Good read to understand two of the most brilliant - and often under appreciated - philosophers of science.

The tone throughout both Lakatos' lectures on scientific method and the correspondence is delightfully opinionated and full of contempt. Some examples will convey the flavour.Lakatos on intellectuals. "I happened to say that the Philosophical Section of the British Academy is a bunch of idiots ... and the British Academy itself, of which [Kneale] is vice-president, is a bunch of phonies, and also that I shall consider it an honour if I can die without having been elected as their Fellow. It was only then that I discovered that poor Bill Kneale regards it as the acme of his career to have become vice-president of the British Academy and I kicked him where it hurt most. After this clash, it occurred to me that Lionel Robbins was an actual president of the British Academy so I thought I should do an experiment and I went to him and told him that the British Academy consists almost exclusively of common fools. Somewhat to my surprise he said that he had lately come to suspect as much." (pp. 288-289; cf. also p. 92)Feyerabend on modern physicists. "The younger generation of physicists ... may be very bright ... but they are uncivilised savages, they lack in philosophical depth" (p. 385) "Good payment, good relations with the boss and colleagues ... are the chief aims of these human ants who excel in the solution of tiny problems but who cannot make sense of anything transcending their domain of competence." (p. 114)One of many Popper jokes. "My main problem is now a crack which has developed on the wall of the downstairs loo. ... I am now trying to get a big blow up picture of Sir Karl and put it there in a Victorian gilded frame." (Lakatos, p. 270)Lakatos on editors. "'Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge' was completely rewritten by a young woman at CUP ... I think that the woman who did it even mumbled something about making the style uniform ... [When] I found out that the book had been edited ... I ordered them to return the ms immediately and I solemnly burned the edited copy ... and told them to print the originals as I had sent it to them ... I also demanded her immediate dismissal" (p. 295-296)

This book looked very promising. After all, anyone whose read either Feyerabend or Lakatos knows that they had geared up to write, "For and Against Method" cut short by Lakatos's death. We've read "Against Method", just never the "For..". This book was to be our chance!Why 'was'? Well, the correspondence that takes up most of this book is funny, personal, warm and caring. If you're looking for clarification of the thinkers, look elsewhere. Each letter will start "Dearest Imre/Paul, I just got your last article and am going to send you one of mine. Let's get together in Boston next week. By the way, I've something nasty to say about Popper/Kuhn/Searle. Take care, Imre/Paul." Not very insightful. To be sure, these letters ARE EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING and insightful into each thinker's personality. For instance, from reading this, it is easy to see that a large reason Feyarabend was a scientific 'anarchist' is because he loved to disagree with everyone and taking sides meant he had to agree with someone, thus spoil his devilish fun. In Lakatos, I see someone who wished he could be Feyerabend but could never shake that bugbear called common sense. As I said - insightful into each personality, not each philosophy.There were, however, other parts of the book. The most educational was the opening dialogue (actually written by Matteo Matterlinski) where Feyerabend and Lakatos lay out their views and criticize the other's. Next, we have the Lakatos lectures which spend 7/8ths of the time reviewing other people's views and only then explaining his own (very badly, I may add). The two appendices were interesting. Lakatos and Feyerabend wrote on their views towards academic freedom. As one may expect, Lakatos is the more conservative here.Still, I must give three stars as the correspondence was a treat to read. It will have you laughing, shaking your head and oddly enough, coming away with HUGE amounts of respect for both thinkers as their playful intellectual jabs at eachother and willingness to be on the recieving, as well as the giving, end, exemplify how all sciences should conduct themselves.

This book is an excellent introduction to the two great philosophers of the latter half of the twentieth century, Imre Lakatos and Paul Feyerabend. In the enlightening and lucid lectures, Imre Lakatos comes off as the established logician whose views on the philosophy of science is marvelously comprehensible and original, and serves as a springboard for the correspondence. What surprised me was the natural humor and gaiety in the letters, that they promised to annihilate one another in the joint efforts at a book, and yet they could not stop talking about the women in their lives. In a way, the book is also an autobiography, a profile of the two proud and brilliant men and serves as an inside peek at their relationship. Kudos to the editors of this book. I recommend reading this book in order to get your feet wet before tackling on Lakatos' other books and Feyerabend's Against Method.

