Very good book on Russian Army of the Crimean War
Well written, well illustrated, well researched. Accurate material in English on this subject is almost impossible to obtain. This book provides a wealth of information on the uniforms, equipment and general organisation of the Russian Army; the Imperial Russian Navy is also included. Yet what makes this book so unique, and so much worth the price, is the information on Russian heroes of the war. This is perhaps the only source in English to offer such information. An important addition to the library of anyone interested in the Imperial Russian Army and Navy, Russian military uniforms (the art work is brilliant), 19th Century military uniforms and equipment. Highly recommended as one of the best books in the Men-at-Arms series.
I read this book together with John Sweetman's short history of the Crimean War which is part of the Essential Histories Series published by Osprey Publishing Company. Although I had previously studied and written for Wikipedia on the Crimean War, this book and John Sweetman's book added a great deal to my knowledge of the details of Russian Army in the Crimean War.
I just saw The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936) and they had Russian Army of the Crimean War 1854-56 in uniforms from 1912. What an insult.This book is a good detail on what they were really wearing.
