Roxane Gay writes with a rawness that makes visceral the experience of many women - that their bodies are a battleground, sometimes acutely, but often on a day-to-dy basis as well. . Gay's female characters all have the same conflicted...I can't quite call it an attitude as it isn't a matter of thinking...relationship to sex - they are sexual beings, but feel a lot of shame about sex, yet rather than avoid it, they seek pounding, punishing, often demeaning sex. All this complicated by the intersectionality of gender and race. It's not an easy book, I'm afraid it may be put aside too soon by many b/c it's possible to dismiss the women as f___ed up. But these are women we should listen to, sit with, allow ourselves to get beyond the prickly exterior and experience the wildly beating hearst inside.

If you look at the other reviews of this book, you'll see that there are quite a few negative ones. Those people, I think, based on their reviews, hoped for more from this book because they seem to think that books and stories need happy endings.The stories within this book don't generally have happy endings. Most of them don't have endings or even beginnings. A lot of them, Gay plops us into the middle of these women's lives with little to no explanation. You have to catch up. And that's ok. These seem to be to me more of short stories. They are peeks into the lives of many different women. Their lives are hard, often sad. I think it's a bit deeper than most actual situations or women actually read into their own lives, but they are generally very realistic situations. This book is full of tales of heart ache, sadness, emptiness, anger, love... The list goes on. Admittedly, some stories are a little harder to get through than others, but all in all, I'm very happy with my purchase, and I think others will be, too. Definitely a good pick to help me get back into reading the way I used to.

Roxane spoke to my very core in this compilation. Something so true and ardent in her writing cannot be ignored. Never a wasted word-- Superb writing!

This collection of short stories spans a wide-ranging group of women in extreme circumstances. Magical realism, dystopic futures and going AWOL from relationships color the stories, some of which are reminiscent of Joyce Carol Oates in their darkness and perception.

My favorite story would have to be Break Me All the Way Down; I also enjoyed the one with the red machine dismantling the sun; and also the couple where the wife laughed at the husband stepping out on the marriage. I'm a sucker for a love story found in dark places :/. All of these stories were captivating and intriguing. Some short, some long--they all make me want to read more short stories from Roxane. I recommend this book for anyone interested.

I read Hunger before any of Dr. Roxane Gay’s other works. Knowing more about her life makes her stories more personal to me, as she writes her own trauma and life into these difficult women. Difficult Women is a hard read. At times I had to excuse myself to the restroom to make sure I did not vomit. But between the lines there is great humor and irony to be found in the world. Gay does not deny that there are some good men in the world, but the stories are not really about them, for once. There are no real “nice guys” and no simple women. They are written with the complexity I understand can seem raw in a world where such complex, real women are hard to come by on a page. Not to mention the fact that she touches on race and culture with grace and calculated anger. So much is to be learned from Gay’s works, but it takes work and grit. It will be worth every moment.

One of the best books I've read in a while. Roxane Gay has a powerful command of the short story and a profound way of transporting the reader into the pain and perspective of the characters. This book transformed me and shook my self-conscious nature off its foundation. I am not afraid to be seen as a difficult woman if that means I speak and walk out my truth.

Incredible, incredible collection of short-stories. Some of them left me heartbroken, some of them breathless, some of them grim, some of them happy. All of them were amazing.

About the Author

Barbara Gaskell Denvil was born in Gloucestershire, England but after living in half a dozen different European countries and cruising the Mediterranean for some years, has now temporarily moved to rural Australia. A very engaging book, the punch line at the end was a surprise!!