A very thoughtfully edited book by MM. The highlights are the correspondence between F & L and L's lectures on scientific method. If you enjoyed F's "Killing time" you will enjoy this book. In the correspondence, L & F discuss everything from work difficulties, depression, academia, Popper, to love affairs with their graduate students. A great memoir of two great philosophers of science.

The book gives a good insight into Lakatos and Feyerabend views and ideas connected with the development and methodology of science, as well as illustrates the personalities of these two philosophers. The "Lakatos' Lectures on Scientific Method", mainly due to informal and illustrative language, is an easy to follow and understand piece of philisophic text.

A description and analysis of Islamist ideas that emerged in protest of the Saud Government, “Awakening Islam” provides a very useful resource in understanding the religion and politics of Saudi Arabia. Focusing on the ideas “Sahwa” movement, composed of the ulema and academics of the Saudi Kingdom, it will probably be of much more use to advanced academics already familiar with the currents of radical Islam than to the introductory student. For me it shed some important light, but I would only recommend it for those who already had some background and familiarity with the religion and politics of the Saudi Kingdom.

Awakening Islam is perhaps the best book written about the Islamic revival of Saudi Arabia in the middle of the 20th century. I read the Arabic translation of this work. The author, Stephane, spent 6 years of his life researching this historical black hole. The book is extremely detailed, with extended biographies of many people from different social spaces, lots of dates, names, locations, and political and social theories. Stephane used a variety of sources, including, books, magazines, letters, official statements and statistics. However, due to the academic dishonesty of many pens during that time, and the rarity of the material, he heavily relied on personal interviews, which some might validly argue that it makes this book less reliable.Although enjoyable, this is a not an easy read, especially if you are not familiar with Arabic names. Lots of the names mentioned in the book might confuse those who don't speak Arabic, and the historical facts about that time will shock many. The book is also not written in chronological order. It jumps back of forth in time because it is driven by the social groups and subgroups of that period rather than the historical narrative of the country. However, it only does that in a limited sense so that it never jumps too far ahead and leave the reader wondering what happened between the two points in time.Like many other academic books, this could have used better editing: the author tend to go into tangent topics in the middle of paragraphs. This breaks the flow of the book. This happens a lot when a new name is introduced. The author crams in a biography of that mentioned writer or clergy in the middle of a paragraph that describes a related idea. However, this simply might only be a problem of the translation I read.What distinguishes this book is the author's academic ingerity: Stephane rarely does comment on the behaviors and ideas of the people of that period, no matter how absurd they seem. He paints a picture of what was taking place and let you--the reader-- judge it. This is why we know so little about this period of Saudi history despite how modern it is: many Arab and Islamic writers are immersed in their ideologies that they are willing to sacrifice their academic integrity in order to defend the ideologies.Despite its academic style and dense subject matter, this is a highly recommended journey into the history of the Islamic awakening in Saudi Arabia; an awakening that we Saudis still feel its effects today.

This book is an extremely detailed analysis of Islamic Social Development, in Saudi Arabia, from 1950 until 1980.It illustrates the weakness of leaders using moral concepts for political purposes.

Penetrating look at the political dynamics of Saudi Arabia, one of the most opaque of Muslim countries. The effort the author had to put is tremendous which gave a unique insight into a closed culture and its potent brand of Islam. 5 Stars.

The content is good, but the book was heavily marked up. It was not as listed "very good."

We have several of these maps and love them! They are small enough to fit in glove box, sturdy enough not to get damaged if wet or anything and detailed enough that it makes finds things quick and easy!

Excellent map series. Easy to find streets, great surface wipes clean and probably good with washable markers, waterproof and folds up nicely everytime. I would definitely buy again.

This is a quality book about fashion illustration,but some glaring omissions like Tony Viramontesare hard to overlook.

