Please do NOT get me wrong here. What this man's wife/teacher did was SO SO WRONG. TERRIBLY WRONG. That being said, I don't think I could have liked the author of this book less. He's great and almost perfect you know. Wwll, HE seems to think so. When the book begins, we find out there's big trouble brewing for this man, his wife, and much more. Both the author and his wife are then teachers at the same high school. The author has to go home to find out what his teacher/wife has done, as no one at the school seems to want to tell him. So, this man arrives home and finds this "middle aged woman" (she's 38) crying. Instead of being SOMEWHAT kind to begin with, he screams " WHAT DID YOU DO? " Over and over again! Nice way to open a dialogue. After she confesses to him what she DID, and yes, it's so very wrong, he really let's her have it. No "why did this happen? How could this happen? Do you want to tell me?" Oh no. Mr. Perfect seems to enjoy berating his " middle aged wife". (They're the same age by the way. So what's he? An eternal teenager)? This man NEVER STOPS TELLING US HOW MANY GREAT FRIENDS HE HAS, while making sure the reader knows his wife doesn't HAVE any real friends. That makes him seem braggadocios and petty. Which he IS. Did a terrible thing occur that destroyed his wife's life and marriage and career? Yes. Did this man even TRY to understand what MIGHT have led to her very wrong actions? No. We DO learn that his wife "cared too much about how she looked", making her, in his words, " very vain and not very deep. " Why did he marry her? He never tells us this. He's dedicated to whining about what he and his children went through, and when one of his kids asks why his parents are splitting up, his answer is " because Mommy hurt Daddy and lied". GREAT answerr. Well, not really. So, blah blah blah, his great friends rally around him, while her shallow friends and her mother support her. Her friends can't be worth anything, because they're HER FRIENDS. Oh, obviously the author can't use one of her friend's real name, so he refers to her as "AIM, the woman who loves anagrams", ABOUT A HUNDRED TIMES. We GET it buddy! Her name is Ima, Mia, or Mai.... not too tough to figure out. If also like to point out this man's astonishment when his wife decided to exercise and get into great shape. How dare she? What, did she want attention or something? Because I get the feeling she sure wasn't getting any at home. And HIS SONGS AND POEMS he felt he needed to include in this book. Oh, groan. They are just awful. But the chicks dig him the most! He says so. His wife also had the audacity to ask him if he and the kids wanted to drive slowly in the car along beside her when she was running for exercise. WHAT? I hate to spring the news on him, but people do that... a lot. Let me just... not recommend this book. The woman made a terrible choice; there HAS to be a reason. The author doesn't care. He cares about himself. I feel terrible for those who were damaged by his wife's actions. I really do. However, if you love bragging and raging and whining and terrible poems and songs, here ya go!

This is a "poor me" read that sounds a lot like the high school journals his students might have been writing as he penned his own book for the grownups. He was in a bad situation, sure. But he's hardly the first spouse whose parter was fooling around, which is what this is at its essence. He makes the mistake in the book (and in his life, clearly) of assuming that he was a universal victim and that everyone saw things exactly as he did, which is that the world revolved around him. Anyone who has gone through a divorce understands all too well this typical attitude of "I'm protecting my kids!" and that it's all the other person's fault. But if he really cared about his children, he wouldn't have aired all this for the world to read. They're still in this same school district, after all. His profound lack of perspective that he showed in the book actually got him fired too, after his wife lost her job! If I hadn't had a daughter in the high school when this all went down, I wouldn't have purchased it. I'd hoped to understand what had gone down while she was a student, but now I wish I hadn't wasted the money. There was absolutely nothing insightful about how such a situation could have come about in the first place. The story is really about his wife anyway. He thinks he's collateral damage but in reality, he just made his kids even more damaged than they would have been otherwise.

I don’t know many who have the courage to share a condition that includes humiliation, defeat and the collapse of their family with their friends, never mind write a book about it. On top of that Marchese proceeds to acknowledge his embarrassing personal behavior, a confession of gracelessness in the face of catastrophe. To a fault the book is filled with vitriol toward those who broke him, but each episode hints at self-torture and self-blame while conceding that the writing may be the only way he can heal. For the first time I have gotten a glimpse of what rock bottom really means. I don’t know anyone who cherishes what they have the way they should. Marchese, having lost his dignity and pride, has to learn in the worst way possible, through humiliation, how to cherish what he has left. Because of his story we can be afforded the chance to properly value love and family over narcissism and self-indulgence.

Despite what some may think, Land of July is not a "money-grab" attempt by the author to take advantage of a truly confusing and terrible situation. This is a well-written retelling of a tragic event from the perspective of someone who was there through the best and worst times. Like most memoirs or biographical writing, there is always the possibility of perspective bias from the author and that some facts or stories may not have occurred exactly as depicted. While at times the author seems to rant and point the blame at others, I think Robert does a good job of describing his feelings and anxious thoughts as the story unfolds. This is not to say that he entirely portrays himself as a victim that has no fault in the matter, but as someone who admits his faults, tries to move forward, and explain how he felt as his world fell apart. The author seems very self-aware of his writing and often will point out what others may think about what he is saying. If you are someone that wants to read this book in hopes that you can stir up controversy or more, tiring scandalous thoughts on the events that occurred in this town, you should move on and read something else such as Shakespeare or Hawthorne. If you are someone that wants to know more about these events from the perspective of someone involved so that you may form your own opinion on the matter, I encourage you to pick this up and to not judge a book by its cover.

Only made it half way though book. The wife is not the only self absorbed narcissist in the family
