I bought this for a motorcycle trip to the Black Hills. No GPS on my bike so I got a map for every state I had to pass through. It did it's job and helped me get there and back.One additional comment: Call me old school but I love a good map. My car GPS makes me dumber every time I use it. I find myself blindly following it's directions only to find that I could have saved time and gas by planing the route myself. I also seem to remember the directions better when I plot it out on an "old-fashioned" map.

I needed a map that would serve as a back up if the GPS failed us. As our first road, we don't want to be left stranded and get lost, so we ordered this map. This map comes with great detail and useful tools to determine mileage and time. Highly recommend for any travelers needing a trustworthy map.Only drawback is that the map is huge, so a person might need to make a stop to look through it. The map covers a good portion of the front windshield.

Maps are going the way of the record player, news papers and dial telephones. Stopped in a super sized gas station/truck stop in North Florida ( the gate way for millions of tourists annually) and could not find a map anywhere in the place. The guy at the cash register said they stopped selling them years ago! Everyone uses GPS. The books stores have a few local fold out maps but mostly guide books. Obviously I'm not making the media transition very gracefully. Guess that makes me a technology fossil....I prefer the bigger view and information charts provided by a huge, printed, fold out map to the microscopic, telescoping view on a minuscule screen that more often than not is consistently wrong enough to earn my distrust. Besides, they don't disappear when the signal for my cell phone says "out of area". So, thank you Amazon and Rand McNally for keeping cartography,as I learned it, undated, accurate and available.

I like paper maps - I'm one of those people who goes off on random trips, but well researched. My preferred method of traveling an area is to read a book on it, mark up a map with a highlighter, and set off, sort sticking to the highlighted route, but not necessarily. This is a great map for that, although the split in the front and back sides of the map went right through a part of the state I would have preferred to have on the same side. Ah well, I suppose no one consulted me on the shape of the state, and they had to split the map somewhere.

Maybe I missed it on the description, but this map splits the state in two, with half on one side of the paper and the other half of the state on the flip side of the paper. Not helpful if you're looking for a map of the entire state.

Perhaps I didn't read the fine print of the description closely enough, but...realize that West Texas is on one side of the map and East Texas is on the other. As a result, if you bought two maps and overlapped them to have one for the wall the actual dimensions would be about twice the area. I did buy it to put on the wall but my plan is to use pushpins to track where I've traveled and concentrating on East Texas suits my purpose. I agree it probably would not tolerate a lot of folding and unfolding but it's really big so I'm not sure it would work well for trying to read in the car. And I suppose if you live on the edge of the map, you might be consulting one side, flipping it over as you travel, then back again, etc.

I am a roadmap collector and recently bought the RandMcNally maps for all 50 states, plus a US Interstate map. I like the large scale used and helps considering my vision is less than ideal. I also use these maps to supplement the official maps that I also have for the entire country

Half of California is on one side, the rest on the other, split right across the area we were traveling South of San Francisco. This is an oversized map, and Rand-McNally has a good reputation, so I was expecting the larger size indicated more detail. That is unfortunately not the case and most of the added space is what the computer guys term "white space"; i.e., nothing in it. Moreover, the larger size makes the map more awkward to use in a car, especially when you need to flip between the front and the back. We were tracking missions in the area and ended up relying on an older, smaller, and out of date map we had along from a previous trip. In comparison, our older map had all of California on one side and had more detail.