I did a whole theme of fashion books and this just added to it just lovely

Love this book. I saw it in the store and then found it cheaper via Amazon of course. Anyhow, this is a fairly sizable book, meaning it's got quite a few pages. It is also wonderfully illustrated with tons of examples of how fashion has changed over the years. This is a wonderful read for anyone who follows fashion as it gives you a great sense of how we got to where we are in today's more modern trends. The text is even entertaining for me, which says a lot for myself ;-)

Roxane Gay writes with a rawness that makes visceral the experience of many women - that their bodies are a battleground, sometimes acutely, but often on a day-to-dy basis as well. . Gay's female characters all have the same conflicted...I can't quite call it an attitude as it isn't a matter of thinking...relationship to sex - they are sexual beings, but feel a lot of shame about sex, yet rather than avoid it, they seek pounding, punishing, often demeaning sex. All this complicated by the intersectionality of gender and race. It's not an easy book, I'm afraid it may be put aside too soon by many b/c it's possible to dismiss the women as f___ed up. But these are women we should listen to, sit with, allow ourselves to get beyond the prickly exterior and experience the wildly beating hearst inside.

If you look at the other reviews of this book, you'll see that there are quite a few negative ones. Those people, I think, based on their reviews, hoped for more from this book because they seem to think that books and stories need happy endings.The stories within this book don't generally have happy endings. Most of them don't have endings or even beginnings. A lot of them, Gay plops us into the middle of these women's lives with little to no explanation. You have to catch up. And that's ok. These seem to be to me more of short stories. They are peeks into the lives of many different women. Their lives are hard, often sad. I think it's a bit deeper than most actual situations or women actually read into their own lives, but they are generally very realistic situations. This book is full of tales of heart ache, sadness, emptiness, anger, love... The list goes on. Admittedly, some stories are a little harder to get through than others, but all in all, I'm very happy with my purchase, and I think others will be, too. Definitely a good pick to help me get back into reading the way I used to.

Roxane spoke to my very core in this compilation. Something so true and ardent in her writing cannot be ignored. Never a wasted word-- Superb writing!

This collection of short stories spans a wide-ranging group of women in extreme circumstances. Magical realism, dystopic futures and going AWOL from relationships color the stories, some of which are reminiscent of Joyce Carol Oates in their darkness and perception.

My favorite story would have to be Break Me All the Way Down; I also enjoyed the one with the red machine dismantling the sun; and also the couple where the wife laughed at the husband stepping out on the marriage. I'm a sucker for a love story found in dark places :/. All of these stories were captivating and intriguing. Some short, some long--they all make me want to read more short stories from Roxane. I recommend this book for anyone interested.

I read Hunger before any of Dr. Roxane Gay’s other works. Knowing more about her life makes her stories more personal to me, as she writes her own trauma and life into these difficult women. Difficult Women is a hard read. At times I had to excuse myself to the restroom to make sure I did not vomit. But between the lines there is great humor and irony to be found in the world. One of the best books I've read in a while. Roxane Gay has a powerful command of the short story and a profound way of transporting the reader into the pain and perspective of the characters. This book transformed me and shook my self-conscious nature off its foundation. I am not afraid to be seen as a difficult woman if that means I speak and walk out my truth.

Incredible, incredible collection of short-stories. Some of them left me heartbroken, some of them breathless, some of them grim, some of them happy. All of them were amazing.

About the Author

Barbara Gaskell Denvil was born in Gloucestershire, England but after living in half a dozen different European countries and cruising the Mediterranean for some years, has now temporarily moved to rural Australia. When younger she worked in many literary capacities and published numerous short stories and articles, but now writes full length novels. Her passion for late English medieval history and this forms the background for her historical fiction. She has published three hictorical novels - SATIN CINNABAR which is a crime adventure actually commencing on the Bosworth battlefield, SUMERFORD'S AUTUMN which is an adventure mystery with strong romantic overtones, set in the early years of the Tudor reign, and BLESSOP'S WIFE (published in Australia as THE KING'S SHADOW) which is a crime/romance set in England during 1482-3 during the turbulant years around the death of King Edward IV. Barbara is also an author of fantasy and will shortly be publishing two of these - descriptions to come soon. Both fantasy and historical fiction take us into new worlds and Barbara's books do exactly this - being multi-layered, and rich in atmosphere and depth of characterisation.

A very engaging book, the punch line at the end was a surprise!!

