I've only got a few years in His service and this book made me realize that I was only putting on the full armor of God when facing trials. That was OK but Not what God purposed. It's a daily battle, just as it's a daily walk, and most days I was ill suited for the spiritual fight. Good add to my library but not collecting dust. I'm reading it again so that I'm fully equipped for each day.

This book has helped me so much to understand the spiritual world and how much of the time demons are to blame for all sorts of negativity in this life and the war they wage within our souls. Teaches us the keys to being overcomers in this life. Of any book I've ever read this has been the most helpful by far. If you are struggling in any area or many areas with this life please, please read this book.

Tony Evans takes a few Sunday School bible verses and really bring depth of meaning to them and gives the reader a much better understanding of why we need to put on the armor of God, and what each piece really means to us, and MOST IMPORTANTLY.... HOW to wear them.

In my opinion, this is a MUST READ for all Christians. It quite literally changed the way I view the world. Pastor Evans unpacks Scripture to remind us that we have all been given spiritual armor to stand firm in our faith when "all hell breaks loose" in our lives. Pastor Evans truly has a gift for making the complex easy to understand. I especially love the analogies he provides (chess match, body builder, artist competition, gymnast, going to the doctor, covered wagons, and many more).I have shared this with SO many people (family, friends and small group) and all are equally impacted.The book is great (I have paperback and Kindle version), but I would also encourage you to buy the audio tapes. His passion and excitement are incredible, and the audio tapes go into even more detail/examples than the book (can be found on Tony Evan's Urban Alternative site).

I didn’t realize when I purchased it that I had listened to the sermons online and for just a moment was disappointed that it wasn’t new material. I was so wrong!This book is a wealth of information and has tools for putting what you learn into practice.I’m now trying to start a group study either at church or with a friend. The knowledge of true spiritual warfare is critical in the life of a believer. This book will get you off to a great start!

You can't go wrong with Tony Evans. I would recommend anything this godly man writes. He has his theology correct and this is a great resource for all Christians.

Our ladies Bible study is doing this book for our weekly meetings. Such a good reminder to put-on your armor because we do live in a world of spiritual warfare. Tony Evans is down to earth in his writing, using personal and everyday examples. Our group loves it and hopefully it is a reminder always to us to be on our guard and aware.

This book has been so powerful in my life. One of the best Christian books, if not the best, I have read.

In 1492, Jews of Spain were give a choice: leave, die, or convert. Many died at the stake or under torture. My ancestors fled to the Netherlands, then England and remained overt Jews from Spain, Sephardim. Some who stayed in Spain converted under duress. A few of these converted Jews took enormous risks to remember their heritage: the Anusim, the forced ones.My friend, Diane, whose family has been Catholic for generations, like Carvajals, told me about "The Forgetting River." In her family, too, there have been hints and clues of a hidden heritage, of the often life-or-death struggle to both conceal and keep a Jewish identity.Thus, I began reading "The Forgetting River" for my friend's sake, yet within the first few pages, kept reading for the book's own qualities. The center around which the stories turn is the Spanish town of Arcos de la Frontera, one of the white villages on the steep hill slopes. It lies above the Guadalete, named from one of the four rivers in Hades---Lethe, the river from which souls returning to the upper world drink, to forget their past lives.The author and her family have moved from France because her possible Anusim ancestors may have left from the nearby port of Cadiz in the time of the Spanish conquest of central and south America. By living and studying in Arcos (among other places whose archives she searched), she wanted to understand their past and present lives.Her story shuttles across 500 years: the family betrayed to the Inquisition and burned at the stake in Mexico, the courageous grandmother whose dying rejection of rituals may have continued a long-hidden other life, her Aunt Luz, the candle of memory across generations, the tenderly limned people of Arcos and the streets, buildings, caves, and tunnels through which the very walls remember.The struggle continues for the author as for others whose ancestors chose to convert rather than die or flee in 1492. "Who am I?" can be informed by genetic testing but is mostly a mosaic of clues from family memories and traditions. My friend seeks Israeli citizenship as a converted Jew and convinced Anusim; in "The Forgetting River", the author takes herself to that border of remembering.As a story, the book is a page-turner. It is always well written as one would expect from an accomplished journalist and author. It is, however, at times thinly written, and perhaps would have benefitted from including more voices than her own. None-the-less, highly recommended for what it is and for all who are drawn to history, in part for Santana's "Those who forget the past, are doomed to repeat it." One estimate has about 20% of Spain--still that most Catholic country--are of Jewish blood.

I'm really into genealogy and thought this would be a bio of the work this person went thru to find their roots and the history of the Spanish Jews and Inquisition. Well there was some of that, but a lot of it was introspection and retrospection. And I'm just not a fan of that. I used to think it was a crime to skip thru books to the end, but as I have gotten older I have come to believe life is too short to stick with a book I don't like...so I skipped to the end to find out if it all got resolved, but I won't tell!

I bought this to bring myself up to date on world events so I when I hear someone say the Qur'an says .... I might be able to know. It comes with both Arabic and English text with full full notes by a Muslim cleric. However, the text is tiny so you will need a magnifier to read it. I got the Carson LED Lighted Magnifold 2x Power Rectangular Magnifier and found it works well and is comfortable to use. The book itself is good quality. I am American and not a Muslim, so I can't comment on whether it is a good translation or not, but it is supposed to be one of the best.I think this should be a must read for non-Muslims to educate themselves on something that is so important in today's world. Some readers have criticized it because it is not their christian bible and revile it for it's content! But, it is a Holy Book of another faith and should be read as such for the educational value. It's not trying to convert you. Knowledge is always good and is not to be feared.