Do you enjoy a good read that will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to guess the sub plots? Well this is one of those great reads. Each time I thought I knew who was the 'bad egg' in the 'dysfunctional family basket' the author would throw in more red herrings and suspicions to have me totally re- guessing. Set in 15th century England amid political unrest, family jealousy and tragedy the cast is varied and all have secrets and deep personal mistrusts, hatred and opinions. Some are also very nievè, innocent and sheltered from the real world while others are the ones that most families have somewhere and spend so much time trying to avoid!! Marriages are negotiated for status, material gains but not for love.Young Emeline ( Emma) is told she will be marrying Nicholas, second son of a drunken Earl who is still mourning the loss of his eldest son. Watching the relationship between Emma and Nicholas tentatively unfold and then as tragedy and circumstances forces the need to develop trust is beautifully written and captured by the author. Rich in history and everyday life in medieval England gives an added layer and emotional attachment with this story. The thought that repeatedly came to mind for me was how lucky we are to have the freedom to just throw on a t- shirt and shorts ...certainly saves time for other things although great here in tropical Australia but probably not for an English winter or rainy day.This was a stand-alone book with a HEA and an ending that revealed the secrets of 'who done it'...well done to the author although when revealed it did make sense. I voluntarily received and read an ARC of this book via Hidden Gems and it really kept my interest until the very last page. An author I will certainly read more of.

My first impressions of Emma, the main female character, were that she was very whiny and clingy. If she had been the sole focus, I would have quit the book early on. Fortunately, the main male character, Nicholas, intrigued me from the get-go--partially because he was escaping a window while wearing a dress the first time we see him! While I found myself rolling my eyes at much of Emma's crybaby theatrics, Nicholas kept me interested in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed his sarcastic wit and self-deprecating humor.I enjoyed the constant whodunit nature of the book. To be honest, I had no idea who our killer was up until it was revealed in the very last chapter. I had my suspicions--and this character was one of my guesses--but I could not have pinpointed it down. Everyone had a reason they could have been the killer, so it was fun to finally see who it was and why.I found the length of the book to be too much for the story. It could have been edited down by probably 100 pages. Another aspect I felt needed some editing was the excess of dashes in the dialogue. I'd be curious to see a Word count of dashes because it was inexhaustible. Sometimes the dashes were used correctly, but a lot of the time, they weren't. Commas or ellipses would have been more appropriate.At any rate, I felt this to be an enjoyable read, but it would be strengthened by an editor.

I read the first book in this series and really enjoyed it so I had high hopes for the second book. Unfortunately, it didn't take long to see that the quality of this book fell way, way short of my expectations.The characters are a major drawback in this story in that....well, they suck. I know; that's not the most helpful or even most mature way to describe anything you don't like but here, I'm afraid, it is apropos. Every single female character, including the heroine, is insipid to the point of lunacy. They all want to have grand adventures and solve murders but only as long as they can do so in nice clothes, with good food, and basically with as little fuss as possible. The only female character that shows any promise is the heroine's mother and she's no queen. Any other time, I might excuse characters like these as products of the historical era being portrayed in the novel as long as the heroine at least seemed adequate. No; these women are high-strung, high-maintenance, and not too bright. Truthfully, since they're all the product of a 21st century female author, they're downright embarrassing. Couple them with gentlemen who are all lacking in the "gentle" department and you have a whole lot of nothing. The male protagonist, Nicholas, shows promise as he seems like a decent human being and has at least two brain cells to rub together. You almost feel bad that he's loaded down with a dunce of a wife. No chemistry at all causes the romance portion of this book to seem contrived and utterly unbelievable.The plot isn't much better with Nicholas doing secret work for the King while leaving his wife and her crew of dingbats to chase a murderer despite showing a laughable inability to function outside of respectability. Forget the fact that Nicholas has been accused of said murders and said dingbats can't seem to do anything without him. I guess it just all works out in the end eventually. Other reviews say the ending has a nice twist. I'm reserving judgment.Bottom line: I'd recommend a hard pass. I love historical fiction and I'm often willing to accept character flaws as part of the experience. In this case, however, there may be too much to overlook. I'm still trying to decide if I have the patience to finish this travesty.

Without going in to the details of the story, it was the defining moment in her life, when she realized that her ancestors had cleared a path for her and we have that same obligation to our future generations.This most important book is a powerful read, surely a welcome addition to any home, school or public library. This book is not only a highly significant historical and religious contribution to the vast compendium of treatises on Jewish thought, but it is one that must be referred to again and again on a personal level.

