to describe “Him”. Taking a page from Richard Dawkins, former evangelist minister and co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, Dan Barker takes the readers on a journey through the Bible and during this trip he clearly describes the “Lord Jealous”. This provocative 322-page book includes twenty-eight chapters broken out by two parts: Part 1. Dawkins Was Right and Part II. Dawkins Was Too Kind.Positives:1. Well-researched, well-written book. Barker takes glee in exposing the character of “God”.2. The fascinating topic of the characterization of “God” through analyzing the Bible. “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”3. The chapters are broken out by character traits. Each chapter begins with a biblical appropriate passage. “A jealous and avenging God is the Lord, the Lord is avenging and wrathful.” —Nahum 1:2”4. Barker knows the Bible with mastery and provides countless biblical passages that clearly supports his main points. “He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.” (Genesis 22:2)”5. So many biblical passages that will make your head spin. “Leviticus 19:28 “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.”6. Traits of an unjust “God”. “Exodus 22:18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.””7. The concept of hell. “The concept of eternal Hell, a truly infinite lack of forgiveness, does not occur until the New Testament, thanks to Jesus.”8. Many examples of “God’s” Type-A micromanagement.9. Traits of a vindictive “God”. “Deuteronomy 32:35 “The Lord says, … ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’””10. The bloodthirsty lord. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you for making atonement for your lives on the altar; for, as life, it is the blood that makes atonement. (Leviticus 17:11)”11. Threatening nonbelievers, so cruel. “2 Chronicles 15:13 “All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.””12. Ethnic cleanser of biblical proportions. “Go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. (1 Samuel 15:3)”13. Misogyny and plenty of it. “Deuteronomy 22:28–29 “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.” RSV (You broke it, you buy it.)”14. So anti-gay. “Leviticus 20:13 “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.””15. The Bible endorses slavery, how terrible. “Leviticus 25:44–46 “As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round about you. You may also buy from among the strangers [NRSV: “aliens”] who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property.””16. Examples of infanticide. “O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us! Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock! (Psalm 137:8–9)”17. Examples of megalomania. ““So I will display my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” —Ezekiel 38:23””18. Examples of malevolence. ““I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” —Isaiah 45:7, KJV”19. Just a plain old bully. “But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go. (Exodus 10:20)”20. Examples of flame-happy “God”. “Leviticus 21:9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.” KJV (Notice that her “crime” is profaning her father.)”21. And so much more.Negatives:1. I wanted more expert commentary from Barker.2. I would have added a section on how the Bible came together and the different versions.3. No notes or links. In summary, I enjoyed this book. It will serve as an excellent reference when I debate my Christian friends. Barker has great command of the topic and even takes glee in exposing what are clearly difficult and realistic characterizations of the biblical “God”. Provocative and what must be difficult for Christians to digest, this is the word of “God”. I recommend it.Further recommendations: “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins, “The Religion Virus” by James A. Craig, “50 Reasons People Give For Believing in a God” by Guy P. Harrison, “The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture” by Darrel W. Ray, “End of Faith” by Sam Harris, “Faith No More: Why People Reject religion” by Phil Zuckerman, “Atheism Advanced” by David Eller, “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” by J. Anderson Thomson Jr., “The Believing Brain” by Michael Shermer, and “Why I Became An Atheist” by John W. Loftus.

Great book, really shows the dark side of the "kind and loving god" we are all taught to believe in. I was a Christian for many years and never read the chapters and verses cited in this book. Anyone who calls themselves a Christian should read this book and prepare to defend their faith in light of what it reveals about the god they worship. Note that everything in this book is taken directly from the Bible, these are god's words in context, commands given to his loyal followers. They cannot be misconstrued or taken as metaphor. The book makes it abundantly clear that these orders were to be carried out and failure to do so meant death. I'm sure there will be negative reviews from Christians who have never read the book. Just the title alone will cause some folks to get angry. But if you haven't read it then go to the source. Read your own holy text. Any god who not only condones but orders his followers to commit rape, slavery, child sacrifice, murder, and genocide among other horrific acts is not worthy of my or anyone else's devotion, but in fact deserves our utter contempt, if he were in fact real. If pastors and priests were honest why do they not deliver sermons on the darker aspects of god. The god who made a man sacrifice his daughter to win a battle, or how after conquering a city everyone was killed except the young girls who were given to the Israelite soldiers to "do with what they wished". All on the direct orders of god. This book is well written, well researched and only reinforced my religious views. Even though it starts from the premise that god is fictional, it treats the god character as though he were real (in the context of the book) and that this god really did all of those terrible things. Each chapter is devoted to one of the aspects of god that Richard Dawkins described in his book "The God Delusion". There are chapters on how god is jealous, petty, genocidal, misogynistic, cannibalistic, etc all backed up by scripture. Indeed if you were to write a fictional book today that incorporated all of the negative aspects of god into one villain it would be ludicrous, laughable even. But the Holy Bible does just that, and these horrifying aspects of god are tucked away like dark alleyways in a bad part of town, never discussed crossed by quickly hoping not to be noticed. Dan Barker does a masterful job of hunting down these alleyways and shining a bright light on things rarely spoken of and never addressed from any pulpit.Even if you do not buy this book I implore you to grab your handy bible and starting at the beginning read it, I mean really read it, and think of the character of this supposed omnipotent, omniscient being, then look around you at the world and ask yourself "does what I see and understand about the universe match up with the collected stories of a small isolated group of Bronze Age nomadic sheepherders". And why out of all the people living all over the planet, some with vastly greater influence and power, why was this tiny isolated relatively powerless tribe chosen? As you continue to read ask yourself "does this make sense"? On your journey if you happen to buy this book things may become just that much more clear. Use those powers of reason and critical thinking that we all were born with take a small step out of your comfort zone.

I was not expecting a book solely devoted to quoting bible verses. It got kind of boring after awhile. BUT, It DID give me fodder to use against creationists during public or private discourse, so in that sense, I LIKED it!.

Dan Barker makes extensive use of bible passages to show that the God of the old and new testaments is not love. He is part abusive parent part sadistic dictator and complete monster. I don't understand how the bible can be held in high regard when it contains many stories praising religious terrorism, sex trafficking, misogyny, xenophobia, child sacrifice, etc. it's all supposedly OK because God ordered it. The 9/11 highjackers used the same excuse.

When I began in-depth bible study of the Old Testament, my Christian faith started to seriously suffer. I was taking Bible college courses and was horrified with what I found in the Old Testament. Then on deeper reflection it became obvious that the New Testament really wasn’t any better. I asked questions of the instructors regarding the cruelty and violence of the Bible, and all I received were bleached out answers. So I left my faith many years back. I recently read this book, along with R Dawkins book the God Delusion, and I am in full agreement. I further found Dan Barker’s Book to be an excellent resource. It nicely organizes the pertinent scripture passages into the 19+ categories for easy reference. I decided to buy the hard cover versions of each in addition to my kindle versions so that I can mark them up more thoroughly. Thank you Dan and Richard for your good work.