Has any comic been as acclaimed as Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen? Possibly only Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, but Watchmen remains the critics' favorite. Why? Because Moore is a better writer, and Watchmen a more complex and dark and literate creation than Miller's fantastic, subversive take on the Batman myth. Moore, renowned for many other of the genre's finest creations (Saga of the Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, and From Hell, with Eddie Campbell) first put out Watchmen in 12 issues for DC in 1986-87. It won a comic award at the time (the 1987 Jack Kirby Comics Industry Awards for Best Writer/Artist combination) and has continued to gather praise since. The story concerns a group called the Crimebusters and a plot to kill and discredit them. Moore's characterization is as sophisticated as any novel's. Importantly the costumes do not get in the way of the storytelling; rather they allow Moore to investigate issues of power and control--indeed it was Watchmen, and to a lesser extent Dark Knight, that propelled the comic genre forward, making "adult" comics a reality. The artwork of Gibbons (best known for 2000AD's Rogue Trooper and DC's Green Lantern) is very fine too, echoing Moore's paranoid mood perfectly throughout. Packed with symbolism, some of the overlying themes (arms control, nuclear threat, vigilantes) have dated but the intelligent social and political commentary, the structure of the story itself, its intertextuality (chapters appended with excerpts from other "works" and "studies" on Moore's characters, or with excerpts from another comic book being read by a child within the story), the finepace of the writing and its humanity mean that Watchmen more than stands up--it keeps its crown as the best the genre has yet produced. --Mark Thwaite A Q&A with Dave Gibbons on the Making of Watchmen Question: You were tasked with drawing new illustrations of key shots from the new Watchmen film. Was it a difficult challenge to re-imagine your work in this movie format? Dave Gibbons: I don’t think that I actually did many key shots from the film. I had to actually imagine them rather than exactly recreate what was going to be in the movie. But as far as the drawings I did for the licensing purposes, accuracy was the real key so that they looked exactly like the movie. Whereas doing the graphic novel was creating stuff afresh and being very creative, this was more the case of interpreting something that already existed. So it was rather more a commercial art job than a creative thing. Q: How many scenes from the original graphic novel did you redraw in the new "movie" format? DG: I kind of did them piecemeal, these licensing drawings. I did do a section of storyboarding for Zack Snyder. There is a part of the movie that isn’t in the graphic novel and he wanted to see how I would have drawn it, if it had been in the graphic novel. So I redid the storyboards as three pages of comic on the nine-panel grid, also getting it coloured by John Higgins so it looked authentic. But I think there were probably only 3 or 4 scenes that I drew, which were from the movie. Q: What was your working method for producing these new illustrations from the film? And how has it changed from when you originally illustrated Watchmen? DG: When you’re producing things from existing material, you have to look at and assemble the references... you know, keep looking backwards and forwards to make sure what you’re drawing is accurate to what’s in the photos. I did have lots of photos from the movie and in some cases I had more or less the illustration I was going to do in photo form, which made it a lot easier. On others I had to construct it from various references: really just the usual illustrator’s job of drawing something to reference. And on the original illustrations of Watchmen, I was free to come up with exactly the angles and exactly the costumes and everything that I wanted to. When you’ve designed a costume and drawn it a few times, you actually internalize it and you find you can draw it without having to refer to reference at all. So in some ways it’s more creative and in some ways it’s easier! Q: In Watchmen: The Art of the Film, there are concept designs by other artists of their visions of your iconic characters. What do you think of their versions and did you offer any guidance while they were working on these? DG: It’s always really interesting to see versions of your characters drawn by other artists. You tend to see things in them that you hadn’t noticed before. So I really enjoyed looking at those. I certainly didn’t offer them any guidance. The purpose of getting those kinds of drawings done is to get a fresh perspective on what exists. I noticed actually that they really stuck more closely to my original designs than those, but I really enjoyed seeing them. Q: Watchmen: Portraits is Clay Enos’s stunning black and white collection of photos of each character from the Watchmen movie. What was it like looking through this book at all the characters you had conceived years ago now being brought to life by actors? DG: It’s rather interesting; you know if you look at the Watching the Watchmen book you can see these characters as fairly sketchy rough conceptual versions. Then when you look at Clay’s book you can actually see them right down to counting the number of pores on the skin on the end of their noses! It’s incredible high focus! It’s like zooming in through space and time to look at the surface of some moon of Saturn or something. I thoroughly enjoyed his book... it had a real artistic quality to it that was really so good. And of course to see these actors who so much are the embodiment of what I drew, that it’s a tremendous thrill to see them made flesh! Q: Watchmen: The Film Companion features some stills from the animated version of The Black Freighter. What do you think of the look and design of this animated feature? DG: It looks really interesting! Although I drew my version in the comic book in a kind of horror-comic style, these are very much in a savage manga style. I think they work really well... they’ve got the kind of manic intensity, which I think that work should have and I really can’t wait to see the whole feature. I’ve seen the trailer for it and that looks great and again they’ve used a lot of the compositions that I came up with but just translated them to this kind of very modern drawn animation. Q: How much time did you spend on the set of Watchmen? Was it a surreal experience to see your work recreated like this? DG: I was on the set of Watchmen for a couple of days and it really was surreal to walk through a door and then suddenly be in the presence of all these people in living breathing flesh! I was there for what you would call the Crimebusters meeting where they were all there in costume in the same room, which was incredible. They had obviously planned that so I would get to see everyone. It was surreal though quite a wonderful experience to see it come to life.