Another wonderful book by Esther Jungreis Z'L. Through her books one feels as if she is having a conversation with the reader. Her recent passing is a great loss.

I will admit that I Really disliked this book when I started reading it. The author's style is so self-congratulatory that it bothered me to read it. Her husband was the best husband ever, he was the wisest rabbi ever, and their son once led the most beautiful wedding ever--at least, so writes Rebbetzin Jungreis, who, by her own account, wasn't even at that wedding. Even when I re-read it, she sounded so smug that I could barely stand it.But I read it once at the request of my rabbi and again to let the bigger message sink in. And I do maintain that it is smug--and often theologically simplistic. But the bigger point of the book, how to live a Torah lifestyle and do good in the world, is a good one. Anyone who wants some inspiration in either regard will find this book speaking to the heart. I ended up loving it and considering the Rebbetzin's voice as one of, perhaps, a well-intentioned Yiddishke bubbe.

As with her other books, this is inspiring! Excellent set of principles and ideas from a woman whose life and heritage are devoted to practical loving kindness, backed by ancient and recent historical examples. Gave me new hope for a better life. If only more people would incorporate her wisdom, gained by many generations of amazing individuals who uplifted so many. I am not afraid of commitment any longer -- I run toward it rather than away.

Nice who dun it. Simple but easy quick read. Annoying spacing in the Kindle version making it seem like chapter changes when only breaks in dialog.

I loved this book. The author teaches good solid principles if followed to mold anyone into the type of person God wants us to become. I learned so much, yet I know I'll need to re-read again and again because there is so many levels to this book.

Wonderful book and so well written.Love everything she writes and it is not just for Jews.

With two days to prep with my son and his fiancée, we put together a meaningful and satisfying very small wedding. I officiated. Not exaggerating: I could not have done it without this book. Now that I have done one, I feel well prepared to officiate for just about anyone. The book has many samples of ceremonies, a variety of texts suitable for religious (primarily Christian) couples and others for nonreligious couples, some pop culture quotes, and practical suggestions. We used bits and pieces of all that material plus original texts and some ideas from our families' traditions and came up with something unique that reflected their personalities, values, and interests. Great investment! Four stars is only because I think with more editing the organization of the book could have been tighter and easier to use. But it is easy to use, don't get me wrong!

Whether you are religious, spiritual or indifferent, or whether you are a heterosexual or same-sex couple (which we are) this book is a wonderfully helpful place to start to create your wedding ceremony. We read through the book, (Kindle Version) highlighted the verses/blessings/sayings that we liked, then we took everything that we liked and printed them on to index cards by section of the ceremony and then narrowed it down again to the ones that we really liked and then we edited the verses even further to our own liking and to something that was really fitting for us as a couple. Here is a hot tip: I ended up buying a second version of this book on iBooks because you can email yourself all the highlighted entries though iBooks and then I just copied and pasted all the sections we like into MS Word (or similar) and then printed everything thing on to index cards.

This was one of the books I purchased to help make script writing easier for me as an officiant. It offers step-by-step instructions, practical guidance for a variety of ceremonies (ranging spiritual to secular), and has many wonderful quote suggestions. The couple was able to thumb through this book and pick their favorite of each script component, which simplified the process tremendously, and made it less stressful for everyone involved. I would recommend it, and know I will be returning to for future weddings.

I'm acting as the officiant for a friends wedding and this book is very easy to use for planning purposes. Not only does it help with all the different segments of the ceremony, it provides sample vows, etc. It is helpful both for people planning a religious service or people who are planning a secular service. If you are wanting a very traditional and/or conservative Christian ceremony, this book will still be helpful but more for process than variations on vows. The book skews towards a less traditional outlook, which is fine by me. I just thought I would point this out for those who might be looking for something conservative.