A beautifully written translation. If you're curious about Islam and want to read for yourself the holy book of the Muslims, this is the book for you. The language is clear and easy to read. There are literally tons of books which promise a "guide to Islam" in one form or another but why not just go to the actual source? The Quran isn't actually that long. It's not like the Bible. It's much shorter but it's separated out into chapters and verses just like the Bible. This edition includes notations which aid in understanding but. This is an excellent English translation, highly recommended.

Alhamdulillah! It was not my initial choice, because I wanted Arabic and English text, along with commentary and comprehensive text. However, it ended up being exactly what I needed. I searched high and low to find a replica of my first Holy Quran, which includes English and Arabic text with translation, commentary, and newly complied comprehensive index, (11th edition with hard cover) purchased for me by my husband about 15 years ago. It was important for me that it was by the same publisher, Amana publications collaborated with Abdullah Yusuf Ali. To say it was a blessing to get this one would be an understatement. I hoped to purchase a Holy Quran exactly like mine for our teenage son. However, this 10th edition of the Holy Quran is the same as mine, it only lacks the Arabic text; but that's okay since my son has a Holy Quran Arabic text. This way when we read together as a family, our commentary and comprehensive text matches, word for word. It's like reading the Holy Quran and reading notes of a Kutba to further explain. It's awesome. I love it and I'm very grateful. Alhamdulillah! It arrived on time without incident.

I don't know what people will think but overall I think that this translation and its notes is too complicated for me to read for long so I read parts and ended up putting the book aside and went back to reading a bible. Maybe one has to be enthusiastic about Islam to read it all the way through ... I do not know.

Yes it’s pocket sized so yes the words will be small. Perhaps you can place a magnifying glass over it when reading if you can’t see the print. And just like a bible the pages are thin. Don’t understand why people think the print will be huge on such a small book.

Islam such an amazing Religion, when you take away all the media hype, and ignorance, and read what the Qur'an says, it not so different from the Bible filled with Wars, pushing the Faith, most religions are guilty of this back in the days.The Qur'an is an easy ready, fonts could of been just a little bigger for people with eye issues. I purchased it, no regrets, I'm enjoying the read, the History of my own faith. Get one you won't regret it. I believe, if I'm right this is the best translation by Abdullah Yusuf Al, and it is!

This translation also contains historical commentary to make it easier to understand the history and context of much of what is written, and helps to eliminate many common misunderstandings and misconceptions. A common misconception of Islam in the west is that it teaches hatred and religious intolerance. In truth this is not the case in real Islam. The portions that would seem at first glance to deliver such a message are shown clearly through the commentary not to be doing so, but rather is more of a historical commentary in much the same way as the wars in the Old Testement of the Bible are described. All in all an excellent translation for a native English speaker wishing to understand the core concepts of true Islam, and to also eliminate the common misconceptions surrounding it. Beyond this excellent commentary, the translation itself is very good, if perhaps using a vocabulary a bit more in line with more educated readers. All in all an excellent translation, and a must read for anyone interested in Islam. If you are only going to buy one translation of the Quran - make it this one.

As a new phonograph collector I found this book to be indespensable as a reference guide for all Edison phonograph products. Loaded with photographs and details, it is a visual and narrative guide to the machines, cylinders, horns and reproducers. Frow provides the history of the machines in an informative and easy-to read way. This book is also loaded with interesting facts about the sales approaches used to sell Edison products during the early days! Great read and reference guide! There is a detailed history, year by year, model by model, and even accessories are included. It is truly the best book on the subject. Once in a while, an author comes along who seems able to spin language into gold. Ms. Link has few peers in contemporary literature, with Karen Russell (Swamplandia, Vampires in the Lemon Grove) as a rare equal. Her writing is clean, transparent and matter of fact, with stories that are casual disturbances of conventional reality. Nothing unusual to see here folks. Each story is very much like the peculiar wind-up toys described in The Summer People. Jeweled miniatures with unexpected and unsettling contents.

One thing I like about short stories is the authors can create worlds that are different from ours in subtle or outrageous ways, and they don't have to explain or justify it - that responsibility of understanding falls on the reader. In long form the author must give the details on these differences but in short form there is no opportunity so the reader has to fill in the blanks. Kelly Link creates delicious worlds in her short stories that are not difficult for the read to accept, but do require the reader to really engage in the story to think about this world and how it could exist, and once the reader accepts that world she provides just enough detail on the environment to let the reader create the background while she focuses on the character and the plot. Great collection.

Incredibly weird in the best way possible. Started me down a path of reading as much weird/magical stuff as I could get my hands on, after years of sticking to mostly straight realistic literary stuff.

Author is adept at maintaining a sense of surrealism and suspense. Her characters tend to move forward, not in a straight line beginning to end fashion but in curious and entertaining fits and starts....Rather than being offered and accepting a passive role in reading a "he said she said narrative", with first or third person narrator in control, in these stories, I felt I was granted access to the inner thoughts and feelings of the story teller, not as they were remembered, but as they sprang to life in that character's mind.

I really enjoyed these stories for the most part-- there was only one or two that I had to slog through. The overall tone of the book is a little depressing/ dark in my opinion, which I didn't mind but some might. I took this one on vacation and do not regret it but this is not an easy breezy sunny funny read. I plan to read some of the stories again for sure, several of them left me wanting more.

Gritty, sparse writing. Sometimes Kelly's writing style gets in the way of the story. Some stories end abruptly--off a cliff with no where to go, and the reader is left wondering what just happened. This was a book club selection, so I hung in there and read it.

Stories linked by trouble- what fun! These stories and writing were surprising and wonderful. I loved not knowing what was next. Though it was irritating to have to reset with every story, the effort was worth it, even when I didn't want the story to end.

Darkish "modern fairytales" you might call them, mostly well written with some risky writing style experiments thrown in. Characters are interesting and dialogue is solid and realistic. Worth the price. Enjoyable read.