Watchmen is, in my opinion, the greatest literary achievement of the greatest comic writer ever. In the mid 1980’s DC Comics reached its absolute artistic peak. From 1984 to 1986 DC handed Swamp Thing over to Alan Moore, released Crisis on Infinite Earths, published Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns and in one final magnificent achievement gave to the world Alan Moore’s Watchmen. I was 15 years old when Watchmen was published and it was an absolutely mind blowing series. This is a REALLY dark story and I mean that in the sense that it can be downright depressing particularly for someone raised on superhero comics.There are currently three different versions of Watchmen books currently available. There is the Absolute Edition which I own but have never actually unwrapped. It’s more of a collectible for me and the giant size of the Absolute Editions make them unwieldy for a little bedtime reading. There is the paperback version which is easily the least expensive and there is the Deluxe Edition. The Deluxe Edition hits the sweet spot. With a hardbound cover it’s more durable, the quality of the paper is much higher than in the paperback and the colors are more vibrant. The Absolute Edition may be the pièce de résistance of Watchmen books but I’d rather curl up with the second best looking book if it means holding 2.2 pounds rather than 5.9. The Deluxe Edition contains 32 pages of extra material not present in the paperback edition including sketches and notes on Watchmen. It’s not super thrilling but it’s nice to have some extras.Watchmen is the greatest usage of the comic medium I have ever seen. Creating a 12 issue mini-series is a difficult task in trying to pace out the story but Alan Moore’s nails it. The story perfectly fits, never drags and never feels rushed. It’s like every panel and every sentence is crucial to the story. Perhaps Alan Moore’s crowning achievement is the creation of Adrian Veidt who is in my opinion the greatest adversary in the history of comics. Comics are rife with hyper intelligent super villains and heroes, the problem is they are written by non-hyper intelligent writers. Adrian Veidt is the first comic character that legitimately seemed to be on an intelligence level beyond the rest. I never felt that way reading Lex Luthor or Doctor Doom or Brainiac. I encourage people to read all the extra material that appear between issues to get an even greater sense of Veidt.Veidt may be the crowning achievement of Alan Moore but it’s hard to argue that the Comedian, Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach aren’t his near equal in amazingness. Some may find one or more of them to be superior to Veidt. Rorschach in particular shows the strength of Moore in that he was capable of creating a compelling and sympathetic character despite having the polar opposite political views. Right leaning writers like Frank Miller and Steve Ditko would never EVER being capable of giving a left leaning hero such honest treatment. Not in a million years. Dr. Manhattan is as close as any writer has come to creating a character who exists beyond space and time. Grant Morrison did a pretty good job with Captain Atom in Multiversity but Dr. Manhattan remains the king.Any comic fan who has never read Watchmen is missing out on the greatest graphic novel ever. This is a book I could read every year for the rest of my life and I have no doubt I would be amazed with each reading. It’s nearly 30 years since its publication and nothing has even approached it. I always search for the next Alan Moore and I never find one. Even the recent works of Moore have moved further and further away from the quality of Watchmen. Maybe we have seen the best there will ever be and maybe this is the most reasonable version given price and portability. If so go buy it. NOW!!!