Through all the hub-bub of trying to pull together my wedding, and make it memorable and beautiful, I was really struggling. A friend told me about Dayna Reid and her new Do It Yourself Ceremony book, and WOW, what a difference! The book is so easy to understand and the way she itemizes all the different aspects of the wedding process, I don't know if I would have been able to really pull it off had it now been for this book. IT IS AMAZING!!! I highly recommend this book for brides to be everywhere, whether you are getting married this year, or its not even for a few years... it is great tool to put your own signature and flair on what should be THE most important day of your life!! I am going to be buying a bunch of them as gifts for some of my single friends as well as the ones that are planning to take the plunge soon. AWESOME AWESOME !!! 5 Stars!!!

I conducted a ceremony for the first time last month (June 2015), and this provided to be an invaluable aid. I had initially wanted to write a wedding ceremony from scratch, but it was daunting to create it whole cloth. Not only did this book lay out traditional and non-traditional wedding ceremony formats and actions, but it also provided multiple examples of text and quotes to use for religious, spiritual, and secular ceremonies.So, while I still created a unique and personalized experience for the wedding party, using this for ideas and inspirations relaxed me and allowed my creativity to flow. It destroyed the "power of the white."Whether you are yourself an officiant or are planning a wedding, I can't recommend this more highly.My officiating was a resounding success, by the way.

I've found this to be a great resource for building our non-religious ceremony. Lots of different options to choose from and the book is well organized.I'd suggest sitting down with your fiance and reading through it together. It might seem like a lot, and you might have to break the whole thing into multiple sessions, but I feel like its worth the time. Use a pen, underline the sections you like and come back through later to make the final decisions.

This wonderful little book has everything you need to know about writing a ceremony script that wows...plus more. I highly recommend this book for the new and not so new officiant.

This is a clever idea. Many in my group play multiple instruments and are sometimes searching for the chords. This book is well done with the left side page containing chord diagrams for the various instruments and the right side is a nicely laid out song sheet with lyrics, melody, chord names, etc very well done for a singer and melody player. It is also a nice collection of songs.

I play ukulele. I am interested in learning guitar. This has chord shapes for both, and baratone ukulele. Not owning a baritone, I strung a tenor in baritone style. Now I can practice songs without a major financial commitment.There is a good variety of songs too.

I am having a lot of fun playing these songs to my 4 month old daughter. Great to have tabs for a variety of instruments so I can change it up! Lots of classic Americana in here. Very enjoyable!

Excellent book. A great variety of songs and some of the songs are ones not seen as often in other collections.Chording is given for guitar, banjo, mandolin, uke. So if one is proficient on one instrument, but trying to learn a new string instrument; this book would be great means to improve that new skill.Book has words, chords and melody are on one page with chord fingering on opposite page. A well organized book.

Wonderful collection of folk and folkie favorites. The only logically-organized songbook I have ever seen, where each song (plus chord charts for guitar uke, bariuke, mandolin and banjo) are all on facing pages so you don't have to turn pages while playing.Easy to use and easy to read.

nice book and a very decent price. I like it for the songs and the chord charts for several instruments... well laid out ... AAA+ Hal Leonard does a good job on their materials.

Why do we do what we do, and can we change it? That is what Charles Duhigg asks in The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business. Duhigg, a New York Times business reporter, discusses the habit loop: our brains receive a cue, we follow a routine, and we receive a reward. Advertiser Claude Hopkins mastered this in the first half of the 20th century in his promotion of Pepsodent toothpaste. Cue: film on your teeth. Routine: brush with Pepsodent. Reward: minty fresh feeling in your mouth. Hopkins was able to create the habit of tooth brushing.This same cycle applies to many areas of life. The key to changing habits is to change the routine. You identify and "keep the old cue, and deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine. That's the rule: If you use the same cue, and provide the same reward, you can shift the routine and change the habit. Almost any behavior can be transformed if the cue and reward stay the same." It's so simple, but as anyone who has tried to kick a habit can tell you, it's not so easy.Among his many examples and illustrations, Duhigg discusses the way Hopkins's methods are used in the consumer industry. The food we eat, the products we buy, the music we listen, all of it is being manipulated by businesses who want to change our habits to their benefit. It's startling and humbling to hear these strategies described and realize how much even the most independent-minded among us are influenced by marketing and advertising.From the perspective of business, Duhigg got me thinking about building productive habits at work. We don't naturally have habits in place when we start a new job; we are applying skills or seeking outcomes that may have been previously unfamiliar. So we have new cues and outcomes, and we have to shape the routine to respond to the cues and achieve the desired outcome.Duhigg's thesis is sound and compelling, and his examples clearly show the path to changing habits. At some points in his exposition, as interesting as some of his anecdotes were, he strayed away from the fine point of the first couple of chapters. The chapters that deal with changing habits across an organization are probably the most important, but could use more development. All in all, The Power of Habit is an interesting read that will force to you think about your own routines, and inspire leaders and managers to evaluate the motivations and systems they implement.