Do you enjoy a good read that will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to guess the sub plots? Well this is one of those great reads. Each time I thought I knew who was the 'bad egg' in the 'dysfunctional family basket' the author would throw in more red herrings and suspicions to have me totally re- guessing. Set in 15th century England amid political unrest, family jealousy and tragedy the cast is varied and all have secrets and deep personal mistrusts, hatred and opinions. Some are also very nievè, innocent and sheltered from the real world while others are the ones that most families have somewhere and spend so much time trying to avoid!! Marriages are negotiated for status, material gains but not for love.Young Emeline ( Emma) is told she will be marrying Nicholas, second son of a drunken Earl who is still mourning the loss of his eldest son. Watching the relationship between Emma and Nicholas tentatively unfold and then as tragedy and circumstances forces the need to develop trust is beautifully written and captured by the author. Rich in history and everyday life in medieval England gives an added layer and emotional attachment with this story. The thought that repeatedly came to mind for me was how lucky we are to have the freedom to just throw on a t- shirt and shorts ...certainly saves time for other things although great here in tropical Australia but probably not for an English winter or rainy day.This was a stand-alone book with a HEA and an ending that revealed the secrets of 'who done it'...well done to the author although when revealed it did make sense. I voluntarily received and read an ARC of this book via Hidden Gems and it really kept my interest until the very last page. An author I will certainly read more of.

My first impressions of Emma, the main female character, were that she was very whiny and clingy. If she had been the sole focus, I would have quit the book early on. Fortunately, the main male character, Nicholas, intrigued me from the get-go--partially because he was escaping a window while wearing a dress the first time we see him! While I found myself rolling my eyes at much of Emma's crybaby theatrics, Nicholas kept me interested in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed his sarcastic wit and self-deprecating humor.I enjoyed the constant whodunit nature of the book. To be honest, I had no idea who our killer was up until it was revealed in the very last chapter. I had my suspicions--and this character was one of my guesses--but I could not have pinpointed it down. Everyone had a reason they could have been the killer, so it was fun to finally see who it was and why.I found the length of the book to be too much for the story. It could have been edited down by probably 100 pages. Another aspect I felt needed some editing was the excess of dashes in the dialogue. I'd be curious to see a Word count of dashes because it was inexhaustible. Sometimes the dashes were used correctly, but a lot of the time, they weren't. Commas or ellipses would have been more appropriate.At any rate, I felt this to be an enjoyable read, but it would be strengthened by an editor.

I read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it so I had high hopes for the second book. Unfortunately, it didn't take long to see that the quality of this book fell way, way short of my expectations.The characters are a major drawback in this story in that....well, they suck. I know; that's not the most helpful or even most mature way to describe anything you don't like but here, I'm afraid, it is apropos. Every single female character, including the heroine, is insipid to the point of lunacy. They all want to have grand adventures and solve murders but only as long as they can do so in nice clothes, with good food, and basically with as little fuss as possible. The only female character that shows any promise is the heroine's mother and she's no queen. Any other time, I might excuse characters like these as products of the historical era being portrayed in the novel as long as the heroine at least seemed adequate. No; these women are high-strung, high-maintenance, and not too bright. Truthfully, since they're all the product of a 21st century female author, they're downright embarrassing. Couple them with gentlemen who are all lacking in the "gentle" department and you have a whole lot of nothing. The male protagonist, Nicholas, shows promise as he seems like a decent human being and has at least two brain cells to rub together. You almost feel bad that he's loaded down with a dunce of a wife. No chemistry at all causes the romance portion of this book to seem contrived and utterly unbelievable.The plot isn't much better with Nicholas doing secret work for the King while leaving his wife and her crew of dingbats to chase a murderer despite showing a laughable inability to function outside of respectability. Forget the fact that Nicholas has been accused of said murders and said dingbats can't seem to do anything without him. I guess it just all works out in the end eventually. Other reviews say the ending has a nice twist. I'm reserving judgment.Bottom line: I'd recommend a hard pass. I love historical fiction and I'm often willing to accept character flaws as part of the experience. In this case, however, there may be too much to overlook. I'm still trying to decide if I have the patience to finish this travesty.