Describing Watchmen is very hard. The story itself is less important than the themes that story unearths and the backdrop. Watchmen is about morality, it's about politics, it's about humanity, it's about what being a superhero is, it's about comics in general, and it's about power. I don't want to put down the plot, but like art-films, you don't read this for the story. You read it for the elegance through which the themes are developed. It's a slow burn story that packs one hell of a punch in the end, but isn't necessarily something you'll care about for the majority of the book.The big question is whether it's a good place to start in comics. I wouldn't recommend this as the first thing you pick up due to how dark it is, and how you should have some idea of how comics function normally to see how well they're being subverted and twisted here. Of course, since pop culture is stuffed full of superheroes right now it's not something you really need to worry about if it is the first thing you pick up.The biggest problem that would stand if you picked this up for the first time is that it doesn't really introduce you to the wider world of DC comics. Yes, it's a wonderful story, and if you want to add diversity to your shelf and play around in the corners of the comics world, it's wonderful. But if you want to read superhero comics and want an introduction to that world, this is the wrong place to go. I do understand there was a set of prequel comics released at one point, but they aren't written by Alan Moore (and he actually hates that they happened, if I understand it correctly) and didn't last very long. I, personally, have no plans to read them since I'm not really interested in seeing what happened before this book.My opinion of the whole graphic novel: wow it was amazing! It was not what I expected but I loved it all the way through. In no way did I expect it to take me this long to read, and it does disappoint me that it did, but every second really was a pleasure. If it's been something you've debated I recommend picking it up sooner rather than later, even if it's just from your library.TL;DR? It's not the best place to start, but is a wonderful book I recommend everyone read at some point in their lives.

There is very little I can add to the reviews - stellar or otherwise - about Alan Moore's _the Watchmen_ in terms of plot synopsis and cultural impact. When I was a boy, I loved reading comics, but the larger questions (were one to do away with the suspension of belief) are never asked. In the _Watchmen_ Moore raises some really intriguing questions: what is it that makes a person become a "super hero?" "What happens after all the bad guys are defeated? Where do you go - and who are you now?" And most intriguing of all, "what if there were a superhero of supernatural strength, intelligence or power? How would this change international dynamics?"The characters and their origin stories are archetypal - a family tragedy, a scientific accident, a wealthy magnate seeking to do good ... the human side of these super-heroes is what made this such an enjoyable and intriguing read for me: how power and fame warped some, how the government sought to manipulate and use these people, and what happens to them when they inevitably get old?The conclusion was a bit of a let-down - it felt to me as if Moore had written himself into a corner and wasn't sure how to get out of it; that said, the characters remained true to their nature; perhaps given the story arc there was no other way to wrap things up. To his credit, Moore didn't "cheat" readers with a last-minute change of heart of a sudden catharsis that took characters in a different direction in order to provide a happy, tidy ending.For comic book fans, this is a must read. As a cultural touch-stone and commentary on the nature of power and reflection of 20th century western values and mores, its an interesting commentary. For those seeking a fun and entertaining read, this will be a hit.

Nice book with great photographs. Includes lavendar varieties often not covered by other books, which alone may make it worth buying. Do I recommend it? First, I think it's kinda expensive for what it turned out to be. Second, about 1/3 of the book is recipes. If recipes are what you want, fine, but that's not what I was looking for. If you are seriously interested in growing lavender, I'd recommend Virginia McNaugton's "Lavender, The Grower's Guide" before buying "The Lavender Lover's Handbook." The McNaughton book provides more & better information about the botany of lavender and about growing, caring for & propagating lavendar. And if you're really serious, I suggest "The Genus Lavandula" by Tim Upson & Susyn Andrews.

Loved this book. Finally someone has summarized all the major aspects of lavender growing for the average gardener!!!! And it has great photographs!!! .....many lavender books have out-of-focus pictures. I know that the lavender flower is small, but in the 21st century with digital cameras and macro lenses, there is no excuse for out-of-focus pictures. For the first time I now have a clear picture of the difference between hardwood cutting and softwood cutting. It has the basics: how to grow, prune, harvest, how to use for arts and crafts and how to use for culinary purposes. Also has some great lists of lavenders for 1. best color, 2. size, 3 hedges, 4. blooming, 5. scent and 6. location. Then there are pages and pages of beautifully photographed lavender, each with a clear description of color, size, hardiness zone and additional notes about growing that particular lavender.Other lavender books available, especially written by authors from New Zealand or England (ex. Naughton, Lavender: The Grower's Guide) assume that you have a degree in botany. Other publications like the farm and agricultural co-op pamphlets (example, Curtis Beus, Growing and Marketing lavender, EB2005)are targeted to the person with hundreds of acres trying to get into the business of lavender planting. Here, finally, is a comprehensive book about lavender growing for those of us who just want to enrich our lives with this lovely plant or enhance our gardens with the lovely purple of lavender.A missing component to this book is a listing of lavender plants for the desert or high altitude desert. A large group of lavenders do particular well in this climate, and there are lavender festivals in southwest, New Mexico, Colorado. Also a listing for High Country Gardens, a nursery in Santa Fe that specializes in high altitude gardening, [..] is not posted.

