This book is far more than a guide to the caves in the Loire Valley. I was expecting to find myself suddenly in a cave with little background and then wondering from cave to cave as the book progressed. The author took a totally different and unique approach for a guide of this type by providing a thorough geological and historical background and other useful commentary that provides the reader with an excellent perspective and grounding prior to delving into the meat of the book. The author has an easy to read and very enjoyable writing style, laced with timely wit and humor, which made it hard to resist finishing the book in one sitting. But definitely resist the urge to rush through the book.You will find that the French have taken caves to a whole new level. Not only do they live in them (troglodytes), but you will also find charming B&B's and hotels, restaurants, mushroom farms, wineries, museums and much more. And when introducing a new cave, a winery for example, the author talks about the wines of that particular area, or when introducing Chateau Caves, he talks about King Henri III or whoever resided there, etc., which I found fascinating.I visited this area of France last spring and really wish I'd had this guide prior to my visit. As I progressed through the book, I found myself repeatedly wanting to return and have dinner at a particular cave restaurant or a unique sounding winery. Each time the author described a particular restaurant's offerings, my mouth began to water.Overall a great book! Download it now - you'll be glad you did, even if you are not planning a trip to France.
You will find yourself inevitably drawn, willingly, into these caves. I've just finished reading "Deep in the Heart of France, A guide to the Loire Valley's Contemporary Caves" a new book by Robert Bonnell, a dear friend who lives in Saumur. It's delightful, it's charming and informative and it's available to download as an e-book. Even if you never thought you'd be interested in caves as homes, hotels, restaurants, museums, churches, farms, Christmas markets...you will after this! I've never slept better than in the Bonnell's semi-troglo house in the cliffs across from the Chateau Saumur.
Great book. Lots of fascinating information, and not just on caves. Thorough, erudite and witty. Wish I'd had this when I was in the Loire Valley.