Two halves coexist within this book’s covers. One is outstanding; the other is a bit sloppy. Part one is the heart of the book; it explains what habits are about, where they come from, how they’re hard-wired into our brains, and how they can be enormously powerful —both to enslave us and to free us if we only we learn how to handle them well (the book’s mission). I found this part of the book to be truly outstanding: well-researched, engagingly written and extremely persuasive. It combines scientific research, personal life-stories and journalistic interviews to great effect.While the 1st part is circumscribed to the individual level of analysis, on parts 2 and 3 the author takes the analysis from the micro to organizations (meso-level) and societies (macro-level). The author describes “the power of weak ties” of social networks, and claims that it helps understand the rise of social movements —which it clearly does. But in his explanation, networks are rebranded as “the habit of peer pressure”. Networks —as well as peer pressure, or culture— can be powerful forces for change, undoubtedly. But networks are not habits —as per his own definition. Different phenomena are conflated into the concept of habits, and in doing so the concept loses elegance and consistency.Intellectually, the book is revealing. On a personal level, it is incredibly useful —and I’m thankful to the author for writing it. I would have limited the book claims to the phenomena it can explain beyond any reasonable doubt. By taking the concept of habits beyond what it can solidly explain, parts 2 & 3 detract a bit of value and credibility from the book. Were it not for that, I would have given 5 stars to the book. In balance, this is still a great book that --with the caveat expressed-- I strongly recommend.

I really wanted to like this book...But what I wanted more than that were clear and concrete tactics or strategies to "hack" my habits...Strategies and tactics that were groundbreaking, clear, repeatable, and effectively "life changing"...Nope. Not so much.I grade content quality by number of under-linings, margin notes, and folded pages I've set at the end of the read...It scored extremely low in all of those categories. So it's not particular dense with usefulness.A few other things I didn't like...This book is 95% story, or anecdote. I'm not really into stories. I'd read a novel for a story. I read non-fiction to learn something useful- and prefer to do it quickly.The stories themselves are delivered non-sequentially...For example:story A beginningstory B beginningstory C beginningStory D beginningTo understand story A we need to story B. To understand story B we need story C. To understand story C we need story D.Then story A's middle or endingThen story B's middle or endingThen story C's middle or endingThen story D's middle or endingIt might be interesting to write this way, but it's an irritating read. Who wants their thought sequences disparate like this?This distracting structure could have been redeemed if there were meaningful conclusions or anything actionable amidst the mire.But there was not.Overall, is it worth reading? Yes...if you have nothing else very interesting to read.

As someone completely new to Exchange, this book has been a great read and great learning experience for me. Chapter layouts are sensible. Pretty good balance between what you'll need to know for the typical setup, while also mentioning some more exotic setups along the way.

So far so good. Except I would like to know how useful this would be for the MCSE 70-345. I did a search in the material for some port numbers that exchange 2016 uses and not all of the port numbers were covered. I am wandering if I should have just bought the 70-345 material, but I kind of assumed that this was going to be even more in depth hence the "Mastering" title. I truly want the full back-end engineering workflow Microsoft Primary Field Engineer knowledge type material. I still have to read the whole thing though so we'll see.

This is more of an explanation of the product, its features, and its differences from previous versions. I was hoping more for a guidebook for installing and configuring the software, not just for an explanation of what it does.