We are Onederings Lavender Farm and Ms Bader advised and supplied the majority of our lavender varieties before she discontinued her nursery. This is probably one of the best gardening books I have had and is certainly the best lavender garden/craft book. I do not know how she can sell a book for as little as it is listed with the quantity and quality of pictures, knowledge and it has organized in a very, very useful way. OMG. I have been recommending it to every club I talk to and tell them to run don't walk to order at least one copy of this book. I believe her advice and her plants have single handedly gave us the stock foundation for a lavender farm success. Thank you Sarah Berringer Bader. I am going back to order a few more just in case something happens to the one I have.

My sister and I started growing Lavender as a crop four years ago in order to make and sell Lavender products such as soap and sachets. In order to be able to speak to customers about our products, we needed to educate ourselves. This is one of the best books on the subject. It addresses all the questions that usually come up in a conversation with curious consumers. I am also a Master Gardener Volunteer who provides educational seminars as part of a Speaker Series in our community. When speaking on the subject of Growing Lavender in Ohio, I have is book on my table and recommend it to those who are interested.

My front yard of lavender is ripping as I write this. Sarah wrote a wonderful book.The book addresses choosing varieties, how to properly grow and cultivate lavender, cooking with lavender, and crafting with it.The pictures are beautiful. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in lavender.

After reviewing a half a dozen lavender enthusiast books this one is definitely the most digestible, aesthetically pleasing, and informative for all levels of experience with the "blue gold."

Buy this book for the video.I've bought lots of drawing books over the years. I've given most away to people I don't like. I keep books by Lee Hammond and Carrie Stuart Parks because they do the best job of explaining how to draw, and to learn to draw you really need a good book.The big difference between the two is that Hammond uses a grid to help you figure out proportion and Parks uses a measuring aid. Both methods work well and are complementary.But even the best book is insufficient. You need to SEE HOW THEY ACTUALLY DRAW. And for that you need a video. It's like the difference between reading a book on golf and watching a golf video.And this book has a 24 minute video.

An excellent absolute beginner's book. [Just exactly what I was looking for.] Explains how to shade, shape, and properly proportion every facial feature and then how to put them all together in a well done 'portrait' -- using only a photograph. A must have for every beginner intending to draw faces. Be warned, however, that this book teaches to draw 'lifelike' in an ILLUSTRATIVE genre, as opposed to 'REALISTIC' [or 'REALISM']. An example of the difference would be a Norman Rockwell style drawing [illustrative] and any of the old masters [realistic]. This book teaches illustrative, Norman Rockwell style drawing.So this book not the only beginner's book you should have if 'lifelike' and 'realistic' together is what you really want. You should also have 'Drawing on the right side of the Brain -- Betty Edwards and How to Draw What You See -- Rudy de Reyna.Also, I bought this book used hardcover from 'melisasandy' in Amazon Marketplace and although it was advertised as good condition, it came in very excellent condition. If you are going to buy any books used, this is the third book I bought through 'melisasandy' and all arrived in excellent condition. I recommend you buy your used books from them when you can..

This is a tough review for me. I have watched Lee Hammond on Youtube to get of inspiration and a bit of guidance as I try my hand at learning to draw. There are others I use as well. This book seemed like it would be a good addition to my library. Especially with the added DVD of instruction. And that's where it fell apart. The DVD really adds nothing of value to this book. Instead you get the DVD version of something readily available on Youtube in which Lee shows you how to make a value line from darkest to lightest, and then demonstrates how to draw a sphere using her mechanical pens and her tortillions. All needed knowledge, but that's where it stops. There is no real demonstration of how she puts the "Hammond blending technique" (that's how it's billed) to use in an actual creation of a portrait from a photo. Very disappointed. Get the book if you must, but leave the DVD in its holder. You'll gain nothing from viewing it.

I started drawing portraits of my daughter from photos after losing her to cancer last year. Then I was given the name of this book and author and ordered it. It arrived the day before we were flying to Mexico and I read the whole book on the plane. I found a store in Mexico that sold the needed supplies and the first portrait I did was really good. Everyone liked it and thought I had potential. I have since recommended the book to others. With time I have improved in my drawing and I think this is a great book for those who want to draw very nice portraits. And I say if I can do it, anyone can. Go for it!I have read a super-critical, long-winded review of this book that told me that I will never be a great artist using this book. I say so what! I draw beautiful portraits that are pleasing to my subjects and myself. Since I am 71 years old I don't intend to be the "professional" that the long-winded reviewer pretends to be. People are happy with my portraits and so am I. I am very grateful to Lee Hammond for this book.

I have her original "draw lifelike portraits from photographs" and was very disappointed in this one it contains a lot of duplicate info and instructions as the first one. strictly for beginner. The book shows some pictures and instructions, of ethnic and some new drawings I was hoping that the CD would show more detailed instructions in these but it was her basic instructions. I would suggest the first book for beginners although this book would also be good either one. She does very beautiful work and will be very helpful. Had to return book.

This book is truly wonderful ! I have several art books and this one is by far the best. Lee Hammond does and excellent job of teaching without bogging you down with page after page of yammering. She is to the point and the improvement I've seen in my work as I went through this book is amazing. I personally don't think the reviewer who bashed this book knows what he's talking about. He mentions Betty Edwards book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as an excellent book... I have that book ! I made it 25% of the way through doing the exercises and such and then had to quit because my joy and enthusiasm had been sucked right out of me with all the droning on and on. I want to learn how to draw not get a PhD in Art Psychology. After that experience I left drawing for over a year. When my desire to draw returned I bought this book from Lee Hammond and I've been encouraged ever since. I'm thrilled with the improvement I've made and how much fun Lee makes learning. If that reviewer knows so much I didn't quite catch the names of his books. ?

These stories of the lives of six street children and two families living in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Guatemala are often heart-breakingly sad. I think this must have been a challenging book to research and write, not least because there are many gaps in the information the children were able to give. But what shines through is the resilience and courage these young people show however difficult their circumstances. Children have told the author about past experiences, present difficulties and life style and their optimism for their future.Sometimes members of the children’s own families seem to have acted unkindly. Twelve or thirteen year old Santos - he is not quite sure of his age - from Mozambique confides that ‘my Mum didn’t like me, so she left’. And Elizabeth from Guatemala, now twelve, relates how her mother ‘just left me in the street’. But we should point out to young readers that poverty, family breakdown and illness can cause despair and hopelessness and affect a person’s attitude and behaviour. Some parents show great resourcefulness. Ingrid from Guatemala, a widow whose husband was robbed and murdered, has managed to borrow money to start a business selling tourist trinkets. She has been able to rent a room so that her children do not sleep on the street and they go happily to school for part of each day. The illustrations, and perhaps particularly June Allan’s art work, show Ingrid’s smiling children eager to train as journalists, teachers or office workers. There are, of course, hostels and charitable refuges for children living in poverty on the streets. But, even if family life is imperfect many children would rather be with parents, siblings or other relations however good the centre they are staying at. Miguel working in the streets of Mozambique and attending the Meninos Centre wants to be ‘happy with a family -that’s all’.This book is likely to prove a good starting point for classroom discussion. This is a heartbreaking, but important book. I would recommend this for children ages ten and up, particularly because some of the children interviewed were abandoned by parents. "But my mum didn't like me, so she left," shares one child. Losing a parent is probably a child's greatest fear, and to learn of children who actually were abandoned by their parents is too much for children younger than ten, and even for sensitive older children.Older children and adults should be aware of the millions of children in the world who suffer. Social consciousness helps us be grateful for what we have, and hopefully spurs us to make a difference through prayer, financial giving, etc. This book begs for discussion - I urge you to read and process this book with your children, and find a way, be it ever so small, to make the world a better place for suffering children.
